Schalke fans plant flag on top of Dortmund's Christmas tree

As is traditional at this time of year, hordes of tourists have begun flocking to Dortmund's Christmas market in order to eat, drink, generally be merry and also gaze in wonder at what is widely believed to be the tallest Christmas tree in the world, with a total of 1,700 firs used in 2015.

However, the grand opening of this year's festivities were sullied slightly when the good people of Dortmund were greeted by the sight of their famous tree being besmirched by the club colours of their local footballing rivals, Schalke 04.

While the Weihnachtsmarkt display was being set up and anchored down over the weekend, a mischievous Schalke-supporting worker managed to sneakily plant a white and blue flag at the top of the 45-metre-tall tree.

"We're all Schalke supporters," one of the scaffolders, who lives in Bottrop close to Schalke's stadium in Gelsenkirchen, told local outlet Der Westen, but added that they took the flag "down after taking a couple of pictures as memory for other Schalke fans."

"We did not want to annoy the Dortmund fans," he said.

The offending flag was taken down just minutes after it was spotted, but thankfully somebody had a camera phone on hand to preserve the image forever.

On Monday morning, electrical workers replied to the scaffolders bydisplaying a Borussia Dortmund flag on top of the hotly contested Christmas tree.

All in all, it was impressive work and a priceless victory in the eternal struggle for local Ruhr bragging rights

Well that was shit. 64% possession but still outplayed by Hamburg. Lewis Holtby had a cracker for HSV, Hummels had another game to forget. Just couldnt get the ball in the back of the net in the last few minutes. Just shows that anyone can beat anyone in this league

Unless your name is Bayern...

Hey, they drew a couple of weeks ago. Schalke have a really good chance of taking a point off them this weekend i feel. Although now ive said it, they'll lose 8-0

KAGAWAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!! What a game!!!!! I love you Shinji!!!!!
Holy Shit that was one of the best and worst games I have watched, all rolled into one. How about that non-pass by Dost, or the missed shot by Schuerrle, mixed in with that 'should have been' send off of Arnold. And then that soft soft penalty at the death. That was reminiscent of our game against Malaga.

In other news, Bayern lost 3-1 to 'Gladbach, who are almost unstoppable now. Amazing how they had lost 5 straight to start the season, Favre was out, and then all of a sudden, they are knocking on the door. This win closed the gap to 5 points now. Everybody, BUNDESLIGA IS BACK!

Yep, don't regret waking up at 3am for it at all. Yeah, big mistake from Dost. Penalty was a joke and i was blowing up big time. Trying to think who played well and i think the back 4 was fairly good despite being opened up a few times. Subotic was surprisingly good. I was a bit nervous at the start because the commentator said that Ginter would line up at RB with Pischu moving into DM but it ended up being the opposite.

Hoping Gündogan's back injury is not serious, i was sick in my stomach seeing him rubbing his back after that tackle. The build up for that last goal was great too, beautiful football. All in all a really wonderful game to watch. So happy.

Saw this in a tweet regarding this season
Gladbach with Favre: LLLLL
Gladbach with Schubert: WWWWWWDWDW
incredible stuff.
First time Munich have lost in the first half of the year under Pep. Hopefully more to come.

Gladbach played with a back 3 with the combined age of 63 years.

Seems Christensen put in another good performance and is looking like our next Courtois/Zouma.

Just saw the footage of Marwin Hitz digging up the surface for Modeste's penalty kick.... pretty dodgy stuff.

really? it's blatant cheating and when you look at the score of Augsburg 1 Köln 0 it potentially decided the game. I'd be furious if i were a Köln supporter.
Pitches gets ripped up all game so its not like it's totally impossible for the penalty spot to be like that anyway. Penalty taker should have taken more care

That's two totally different things. It's blatant cheating. He's literally dug around the spot to make him slip.

And he (or other players) could have done it during the game. What I'm trying to say is dug up pitches can/do happen during a game. Yes it's a bad look him doing it just before the spot kick but it can also happen throughout the whole game so the penalty taker should always take note of the surface. An even smarter GK would wander around his penalty box in the second half with the occasional dig into the pitch around the penalty spot

Stand there and deliberately dig up parts of the pitch? You'd be ok with Spurs losing because Cech dug up the penalty spot just as Kane went to take a penalty?

It's condoning cheating. Yes the pitch can be dug up, but not to the extent that he did it, in the one spot.

It's no more dirty than a shirt pull or diving. In fact those two things don't happen naturally during the game. Pitch wear and tear does. Like I said looks bad because he did it on just before the penalty but is it really any different if he did it 5 mins before walking around his box? Taker should always place the ball down and look at the spot and safe guard themselves
