With the shortened quarters we are losing about a quarter of football per game, I can't understand how any genuine supporters would be in favour of that.

Especially when it is causing such low scoring games thereafter.

Only person who wants shortened quarters is Gils financial adviser

I feel like comebacks are gone now with the shorter qtrs. If a team gets up by 3 goals now you might as well pack it in, nights over.

That doesn't feel right to me.

It's worked for this year, a great move by the league, but going forward it's not needed.

I like the shorter games. Easier to commit to 2 and a bit hours than nearly 3 hours.

I'd like to see the breaks shortened though. Too much downtime.

Well Freo did win a game two weeks ago that we were behind by 37 points! But it was early in the 1st quarter and probably if it had been a longer game we'd have struggled to hold on.

The only good thing about the short quarters is it seems to have mitigated the "one down on the bench" stuff

Not just bring them back to ‘normal’ but extend them out to the ‘real normal’ of 25 minutes plus time on.
Cut the interchanges to 40 and if that doesn’t fix the current scoring issues, implement a 3 man inside 50 at all times policy!!!

There wouldn’t be any cheap rounds. Big rivalry games take on more significance because you only get one shot at it a year. And you take turns each year being the home side. Would be good, I reckon.
You obviously aren't a financially invested supporter, just a follower that watches TV.

Yeah, the official quarter length was changed in 94-95 from 25 min to 20 min.

They also then changed the way time on was managed to be more strict, blood rules and ball-ups, goals etc clock was stopped

End result being that the actual duration time of quarters remained around the 30min mark....just had more time where no play occurred.

As more congestion and stoppages have come into the game, and with changes to time on application the avg quarter was growing...not unusual for quarters to be 33-34 minutes. Again 20min of play and 14 minutes of shit as people waited to play.

If went back to 25 min plus time on, you would have quarters actually going for over 40mins, considering how Time-on it is currently managed.

What the AFL wants is to get the actual duration of quarters back to the 25-30 min sweet spot.

It involves reviewing how ‘time-on’ is actually managed also.

Simplistic approach could be quarters are 25 min + time on, but time is only stopped after goals or blood rule and stretchers on the ground.

All of the stoppages, throw ins, pausing whilst a player takes a mark etc. clock keeps running.

Umpires told to get play moving - award more free kicks for holding up he ball, don’t wait for rucks to nominate or even get set, penalise deliberate out of bounds even more strictly almost last touch style...a player should be obligated to try and keep ball in play, not have an out.

Give players less time to kick for goal, BenBrown style minute long goal kicking routines...in the bin, should be play on if you are piss farting around like that.

That way we start getting rid of the wasted fluff where we had 14-15 minutes of quarters where time-on was called.

Maybe the umpires need to start throwing the ball up immediately rather than wait for everyone to set up. Same with throwing the ball in. Nominate the ruckmen that can go up pre game then you have to nominate if you want to change. If the ball is thrown up or thrown in without the players setting up then only the default ruckmen can go up. If anyone interferes with the ball up or throw in because they didn't get up in time then free kick against them.

The game is slow enough and the AFL has extended the quarter breaks and main break this year slowing it further.

It's kind of like how the BBL started out with quick games with constant action and now it's stretched to 3.5 hours.

Imagine an added 4 minutes on to the amount of time left in a quarter at any stage and it has always seemed a better proposition to me.
It won’t be back in a season where compression isn’t required.

Get rid of the shortened qrts.
Get rid of ruck nominations. Throw it up/in as quick as possible.

Get rid of excessive interchange rotation. 20 for the game.

watch the game improve drastically.
