Bizarre part is the way Lake lashed out on Petrie immediately.

Petrie didn't even do anything in the event leading up to it. Lake just tackled him off the ball and then this begun.

Yah I thought that was strange to. Maybe Petrie was doing stuff behind play? Reminded me of when Hall punched Staker (is that who it was?) seemingly out of nowhere. No lead up to it, and bam. I think if Lake gets done thats why.

Look at .08-.09

Lake picks him up and throws him down.

Who wouldn't be p'd off.

Dog act? Nah, dogs are usually pretty loyal

Second time I've seen him do something stupid - could have got more than 3 weeks in the GF had he made more contact with Walters. Should get weeks

Highlights the need for a sin bin or red/yellow card system. If a player does something stupid should get sent off - even if it's just for 10-15 minutes/remainder of the quarters. Gets them calmed down at the very least and protects them from counter-sniping etc.

Eye gouge lol. Petrie only has to say it was self defence as Lake carried on from a tackle and went way to far. Besides he put his hand over his face not into his eyes like Judd did.
Go and check the vid of Farmer brushing his fingers across Pratt's face, resulting in a 6 week holiday for "eye gouging", and then tell me Petrie's wasn't a similar action.

Nah, keep them on, he helped us over the next 5 minutes.

Petrie knew he had his hand on his face.

He knew the potential for eye gouge accusation.

He stopped and moves hands away from Lake's face.

Lake keeps going with the neck choke or whatever you call it.

Lake will get two weeks suspension.

Lake can go to the Snow next Saturday because he cant play because he is suspended.

In fact he could go the weekend after.

How's that for you?
Hrrm still a poorly structured sentence

Show of strength where lake got carried away.

All this "extremely dangerous" hysteria drives me nuts. If Petrie misses a few weeks because of a throat injury then sure, go crazy.

Fact is he was up and about and running around kicking goals immediately after.

Also with the eye gouging hysteria, it was a bit of scratching across the face. Yes it drew blood but so does sliding across the ground on a dry track.

The biggest damage here was to hawthorns team morale. Seeing a guy lose his cool shook us up and we took our eye off the ball. We've got to be better than that.

As for suspension - if a guy gets 2-3 weeks for dishing out an injury so bad that his opponent plays out the rest of the game unimpeded then I think we're overstating the danger of an act.

Of course we could go down the track of suspending people on the 'potential' of their actions. Hopefully this happens and we see 4-5 attempted striking charges each week. Would be great, wouldn't it?

No sorry LP!
It's not so much what he did, but for how long he was prepared to persist with it.

Down right dangerous from Lake.
I listened to Lewis talk about it this morning & I thought he was very classy in distancing the club from that sort of behavior.
I was at the game last night.
That act won North the game.

Putting more power into the hands of the umpires is a big no. Its up to the coach to get players off for that if they think they need to be calmed down; Clarkson did move Lake forward for a bit which was the intention.

It's probably more about Petrie's usual dominance of him

You're jumping right into the hysteria there Ted.

That act didn't win north the game: their superior work ethic across 120 minutes won them the game.

The lake incident didn't help, it have north a lot of confidence but they had already been playing better than us for 2.5 quarters.

Like you said "it's not so much what he did". That's my point, the impact of what he did was quite low. Sure it looked bad. Sure, it could have been much worse.

But it wasn't. Everyone is flipping out about the hypothetical, about what COULD have happened rather than what ACTUALLY happened.

I'm glad Lewis distanced the club from that action, it does nothing to help our team, but the level of shrieking about the incident is incredible.

Who cares if the coach moved him forward? Coaches want to win primarily. Certain circumstances like direct reports for striking, strangling etc. should give the umps an option for the sin bin - would stop acts like Lakes and Halls a few years ago from happening.

It punishes the player and the team on the spot and influences the game in which they are playing - rather than their opponent in the next week (or following weeks). MRP should still do their bit, but for certain acts on the field a sin-bin or yellow/red card system would stop crap like this from happening as often.

Show of strength would be toe to toe, not when one bloke is lying on his back.

So what actually happened last night? A couple of guys had a wrestle, no one got injured and people want 4 or 5 weeks suspension?. Probably the same people who claim the game is going soft.

People are so conditioned by AFL that anytime something physical like this happens that they demand suspensions

Of course we could go down the track of suspending people on the 'potential' of their actions.

Actually there have been suspensions under the sliding rule that didn't cause injuries

That rule itself was brought in specifically because of the potential for injury

And show of strength from Lake, LULZ

Loved how he was consistently 3-5 metres behind Petrie all night long

A better show of strength would have been impacting a contest...

You then get an increase in players trying to goad the opposition into retaliation much more because the benefit is huge and the cost is low.
