Brendan Fevola's $1.4m battle with Brisbane Lions
  • Mike Sheahan

Fevola was due to receive a further $1.79 million for 2011-12 - $570,000 this year and a whopping $1.22 million next year.

He has received an estimated $250,000 up front this year, leaving the Lions liable for as much as $1.4 million. They are believed to have offered the Fevola camp a $1 million settlement.

Worth a punt

Chapman said he had contacted former teammate Alastair Lynch and Peter Blucher at Fevola's management company, who confirmed that a switch of codes was "on the radar". But he was adamant such a move could only be made if Fevola was mentally fit to commit to a long process of retraining his body and learning the craft.

"He'd need six months off everything, clear his head, get over his issues, and then step into training and train for 12 months. He's just coming out of rehab — it's not like, OK, he just puts on a helmet and pads and he's going to be right to go.

570k this year then 1.22 mil next year, seems we were still doing stupid back ended contracts when Fev came onboard.

As with when Fev was recruited, his salary figures reported vary greatly - not just between papers, but between articles in the same paper. It does not instill a great deal of confidence.

The latest from Caro in the Age:

The expectation is that Fevola will receive his total 2011 contracted salary - about $1.1 million - along with a further six-figure sum for 2012 with the AFL having indicated the club can spread the payout over 2011 and 2012 to avoid a salary cap breach.

and this a couple of days ago:

Under Fevola's generous three-year deal, he is due to earn at least $1 million this season from the Lions, along with $100,000 from Carlton. With the Lions looking to settle with Fevola to the tune of at least $1.2 million and potentially up to $1.5 million - he was contracted in 2012 for about $400,000 - the AFL is believed to have approved spreading Fevola's payout over two seasons.

Those figures are wildly different from Sheahan's very precise-sounding take on it today

The club's steadfast refusal to detail so-called breaches of his $2.24 million contract provides him an obvious platform for a fight for his outstanding money, and it is worth the fight.

Fevola was due to receive a further $1.79 million for 2011-12 - $570,000 this year and a whopping $1.22 million next year.

Whereas Hammo believes he's on $300k less:

Fevola has two years to run on a deal believed to be worth $750,000 a year.

Then you have the "journos" like Hagdorn who round up:

Fevola’s troubles and now sacking with a near-on $2million payout to be absorbed into Brisbane’s salary cap over the next two years...

I do love how so many of them state their own version of the figure with such confidence, without even bothering with the ubiquitous "believed to be about" preamble:

The Lions board unanimously agreed to tear up Fevola's $1.5 million contract at a special meeting on Sunday after a string of misdemeanours.

So once again, just fair warning that many of these "journos" really do pull figures out of their proverbial.

Having said all that, I don't actually have a major issue with back-ending contracts for 2012 because it coincides with Brown moving onto the veteran's list.

I agree that the figures are seemingly all over the place. Although you might be able to take some guesses about some of them.

The Herald-Sun's article today is consistent with a recent article that had info 'from sources close to Fevola'. That article also had the payout figure of $1.9m (which I would assume would include all possible bonuses, match payments, etc...) which would = $2.25m - $250k already paid - $100k from Carlton.

The second figure used is $1.79m - $250k already paid - $100k from Carlton = a payout of $1.4m (which seemingly would include no bonuses, or match payments?).

The Lions have apparently offered around $1m.

Anyway you look at it, the bottom line is that we were paying him an absurd amount of money.

That about sums it up LOTR. He certainly was on way too much money. Shows that not only the decision to get him was bad, but the people running the show accepted those kinds of terms. It's a far cry from what our new and vastly improved administration is all about.

Mick Malthouse

"Do I feel for him? I think you're responsible for yourself, quite frankly," Malthouse said today.

"You make your bed, you've got to lie in it."

Asked whether he thought Fevola's career was over, Malthouse was brief.

"Yes," he simply said.

Ben Graham Says Brendan Fevola Wouldn't Receive Any Payout If He Transgressed In The NFL

“If they do do the digging with Fev, they might see he is a bit of a knucklehead but they really won’t care as long as he can kick a football under game-like conditions on a Sunday,” said Graham who has been punting in the NFL since 2005 after playing 219 AFL matches with Geelong.

“When he comes over he’ll see all that, his talent obviously they’ll look at that first but if he messes up while he’s under their care, well, they’ll just kick him to the curb.”

“His contract would be ripped up, he won’t get a cent out of it, that’s the way it goes.”

Kevin Sheedy

Former Essendon mentor Sheedy, the foundation coach of expansion team Greater Western Sydney, said Fevola would be the last player he would attempt to lure to GWS.Sheedy sent the former Carlton spearhead home in disgrace after a barroom incident in Ireland during Australia's 2006 International rules tour.
"I cleared Brendan Fevola out of the Aust team five years ago," he said.
"To me perhaps he has not learnt enough yet what is expected from top-class AFL players.
"At the moment we've just got our minds set on getting these (young) guys careers off on a good start and having nobody in there maybe taking them down the wrong path."

Brown said while he was disappointed to lose a "match winner and showman" like Fevola, the club had to move forward without the wayward 30-year-old, who is still in rehabilitation for gambling and alcohol issues.

"At the end of the day, blokes are not going to drop off Fev from a friendship point of view. He hasn't been able to retain his place with the Lions and fit in, but that doesn't mean he's a bad person," he said. "I genuinely hope he gets himself right. At the end of the day, the footy club has made the decision and now we've got to get on with business."

Meanwhile, Campbell Brown said Fevola had plenty of support in the AFL community. "He's got a lot of friends in the footy world and everyone really wants him to do well. Personally, he's a great mate of mine and I wish him all the best," Brown said. "He seems like he's in pretty good spirits."

Editorial

The wisdom of securing Fevola's services will continue to be a topic of debate, but the wisdom of sacking him is indisputable. As agonising as it may be for some Brisbane fans who still hanker in 2011 for the quick fix that Fevola promised but failed to deliver last season, the reputation of the club and its long-term future are more important.

Jed Adcock

If anything, Adcock said Fevola's departure was met with relief in the Lions locker room. “It's good that it's over,” the vice-captain said today before heading to Melbourne to play the Western Bulldogs in the NAB Challenge.
“We know one way or the other that an answer has been made and we'll hopefully leave everything behind now. I guess it is a bit of weight off the shoulders.
“After the incident happened a couple of months ago everyone dealt with it then.”

I will play again, says Brendan Fevola as he pockets $1.6m
  • Tony Sheahan and Glenn McFarlane

BRENDAN Fevola and the Brisbane Lions have cut a $1.6 million redundancy deal - and now the forward is eyeing a comeback. The Sunday Herald Sun understands the troubled Coleman medallist has dodged a potentially ugly legal fight and will pocket the sum, which is about $300,000 less than the $1.9 million stipulated in his two-year contract.

"We're still having pretty productive discussions with Velocity (Fevola's management company) and we are very close," Johnson said."I don't want to put a timeframe on it. It could happen this afternoon, it could happen tomorrow, it's fairly imminent.
"I've been given very clear instructions by Steven Wright (interim CEO) who is driving he negotiations for us that we can't comment on what the settlement details are."

The Lions and Fevola's management firm, Velocity Sports, have spent the week discussing a settlement figure, believed to be about $1 million, as he still had two years to run on his deal.

The Lions had been hamstrung by the continuing uncertainty over Brendan Fevola's future and now he has been sacked, how much of the salary cap his payout would take up. But Warren says that issue is likely to be finalised today.

And if reports are correct,at least 2 more itching to sign him for 2011.

Player managers have been known to stretch the truth when it comes to interest in their players. In fact I am yet to hear one say 'there isn't any interest in my client'. Unless these reports come from the clubs directly, I tend not pay them much heed.

Club statement

The Brisbane Lions AFC and Brendan Fevola have today reached agreement on a confidential settlement following his departure from the Club.

The settlement has been welcomed by the AFL and the AFL Player's Association.
