Thread was from the start of the year when things were a bit different, but yes cotchy by a mile now!

No way known is he a more rounded footballer.
Gibbs has a distinct advantage as a defender and outside midfielder, Cotchin has a distinct advantage as an inside midfielder and forward. Both are very rounded footballers, but Cotchin is better

He had a better year, yes. Sorry, but one season never maketh the player in my book; particularly in a comparison where the other two were injured in some way or other.
But yes. We all understand Richmond are excited about The Cotch. And a good player he is.
I actually agree with the statement. Generally over the course of his career he has shown to be a more rounded footballer. Played pretty much every role you could think of and excelled in them.

Off of last seasons performance Cotchin easily. However, Gibbs has been played out of position virtually his whole career. I still believe he has more potential than Cotchin but hasnt been afforded the opportunity Cotchin has nor has he had the impetus to forge out a prime midfield role.
Had the tables been turned and Cotchin was at Carlton and Gibbs at Richmond who knows?
Malthouse has already indicated he will run him through the midfield more often and Im certain he will thrive given this chance.
It should play out much like Dangerfields shift this year. This coming season will see the gap between the two bridged.
All it takes is a decent coach to see things the way they are.
Carlton guys, come on. It's easy to be biased, but noone would take Gibbs over Cotchin.

i seriously think you ppl read what you want to read.
both monkey and i have both conceeded that he had the better year and as such takes the bigfooty, "wah wah our player is better" award.
i mean, god forbid our memories should stretch back further than 12 months.
all we said was that he was a more rounded player. you'd think we'd just declared watts the best forward in the game.
personally, i enjoy watching both players. i don't need to bump old threads when the current state of affairs might warrant it.

Great in theory... but... Gibbs has never had a good overall season. No one outside Carlton rates him.
Trent Cotchin by a country mile, but at the start of the year when this poll was created I would have said Cotchin by a regular mile. I can't believe that this could ever be debated. I can't believe all of the Carlton fans who think Gibbs is even close, let alone better in some areas. Get your blue blinkers off people! If Cotchin played for Carlton you Blues supporters would be hailing him as the best mid since Diesel.
Oh, and just for the record I think Cotchin is also better than Murphy, and I do rate Murphy highly, I just think that Cotchin is one of the most elite players in the comp, with possibly only a couple of midfielders in the competition being better (and also older).

Gibbs may not be as good as Cotchin but he can seriously play. Would be a welcome edition to Collingwood with his footskills.

Maybe you are thinking he has played a variety of roles successfully but that doesn't make him a more rounded footballer. Gibbs is a good footballer who has stalled in his development. Cotchin is now a gun, 2 B&Fs, 2nd in a Brownlow, winner AFLCA award 2012, AA etc. He is better than Gibbs in all facets of the game for mine barring perhaps overhead. On that basis he is a more rounded player. I would back Cotchin to do a better job than Gibbs in any role you might ask them to play. Gibbs clearly has inside limitations and lacks hardness in the contest.
Because he hasn't been able to establish himself in Carltons midfield so has been asked to play a number of different roles doesn't make him more rounded. Cotchin would be midfield in any team he played because the quality of his midfield play would demand he play there. He wouldn't be allowed to be wasted anywhere else in the same way as all the other gun midfielders e.g Ablett, Judd, Swan, Pendles,Watson, Selwood, Kerr, Black etc etc. Gibbs hasn't quiete achieved that
i would argue that is the defining trait of a well rounded player.
funny, when judd wins a brownlow it means nothing, but when the shoe's on the other foot..... may i remind you that gibbs has also had a top 10 brownlow finish.
so wrong. would love to see cotchin take on goodes lol. gibbs defensive game is way better than cotchin's.
