Traded Brodie Grundy [Traded to Melbourne for #27]

Grundy is also all banged up and by the time next season rolls round would have been out of the game for close to 12 months. That long on the sidelines at his age can change things and is fraught with risk.

And that’s even if he can get his body right.
Go have a look at his durability over his career …this is the only time he has missed such a large chunk of any season.

Anything is fraught with risk…you think Jackson being offered $900k x 7 isn’t risky?

Jackson is only 20, Grundy will be 29. Comparing apples and oranges here.

Ben Brown came to us injured for pick 28 at a similar age and look how that turned out. Grundy has a similar smell all over it.
In a flag?

The risk in terms of the size of the contract is all the same.
You don’t think Grundy could play the level of football Jackson exhibited this season?

I don’t advocate freo to pay that but they are

I don’t advocate for dees to pay $700k for Grundy but they have to due to the contract Collingwood locked themself in and need off the books.

Dees arnt setting the salary price here, it’s already been set by Collingwood, who need it gone.

If Dees walk away Collingwood can watch Degoey walk away. To be honest my preference would be to throw the cash at Degoey as a free agent instead and keep the first rounder.

Are the Dees seriously looking at Grundy as Jackson replacement?

Seems a strange choice to have Grundy & Gawn in the same side.

They need a better key forward.

Imo, would be better off swapping Jackson for Lobb & draft picks.

A team like the Cats would be a better fit for Grundy.

If Dees have a first involved it would either mean a swap of Freo first from Jackson trade (13), for Collingwood 2022 first (17) or at a minimum have a 2nd coming back.

Couldn’t fathom passing a first over when Collingwood are pushing him out and need him gone for salary cap reasons. Reminds me of when North pushed Ben Brown Coleman medalist out for a late 20s pick and that’s when they didn’t even have salary cap issues.
Tell me more about these salary cap issues Collingwood have. I’m intrigued.

Jamie Elliott missed all of 2018. He’s going to go close to winning us a premiership this year and is in close to career best form.

Stop being so doom and gloom.

This is the most logical thing you’ve said all thread.

You could effectively plonk JDG at FF and play him as an undersized forward and get more goals than Gawn and Grundy combined.

Not sure what Melbourne have in store for Grundy, but it must be something if they’re keen on him. At the end of the day, if you’re paying $600k a year for an AA quality ruckman, it’s not such a terrible deal.

That’s a question for Freo. Dees arnt making the offer.
I’m not a fan of those kinds of deals. Even if it’s for a 23 year old Lachie Neale, Clayton Oliver or a Max King. You cannot predict injuries, form, relationship breakdowns etc.

And still 5 years left!

Nightmare contract. Dees should ask the world for that salary dump
You’ve got that wrong.
Coll should ask the world for Grundy, because without him Melb’s flag hopes, are in tatters, and at worst their Premiership window closes.

There’s no Treloar desperation with Grundy.
Melb are the desperate ones in this negotiation because all clubs overpay to stay in the upper echelons of the flag race.

Melbourne's interest in Grundy signals that Max is more banged up than we'd like him to be.

Late 1st with Collingwood picking up 30% of the contract is about fair.
Not saying that’s cheap, but reckon Pies may ask for a little more if they’re giving up one of the top 3 ruckmen in the competition for $600k a year. Probably something like a 1st and 3rd or 1st and 2nd with a decent draft pick going back with Grundy.

Max is banged up? Have you seen Grundy? Why do think the Pies are willing to let him go with 5 years remaining on his contract?

Because they want to recontract De Goey and they're happy with Cameron and Cox in the ruck.
I reckon it’s more to do with the output of Cameron and Cox and the fact there’s an opportunity for the Pies to strengthen a weakness in another part of the field. I don’t believe it’s a salary dump.

They can’t keep De Goey and Grundy?

Grundy nearly won a Brownlow a few years ago, Cox Will be 32 start of next season but they’re going to let 5 years of Grundy walk out the door?

Knee injury followed by stress fractures in his ankle, he’s played 7 games this year. Collingwood willing to let him leave signals he’s more banged up than they want him to be.

They could. I’m guessing the rumoured Grundy exit is more tied to the want to bring in McStay, Hill and another inside mid (Mitchell or Fiorini).

Darcy Cameron is 27. With Cox, you’d have to look past his age because he did start late, has never really been injured, and plays a fairly bruise-free style of game.

He missed 5 games total in the prior 6 seasons before this impact injury he suffered to his PCL.

Possibility of there being a red flag, but also a possibility you’re just being paranoid because there’s evidence (above) around why the Pies are comfortable letting him go.

Gotta also remember that the Pies have been beaten in Grand Finals by fairly team-oriented, good but not great ruckmen, so may not feel a great ruckman is needed to win a flag.

Your age is your age, playing a bruise free style game doesn’t stop you ageing.

Of course Collingwood aren’t going to come out and say we are trading Grundy because he’s all banged up. Of course they are going to say it’s for other reasons.

You don’t need a great ruckman to win a flag, but what you need are great players and Grundy at his best is that. You don’t let star players leave (and pay part of the contract) to bring in players like Billy Frampton. Collingwood know more and want to get off his contract before it’s too late

Catastrophise away. Grundy will play 80-100 games for us and be an MFC Premiership player.

Will be great if he does, but Melbourne won’t be overpaying for him. Collingwood want him gone. Just like North and Ben Brown.
