Nah I'm not trying to argue, and you're making your points well. Seriously though, last night's gig in isolation shat all over Hanging Rock 2 last year, a show at which they played my favourite song of all time.

You'll notice the difference Cruyff - it might be Stevie's presence, but there's even more energy and interaction and musicianship this time - if that's even possible.
For me Melbourne3 was the best last year, Long Walk Home, My Love, Flood, Youngstown, Murder Inc, Jungleland, will probably top it this year but that was by far the best for me last year.

I'm sure I will, no doubt. But like I said, the first part of the setlist isn't really that outstanding if you take away the two openers.

OK I've had some time to think...

Summertime was so perfect. RussellEbertHandball summed up the Detroit Medley selection - the original setlist was Summertime Blues straight in to Badlands, but he turned around and saw the Detroit Medley sign, walked Stevie over and showed him. Steve said "What? NOW?!" and Bruce just nodded. Max starts it up. BANG. I knew from then it'd be great.

My Love Will Not Let You Down... YES!

The highlight for me - and this going to seem weird in a gig where so many premieres or rarities were played - was Darkness in to Prove it '78. Possibly the most phenomenal, powerful and meaningful 15 minutes of my life (musically). It is on par with Incident from HR 2.

I loved the duo of Death > Jack Of All Trades. Never been a massive fan of them but they actually really stood out.

Joad... massive.

If I Should Fall Behind was so beautifully perfect. And Thunder Road was perfect - I didn't see that one in 2013 so it was special for me, personally.

The highlight of the night was catching up with a few mates after the show. They picked up cheap seats behind the stage a few days before the show, on my recommendation. The look in their eyes was "What the F*CK did we just witness?" They were gobsmacked.

I took my old man along with me. We're really close but don't see as much of each other these days, and going to gigs is something that we still do together. He just simply said "Now I know what you've been talking about... that was quite simply the best gig I've ever seen".

Bring on tonight. You'd expect a more "standard" driven set tonight but who the hell knows. I'm going to be absolutely shagged by Thursday, full working week for me. But who cares.

Their performance this year is 1000% up on last year.

Don't become a Bruce snob. Nobody likes those people.

I'm sure it is, and I will be able to relate from Saturday onwards.

Like I said, it's just my opinion. And I'm not a snob in the slightest. HR1 was a pretty average set last year but by no means was it a poor show. It was like a greatest hits but still great.

Now, now. Settle down fellas ;)

I get Cruyff's point. Go easy on him - the poor bloke is still waiting to get his fix. When I saw the Perth sets coming in, and read the reviews about the intensity, I was thinking "yeah, yeah, whatever".

But now, witnessing it, I get it. And you're right. It's gone up a notch.

Great show, totally blown away, thinking about it more today the old Bill Graham quote about the Grateful Dead is so apt for Bruce and his band; they're not the best in the world at what they do, they're only ones that do what they do.

I was over at the Stone Pony message board and there were a few people complaining about the setlist:

setlst saved by the promise
let's not get carried away

Same damp mix before promise
Where's incident, racing, back in your son's, none but the brave etc, something to make it really special

and

finally someone with sense; solid show, but don't get carried away, please...
epic because he dropped WOASD, that's all

Couldn't believe what I was hearing.

So I went back to them with this (most of which I plagiarised from my review in this thread earlier)

So here's my take for those who think from the looks of it that the show was nothing extraordinary.

I first started listening to Bruce in 1997. Tracks was the first Bruce release that I could get at the same time as everyone else. I followed the reunion tour online in 99/00, but being a Perth native I knew my chances of seeing him live were as remote as my hometown.

Sure Bruce traveled to Australia, but Perth's remoteness couple with the complete lack of a venue suitable for someone as great as Bruce meant we were always in the dark. Until now of course (thanks Perth Arena).

So I guess you could say that I was going to love the show no matter what happened, seems how the expectations and fandom could cushion me from anything not great. Simply put, it didn't happen. I even sat there thinking that since the guy's performed so many drop-dead brilliant shows, he was probably due for a stinker and that knowing my luck, it would have been my night.

Didn't happen.

Perth #3 ruled. Hopefully the downloads confirm that for those not there. The energy that the band gave off was insane. I've stood in front of Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Tony Iommi, Eddie Van Halen and Dean Ween (at different times obviously), and I still can't recall a guitar barrage like Saturday night. It simply didn't let up (save for 'The Promise', 'Terry's Song' and 'Thunder Road' obviously).

Yeah, a part of me wishes 'Backstreets' or 'Racing in the Street' were played, and while they would've been great I don't know if they would've fit the show to be honest.

You see, Perth crowds are a tame bunch. Bruce worked his ass off to get the crowd off theirs, and he when he finally got them on his feet he did his best to keep them there.

Highlights? 'Highway to Hell' was great. Ragged to be sure, but it's AC/DC, not the Eagles. It's supposed to be ragged. The Darkness four-punch to the guts signalled the intent of the night and it just carried on from there.

Having said all that, it was a song I never liked ('Terry's Song') that had me on the verge of tears. Played by sign request, dedicated to a guy called Erik, whose picture was on the request sign. Not sure whether he's passed, or ill, but damn it was such a moving performance that the YouTube clip, as great as it is, doesn't do proper justice.

Such a great night, and even though a glance at the setlist may make you think "meh"... don't ever try and tell me it wasn't special. Because you couldn't be further from the truth.

Ciao!

Fantastic show last night. Agree with UpForGrabs absolutely. The Rising was probably the first Boss album I got into. I was just happy to hear and see a music legend. Did not disappoint

Jack of All Trades is amazing. Very close to my highlight of Brisbane1 last year.

BRUCE. The song's title if Harry's Place, not Mary's Place. Do something to remedy this.

Jack of All Trades was amazing. As was Wrecking Ball

Ghost of Tom Joad was the highlight for me, what a tune, Tom Morello really brings something to the band. I liked the way that they honoured Danny and Clarence during Tenth Avenue Freeze Out too, it was a nice touch. E Street Band is also another case of great rhythm section great band.

Bruce a couple of songs earlier i think had take letter from the woman Hodges 153 mentioned and spent 90 seconds or so reading it will the band just played music. He at the start of This is Your Sword said this is for the lady who gave me the letter and whose daughter is in the army.

The letter was written by her daughter.
Bruce asked her if her daughter was here, she said "no, but she will be in Brisbane".
Dead set monty to get pulled up to dance in Bris, which, judging on pics, would be a good thing lads. :p

Then Bruce goes to Stevie we have a sign request Stevie. A couple of the girls and a lady have a bit low cut tops and have written stuff on their chest. The cute blonde with Ramrod on her chest gets her request.

Ramrod had been on the teleprompt scroll-through before the show anyway....

So just taking advantage of the low cut top on the pretty girl up front and the writing on her chest. Consummate professional. :thumbsu:

If they've got any brains, they all will. It is ridiculously hot here today, and they'll be crook by the time the doors open. Five minutes outside - not even in the sun - and you're toast.
As soon as we get wristbanded I'll go hide in the car park like I did yesterday. It was actually fine (comparatively). Because the concrete there had been in the shade all day it was a lot cooler, plus sitting down helped obviously. And once I got inside I sat down at my spot and didn't stand back up till about 7.30 apart from going to get a drink.

RussellEbertHAndball I just sourced a GA for tonight and gave to Mrs Hodgey.....

This show is too good for both of us to miss it!

:)

Are you coming along too?? :thumbsu:

Part 3,

Firstly i apologies for the poor grammar in first 2 parts. I was rushed but have gone back and cleaned it up - close to all I think.

So Dancing in the Dark comes on, so the obvious question is who will it be. Someone holds a sign up and I can't read it but Bruce shows it to the camera it says "My dad came all the way from Lillyhammer he wants to dance with Stevie."

I looked across and its Nigel and his daughter who I met in the line up on Tuesday morning was the one with the sign. I start pissing my self laughing. Nigel Neil gets up and starts dancing and then Bruce throws a guitar around his neck. Nigel is about 64 and is a rock n roll fan and businessman. He ran Wards Express air courier in Sydney and Adelaide before TAA/Australian Airlines took them over in the early 1990's. Nigel was the lolly boy at the Beatles Sydney shows at the Hordan Pavillion back in 1964.

Danni had made a sign - pick the naughty girls in front. Bruce asked who are they, and he pointed to the girl with the Ramrod writing on her chest and 2 friends and a mum. So 4 of them get up and dance.

During 10th Avenue a few people in front of me leave so they can get a number for tonight so end up right on the stage in the corner where Selina is for the second half of 10th Ave and Shout. I take my small note pad adn write Stevie a note about who Nigel is and the Beatles stuff and show it to him whilst Bruce goes to the back. he signals he can't take it now. But at the end after their bows he comes down grabs the small note and gives me his pick. A good laugh.

Bruce is in fine form during his 2 solo acoustic encore songs. Really nice version of If I Should Fall Behind. When I read that Thunder Road was only acoustic and no Roy I thought that wont be as good. But given the amount of earth quaking, booty shaking, heart stopping, love making type moments during mainly a massive rock n roll show we had, it actually was a perfect version to wind down the night. The only sour note was this young lady who had pushed her way up to behind me and sang it out loud and was ahead of Bruce and out of pitch. I sang it too myself.

Was still buzzing for a few hours after the show.

What a great great show. Can it be topped? - who knows but with Bruce - NEVER EVER SAY NEVER.

I will find out in a few hours time, but 70 different songs in 4 shows in Oz. Will we get another dozen new ones tonight???

I want to make a big sign and get a few people in the pit to hold it up. Will have to wait until the next tour.

BRUCE AND THE E STREET BAND,
NOT THE GREATEST MUSICANS
TO EVER WALK THE PLANET,
BUT ****IN' CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!

Have downloaded Perth 3. Highway To Hell sounds like a massive wall of sound being thrown at you that you can't get enough of. Adam sounds ******* amazing with horns.

Woweeeeeee oh boy

Set the FLAC download before I left home this morning.

Can't wait to get back tonight and give it a listen.
