Makes you wonder, is Keath going to play second fiddle to Dan Christian all season? or is he looking at a couple of BBL's and call it a day?

Great way to develop players - especially the best performers in Futures.

Sheffield Shield needs to be as close to test standard as possible. That means token spots should not be given to people just because of age.

That said the other states seem to have a better track record at bringing in youngesters.

That's what my side would be. Finch is a proven spud at FC level

So with Finch top scoring in the 2nd innings for the NSW 2nd XI I guess you can lock him in for the next match

Reckon Victoria if they are going to play a spinner will have to pick Holland this week, Ahmed has been disappointing since WA 1st innings and Holland is also in national contention

Agree we need some variety to pace attack but Sheridan is just shit

Also it seems Christian probably earnt his spot for the next match as well with his performance against Tassie, Hastings though was a bit poor

So the squad is

Finch, Quiney, Handscomb, White, Maxwell, Wade, Christian, Hastings, Haberfield, McKay, Holland

I imagine Hussey to play if Wade gets suspended, then just leaves the choice of which spinner

That's my side. Haberfield inclusion is interesting. He provides something different to Boland, Hastings and McKay, at his best he's genuinely quick

Sheridan is just coming back from injury

Poor timing for Wadey, another 100 in the next game or 2 could put him up as a batting option if aussie top order keeps failing.

Given he was the only one not to get a game in England, clearly Boof doesn't rate him at all in anything so doubt it

Besides they only pick players who haven't made a hundred in 18 months for the test side these days

Wonder what Victoria is paying for the wooden spoon?

It will be odds on very soon - something is not right there - Handscomb being made keep is idiotic in my book - which would also be the word I would use to describe Quiney a) being captain and b) sending them in.

Yep, Quiney seemed a very odd decision at 31, someone said he has never captained at any level before and in a side with plenty of players with that experience and its not like he is a future captaincy option

Will never understand the decision to put them in, it seems like they decided they wanted to chase in the 4th innings as the pitch was flat when in reality they should have worried about the 1st innings first

Although he never did much for us, the decision to have Handscomb as backup keeper has driven Carters away and now he is starting to find some form in a state with plenty of keepers and now Victoria doesn't seem to have a genuine backup for Wade

Please....... anyone who thinks the captain makes the decision to bat/bowl on his own is idiotic. The captain in cricket is the most overrated position in cricket. On field, the odd bowling change/field position as decisions, thats about it.

Strongly disagree. Captains have a massive impact on games. Bowling and fielding changes directly influence the result, not to mention building a positive team atmosphere, leading from the front etc.

Whatever it is now I want some of it,the way we develop batsman in vic we are going to be in a world of pain once the current crop retire.hansdcomb is our only young shining light and we make him keep as well.maybe we will go shopping interstate again.

eddiesmith, surely you would agree that the development of Victorian players in the past decade has been poor - very poor?

Some of our best players have been mostly ex pats from other states (Rogers - WA, Dussey - WA, Christian - SA, Hastings - NSW, Wade - Tas etc).

Thought about 2 years ago that we would be royally screwed once the core of our middle order are on the decline and ultimately retire, unselected.

Apart from Handscomb, do you have faith in any of our 'next gen' batsmen coming through? Cric Vic mustn't if we go out and select Stoinis, Christian as all round/batting options. Disappointing really.

I know everyone bangs on about NSW, but they select the kids and throw them in the deep end, where they invariably sink or swim. Victoria don't.

Thoughts on the next gen of Victorian batsmen?

Matt Short has big wraps on him. Keath could be anything. Hill can bat. Theoretically after Dussey/White/Christian retire and Wade is possibly in the test team this would be the side IMO:

Hill, Stoinis, Handscomb, Short, Maxwell, Keath, (keeper), Hastings, Pattinson, McKay, Muirhead
