Plenty of opposition fans have had their say. Wells is better now but I don't like comparing young players until they've had at least 3 seasons.

right now, Wells
this time last year, Goddard
this time next year,

Goddard seems to have suffered a little from being in a dominant side. Wells has been eased a little more into it and seems as if he'll have a more gradual progression.

Being a Blues fan i am spewing. However, i suggest the Walker will be better than the two of them put together and if we had got Wells and Goddard we wouldn't have got the priority pick last year, therefore no Walker. This logic is deductively valid, so don't try to debase my theory.

Wells now

and

Wells in the future too, Will be considered as one of the greats after he retires.

Goddard will be considered a very good utility player and a very good kick after he retires.

Another case of summing up careers after less than 2 seasons. Who knows who will keep improving and who won’t? Trent Croad is no better today than when he was absurdly included in the IR side for being tall and fast. Paul Licuria on the other hand has continued to work on his game and improve. The Scott bros were average footballers as teenagers. Martin Pike was a bum. Anyone remember a bloke named Dwyer from Fitzroy – 3 BOG’s in his first 3 games and the next superstar? Frank Marchesani? – best 1st year player, poached by Carlton and an also ran thereafter.

All you can say is what the players possess now and what you think they might improve at. To say Wells will be a champion is just silly. He might but at this point he has to improve a lot. He looks to have some serious assets and if his brain is one of them that we can't yet see then he has every chance of making it big time. Goddard looks to have a bit of class but he has more work to do to be a serious big time player IMO. To me he looks a steadier but less brilliant player. I'd rather have the more brilliant Wells at Collingwood but Goddard has what could very well amount to a great build for a running player with the flexibility to play as a medium/tall forward or back. Don’t read anything into a form slump for a second year player. Nathan Buckley and a few others aside that is par for the course.

You all can have Wells if you like, I'm very happy to have BJ in our side.
No offence to Wells, but BJ is the type of player, in ability and body type who is more likley to stick around for a 10-15 year career.
Crumbing forwards are a dime a dozen right now, and are likley to last just as long.

This is stupid it's to early to compair.

I think Goddard was way better in his first year he had a few 20+ possesion game's and was a very good contributer.

This year he has been disapointing but I am sure he will bounce back.

This should be posted up everytime someone starts a thread comparing one young player with another.

Where are the clean foot skills of Goddard that people rave about? All I see is a Fletcher-like gumby who is unco when he kicks it and unco when he doesn't hit a target.

David Bourke:mad: was hyped up at 19 too.

Wells any day.

I dont think I have seen him ever play in the forward line. :p

He is an onballer who follows the ball forward at times, as you would expect.

Wells has been allowed to develop slowly, he really has only started recently to get full games, well, as full as Laidley allows any on-baller to play. He is still up and down, will be so for a few years, all young players go through the same thing.

Goddard is a great player. This thread is just poorly timed. When your team is struggling to win games then almost everyone looks ordinary. A few months ago when Saints were winning and we were losing this thread would have said Goddard, Wells is a hack. :p

Try the 'Drug ***'d mo'fo board' bro.

Goddard has SO much upside that until he has had 3 full AFL preseasons i wont judge, he is up around the 191cm mark now, is a quality long distance runner who is equally adept on both feat can truley play a midfield role as well as a KPP position at a pinch like Adam McPhee will become one of the games true utility players

On the other hand Wells is Magical and will always thrill crouds...

again wont decide for at least another year.

IMO Goddard will be a top player as he matures. He has size on his size and looks to be very skilled and couregous.

Wells is just one of the naturally gifted footballers and he is giving we Roos supporters a lot of excitement.

Hopefully, they will both be champions of the game for a long time.

Size & athletic ability nice to have but are no guarantee for success in footy (look at Croad).

Haven't seen much of Goddard to make an informed judgement on him. On the other hand, Wellsy is is developing perfectly and more party tricks on display with the extra game time he gets each week.

Very happy with the way Laidley has gradually gromed/used him at this level. I think we've only seen the tip of the ice berg of what this kid will do over the next decade.

May be I am wrong but me thinks the underlying basis of this thread is another attempt to rub Carlton's nose in it.

I really wonder if there would be the same level of speculation about who is the best player is now and potentially in the future if they were Carlton players. I think not.

True it would great to have them both but the reality is that Carlton never really had them in the first place.

Do most of us give Carlton a thought? I think not. They aren't nearly as fascinating as you think.

I saw this thread as the usual enthusiasm each club's spporters have for their exciting young players - and in North's case, we are focused on what use we've made of a very rare high draft pick, and pleased with what we see.
