Not knocking the kid, but let’s also remember he was essentially pick 70+ from the previous draft. He was eligible for the 2023 AFL draft wasn’t he?
Course I hope he makes it, as we need small forwards who can apply pressure, but it’s gotta be a bit of a long shot, surely.
I think he was seriously undersized and started filling out late. He is born in November? So he is almost a draftee for 2024. Similar to will dawson who was/is very skinny and raw. I think thats why he was overlooked. I might be missing something here also but pretend he’s a 2024 draftee

that's fair, but given we've got a decent cohort of under 21s, wouldn't it just be cream on top for one or all of Payne, Finnbar, RHJ etc to really come on and make a statement

Absolutely. I’m sure that’s the clubs desires/plans. My point was we are expecting a fair bit from an 18 year old who was overlooked 6 months earlier. I’m always surprised we don’t go for an established 2nd tier player who’s a late bloomer sort of thing. Anyway, let’s hope he’s a gun.

The cynical types would say we are topping up the list for one TAS born player each list.

The pressure is on young fella.

I'm backing Geordie to be our answer for F50 pressure, but with Konstanty coming in he's gonna have to earn it.

You've got to be ruthless now, or the dream will slip past.
most teams run with three pressure forwards these days, the two of them could fit in no issues at all.

What does the Fwd line look like with both?

Larkey, Darling, PC
Zurhaar, Payne, Konstanty

Sheez rotating through that half forward?
RHJ?
Eddie Ford?

Does Teakle get a game?

It's a good problem to have

We have tried quite a few over the last few years and have had a poor success rate.

Haven't seen Payne, haven't seen this other guy so will hold my judgement.

Part of me says we're due to hit with this type of player, the other part says that we continually get it wrong so it's hard to assume otherwise.

Either way it's definitely a position we're behind the rest of the competition in and it's why our forward line is so easy to exit for opposition defences.

For the first time in the last five years, we don't see teams just walking the ball out of our forward line, with our flat footed players pointing at each other.
One thing is for sure tackling and pressure is contagious, once you have a couple of players doing it others follow.

Both are unproven and never played a game at AFL level and we're penciling into our forward line as if they're established players.

It's definitely far from being a 'problem' at the moment. We need to start with finding one small pressure forward who is AFL standard. At the moment we have zero.

you're talking like it has happened and they're both established players.
they could both be busts. lets just wait and see before we start proclaiming our small forward issues solved.

our fans have a magic way of getting miles ahead of themselves with any unproven recruit the club gets. immediately pencilling them in as 200 game players.

in both cases the probability of them being 100 game players is low considering how they were acquired. if one of them plays 100 games and establishes themselves at AFL level then I'd be happy.

you could give me a day, before dashing my dreams....

I think both DesertRoo and I are looking at it from our 2024 season perspective where we've literally had no option other than RHJ and Eddie Ford at times.

You can choose to have a negative outlook on life and moan about how we have 2 unproven 20 year olds on our list, or you can say hey 2 unproven 20 year olds could be anything lets talk about how we can make them fit in our forward line.

If you're this gloomy about shit I pity you, honestly.

gloomy?

I'm just being realistic. We've won 6 games in 2 years and you're talking up two guys who have never played an AFL game as if they're established AFL players.

the expectations placed upon players is absolutely ridiculous. they haven't played a game and they're talked up as if they're going to immediately solve our issues.

people on here still talk up RHJ despite the fact he's soft and nowhere near AFL standard. and you're also mentioning RHJ not playing as some sort of problem indicating an abundance of quality :p.

if either of these guys play ahead of RHJ then i'd be happy.

You're literally making this up. No one said "they're going to immediately solve our issues". I said it was good to have the issue that its tough to get a spot in the forward line.

"I'm just being realistic". Look at the effect your comment had on DesertRoo and realise it has the same effect on the general discourse of anyone who comes in here to comment.

You choose to take the "realistic view" that because they're not star players already its not worth talking about any positives their contributions to our list could achieve. That having them on the list doesn't create pressure that could push everyone to perform better. Great, they could potentially not make it. But they potentially could be good players. You're choosing to take a shit view of it and claiming you're the one being realistic.

If your default of "realistic" is negative, you need therapy.

but it's not tough to get a spot in the forward line. it's still going to be a conveyor belt until someone actually grabs the spot and establishes themselves. in recent years it hasn't been tough and from a small forward perspective you need multiple performing players for it to be 'tough'.

again, you're the one talking like we've got a problem in terms of depth when at this point in time have zero performing small forwards. hence why we got Payne in the PSD and brought Konstanty in. both cases the price was low so I have no issues from a recruiting perspective but I'm not going to proclaim that it's tough to get a spot until we actually have at least one performing small forward.

realistic in my case is saying to temper expectations and predictions until they have played a few games. I haven't written anyone off except RHJ.
