My kid's teacher is the partner of one of the Senior Western Bulldogs players (not naming as don't want to dox).

Anyway was talking to her this morning and she said that above all else, Caleb is a really really great person and was well loved by all his team-mates. Just an absolute professional and someone who works hard to make his team-mates better.

Good feedback to hear from someone who would know.
Did she say;
Caleb's strengths include: Initiating and contributing to conversations, demonstrating and executing game plans. Caleb uses a variety of sentence structures to enhance engagement, relatability and reinforce his leadership credentials. Caleb's next steps include: Controlling the ball use off half back, applying his knowledge of distribution to help educate his class mates who are inexperienced or unfamiliar with elite ball use.

"Anyone want to come up here and hit a target from half-back?.. Someone other than Caleb?... No Luke M, this is just for the Grade 2s.. Mr Barlow will do kicking with the Grade 1s this afternoon"

Caleb is definitely “talking the talk” since he arrived at Arden Street. All we can ask of him right now really. Big tick for that. However, every day is a day closer to having to “walk the walk”. That’s a far “taller” order. 🤣

Talking the talk?

Never demanded to be traded, probably what cost us our 2nd round pick, and I got the feeling he would have been more than happy to stay at the dogs and fight for his spot.

Now that he’s actually moved to north, what else is he going to say?
Yep it’s talk alright.
I actually agree a bit with this.....by him fence-sitting it didn't really enable us to push the deal through harder and earlier.

How do you know he wasn't pushing behind the scenes? Sure, he might not have gone to the media, but he could have still been pushing the clubs privately to get it done (or his manager at least).

I'm making assumptions about that. You're assuming he was fence-sitting.

From what I have seen in interviews, seems to be a respectful bloke. Talks extremely well. And already has a role to play. Will be great for our younger team.

He was fence sitting in terms of looking out for his own well being.

His manager said he’d be happy to play at both clubs, and the media were reporting it to. It was ‘in case a deal couldn’t get done’. Where you didn’t hear that from Parker.

As far as I’m concerned we did pay high for a guy who wasn’t getting games and had a decent contract on him.

He wanted to come to North, he knew how much we had to give up, he better deliver.

We’ve had many players too concerned with being paid well to coast. From all accounts Daniel doesn’t seem like the type.

Out of interest - what makes you think pick 25 (ends up being pick 30) is so heinous of an overpay that it’s worth having a sook over?

But Bailey Smith was almost same value…..
Out of contract and off an ACL? I hope I don’t need to colour this one in for you

Jack Macrae was 47. He’s also 2 years older and in a position they are stacked in.

What else do we wanna go through? Don’t bring up Rioli or Noble - I really can’t be bothered walking you through why those trades were a false benchmark.

End of the day we got their vice captain and 2023 top 4 B&F for a pick that’s worth selection #30 and he’ll play for at least, you would hope, 5/6 years in the blue and white. What’s that, 100 plus games? Now go have a look through the history books and tell me how long the career tends to be of picks in the late 20s to 30s - it’s not that flash.

Did we pay above market value for him? Yes. Is that literally what happens in 95% of trades for contracted players? Yes. It’s just not worth the complaining.

You answered the question. We paid over the market value for him and that’s what I’m having a sook over.

After there was constant talks about not being to bevo’s standards, not wanted, not being played and having a decent sized contract remaining on him - I just can’t see how there wasn’t more negotiation room from North’s part, absolutely none at all.

As he should look after his own well-being in that scenario.

And overpaid. You're making it sound like we paid a top 10 pick for him. We paid pick 25 that will push into the 30s.

For player that is only 28 years old. Aside from this year, has been top 6 best and fairest at a finals competitive team since 2017 including winning it in 2020 (same year he was AA). And has experience from being involved in both a winning and losing GF. And was contracted.

From what I can tell, he was being respectful to the process and letting the clubs work it out. When it looked like the Dogs were doing nothing, and deadline was approaching he HAD to make the declaration he wanted to go to North, specifically to force their hand. That's what they said on the televised trade thing anyway.

If a player outright declares they want to go somewhere, the AFLPA has kittens if it's not facilitated.

The dogs were happy to let him rot in the VFL as depth or use him as a super sub. They needed to be pushed but CD appears to have believed they would get it over the line. I dont know why with they way they've treated him.

Anyway, happy to have him. Very good player. Great skills. A tad slow but I think we need skills first and foremost.
