Rohde made a rod for his back by stating pick 28 was "off the table" early on in discussions, which has subsequently made it hard for us to extract even that pick. Probably the reason for the latter pick downgrade too - so it's looks like Rohde isn't caving on just pick 28.

Honestly don't hate Ebert, always thought he had something to offer the club and am dissapointed he's left. Although do understand his reasons for leaving and hope him all the best.

More pissed at Port for being such cheapskates. Always knew we were gonna get unders for him, but that downgrade really grinds my gears. Hope to god they score a dud with 45.

Went waaaaaaaaaay OTT in my previous post but as mentioned, was pissed at the time, and now for that matter.

Amen brother, the Eagles supporter in me is pissed, really pissed that they're quiblling over a 40s pick, when Ebert alone is worth more than the 28 they seem to have begrudgingly given up.

However, the pragmatist in me says kudos to Port, because they have a number of gaping holes to fill in their list, and quickly, so a mid 40s pick could be important to them.

But I think I'll stick with my initial feelings, for now. :)

If we do accept 28, Port would have played this perfectly. It wouldnt surprise me if they always wer going to give us 28 in their plans but just played hardball to a) wait and see what else appeared over the week in regards to other trades just in case and b) to put us back far enough that we'd have to struggle and argue down to pick 28 so by the time we're there we're just happy to get what we're given.

The supporter in me wants to be angry but I know that its just a complete waste of energy. This is trade week after all principles and ego count for nothing, there is really no point cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Yep, that's exactly right CG, that's the pragmatist in me saying "well played Port". :):thumbsu:

If there is no Josh Hill surely we keep pick 45.

Yep, that's the bit that has me confused, but maybe they won't give up just 28 for Ebert, they want more.

I wouldn't think so though, we should be getting more than pick 28 for Ebert let alone them getting extras.

I really think it's the Bulldogs though that have screwed us over in the trade, pulling out over a 4 pick difference.

Wow. Don't think anyone needs to explain their thoughts/opinions in great detail to a sack of shit nothing like yourself.

... and thank you for highlighting your likely to age to the rest of us here. I actually thought maybe you could provide your analysis on why these will good pick ups but that was obviously too high-a-level of thought process.

Masten: we know that this has not turned out to be a strong draft and if we chose Morton or Palmer over Masten then we'd really be spitting chips. As it is, Masten has some good games towards to the end of the year and maybe just maybe he has turned a corner. Having said that, would you still prefer Masten over Dangerfield or Rioli? I know hindsight is difficult but predicting the future is somewhat part of a recruiter's skill set. If not, anyone could do the job.

Shep: compared to Lucas and Jetta I was happy with the Sheppard pick up. He is still young and needs a lot of time but at AFL he looked completely out of his depth. Hopefully he can continue to improve and push for a secure spot in the coming seasons. Would you still prefer him over Fyfe though? I was surprised how well Fyfe has played as well, but I am not a professional recruiter (and see above).

Swift: yeah a project player. We took a small gamble and it hasn't paid off as yet.

Yeah sorry for last nights post. As I said, my posts get weird (try to amuse myself) when I'm bored....And I was very bored.

Anyway, I forget what I posted....Something re: Masten, Swift and Sheppard I assume?

I think Mastens two late games against Brisbane and Adelaide showed when free of injury, played in his preferred spot and kept there, he can be a really good player. I never really saw much to get excited about until those two games and the finals. Will continue to add size too.

Sheppard- Nothing wrong with him expect his size and role he plays. Needs to get stronger over the summer and be played/trained to be mid/winger imo. He's not solid/balanced enough to keep his feet when playing on an elusive forward. But he's quick, attacks and runs with ball wherever possible and has good skills......Dale Thomas winger minus the trickery..Hopefully.

Swift- Yeah something isn't right imo. Mentally or physically, something has held him back from becoming the player we expected after seeing his late 09 games v Dogs, Dons, Crows and Tigers. I'm hoping he just comes back refreshed and without fear of screwing things....I Think he may have tried too hard to be perfect with every kick and it all got to him.

Well with Ebert gone I'm hoping Sheppard takes the high HFF role, he's looked ok up forward for short periods and can kick a goal on the run.

He's twice as fast as Ebert and much better foot skills, hopefully follows in Nicoski's footsteps and with the pressure of last line defense taken away he really starts showing his skills further up the ground, no doubt he will add great defensive pressure chasing.

Very much a fan of the "Sheppard to go forward" idea, let him play to his strength ie not as a defender. He will eventually move into the midfield but for now let him get his hands on the ball and put it on a plate for the forwards

Not a fan of this move at all.

Sheppard has classy footskills, good pace and an ability to read the play. Nicoski had none of these (he was a bit pacy back in the day). This is why the Nicoski move paid off. He was simply a liability moving the ball from defense. In the forward line, he almost has no option but to hit the scoreboard and with his raking boot, rarely has trouble putting them through. His defensive efforts are also top quality. Simply playing to his strengths.

Ideally, Sheppard should have the play in front of him. Why restrict his class to the first 50m of our attack. He's the guy that should be transitioning the ball from defensive to offensive 50. His playing as a defender is an attempt to develop the opposite side of his game, since the offensive side comes naturally to him. If we had not, he'd be a liability in the future, due to the press oriented game we've developed.

Is this trade formally done yet? Or at least agreed in principle with other parties?

I still half expect us to offer you #24 for him if there is nothing formally announced by 10am without all the other nonsense.

Ha, we can only hope that a Melbourne like raid can be orchestrated by the Crows. :D:thumbsu: Give those other parties a kick up the backside, like they deserve.

Deal done:

WCE Give: Ebert + 49
Port Give: 28 + 45.

Not too sure why this wasn't done in the first hour of trade week, but there you are.

Other clubs were involved and slowed it down. Port/West Coast been in agreeance for 3 or 4 days now.

New rule for the club. No rangas. Beau is semi strawberry blonde so i reckon that fills the quota and everyone after that if you even look like you might be headed towards the path of becoming a read headed fiend your on the way out.

God damnit, with it all taking so long i had really hoped that brad would stay on a 1 year contract and try and do the right thing by the club. I should have realised him lying to my face and then not turning up for the club champion awards put an end to any chance of that happening though.

We got reamed and while he isnt very popular on this board i think he'll end up vice captain at the least at port later on in his career. Really think he'll end up becoming a player like cameron ling.

Should have dealt with the Hawks instead of the bulldogs considering Freo got pick 29 (same as we got for Ebert and a pick downgrade) for (38 and 56).

Have no idea how it would have worked though.

We get bent over by Port. The least they could have done is offer just 28 and not need the pathetic upgrade that means nothing.
I guess that is it though, we aren't going to use it anyway as our 3rd pick will be a rookie upgrade in Hams.

I think we got bent over too, but the downgrade of late picks really isn't an issue.
