Brendon Goddard

Interesting, that article. Says he only spoke for 90 seconds, plus they usually announce these things at their AGM, instead they brought it forward. Last ditch effort to get him to sign I think, either that or they know he is gone and wanted to get the life membership out of the way before he announced his destination.

ST KILDA has inducted Brendon Goddard as a life member, placing further pressure on the utility to stay a Saint.

Goddard is one of the highest-profile players eligible for free agency and has already been linked to Essendon and Fremantle.

The 27-year-old became eligible for free agency after spending 10 years at the Saints, but that didn't necessarily make him an automatic inductee.

Earlier this year, Justin Koschitzke was inducted as a life member despite becoming eligible 12 months earlier.

St Kilda has traditionally announced life memberships at its annual general meeting and season launch, but brought forward this year's announcement to Wednesday night's best and fairest count, raising some eyebrows about the timing as the free agency period opens in three weeks.

In accepting the honour, Goddard spoke for less than 90 seconds, and made no mention of his future.

Surely he is leaving St Kilda. Their season has been over for almost two weeks and the only team in the finals that he has been linked to is us. They don't seem to be making any ground and appear to be waiting for something. Whether that actually be the free agency period or us winning the Premiership I'm not sure.

I think we might be outsiders, but Goddard is a 95% chance of playing for someone other than St Kilda next year. Why would he stay when he can get more money elsewhere, on a longer deal, and St Kilda have absolutely zero chance of winning a flag during the rest of his career.

Just heard an interesting snippet from a saints supporter...not sure if mentioned yet.

Goddard is Reiwoldts best man in oct and won't announce until after that. As good a reason as any speculation so far.

"Required" in these instances generally means - we made a mistake with the contract in regards to term length, if anyone would be interested in buying, slip us a figure under the back door and i'll ponder it.

Anyone else read it a little differently the first time?

Saints fans will gobble this up greedily as some sort of conclusive evidence he aint going.
Really, which ones? Pretty much everyone on our board is resigned to the fact he is leaving.

As I said a couple of weeks ago, the club clearly doesn't want to offer him any more money, or a longer contract, based on his last couple of years footy and his age, so they are trying to use emotional means as a last resort. The club wants him to stay, but not so much that they want to pay him more than about $600K a year, at this point, I believe.

Not sure if anyone else has posted this article....Saints' Free agency Splash - http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/147559/default.aspx

The saints are aiming to take part in free agency and there isn't any salary cap pressure apparently according to Scott Watters............because maybe Goddard is gone?

Thoughts?
I think you'll find he means that there isn't any salary cap pressure even if Goddard re-signs. The club have in recent weeks made it very clear that we will be going down the path of Geelong and other teams that refuse to pay anyone more than say $600K, unless they believe they are well and truly worth it and that, after being in the situation we are at the moment, where the likes of Kosi, Clint Jones and Nicholas Winmar are all contracted for next year, when we would possibly like to delist all of them, after being given relatively excessive contract lengths, we are very unwilling to give someone who is 27yo a 4 year contract, at big money.

As I've said previously, I have pretty much no doubt we could pay him what he wants and for as long as he wants, in order for him to stay, but just don't want to. He wants to stay, but not so much that he is willing to take a significantly smaller amount of money to do so and we want him to stay, but not so much that we're prepared to pay him as much as he wants and how long he wants it for, so unless one side or both change their minds, there will be a parting of the ways and both sides will get what they supposedly want.

It's a tough situation for you guys. To keep him you will have to pay him a fair bit more than he is worth. For another club to get him they will have to add even more money to the contract but have the huge benefit of getting a high quality player without losing high draft picks or players. I'm glad we don't have a high profile free agent. But you never know he might stay.

I think Whatley summed it up on Fox Footy with regards to the rules of free agancy. 1 Oct is the key date, Goddard can not present the Saints with his one and only prefered offer from what ever club he chooses. It is from this date the Saints decide whether they can match it. So between now and 1 Oct it's all pure speculation.
