News Cam McCarthy to the Pies?

I have no opinion one way or another but I remember a no-hoper traded into this club via freo and north melb who did pretty good.
If the kid has no backbone we don't want him.
But the attitude of some on here is plain laughable.

From an outside perspective. Leigh Browns application would look worlds apart from Cam McCarthys.

Im all for ratbag talented players (didak was my favourite through his whole career) swan, daisy who put in the hardwork.

Im not for lazy/disinterested players. Beams, McCarthy

If we didnt learn our lesson with Beams, we are in a bit of trouble

They are not the same, individually or situationally. Stop the reductive comparisons.

From an outside perspective indeed.
That is what the club is being paid to investigate.
But of course some of us want to pre-empt it.
Par for the course with BF.

Wasnt aware. But still not a fan of a spot being spent on a guy thats quit 2 clubs?

Give it to a prospect KPF that doesnt get drafted. Someone that has a hunger to play football at its highest level. As im sick of disinterested/long shot list cloggers. It is still a rookie spot , but we need to be realistic with those that take those spots

Find us another Mihocek, a pure footballer
For every Mihocek you get on the rookie list there are 10 guys who get delisted within 12 months. McCarthy has proven that he can make the grade in the right role, the odds of him succeeding are far higher than a random rookie of draft age or from the state leagues. FWIW I’m agnostic on McCarthy and I have huge reservations myself, but as a free hit as a supplementary rookie I can’t really see the issue with at least giving him a trial over the preseason.

I read through the 15 page thread on McCarthy on the Fremantle board. Most posters regretted that he had been told he would not be a required player but the general feeling was that he was not putting in the hard work and that his lifestyle away from the club was questionable. Prior to McCarthy stating a wish to play for the Pies there was a general feeling that no other AFL club would take him given he has unceremoniously left two clubs. Apparently epilepsy medication takes a number of months to get into balance and the side effects of the period of imbalance would have worked against his ability to commit himself to AFL footy. There does seem to be a fair amount of goodwill towards him and no real outright hostility, and a few referred to him as a crowd favourite. So there is perhaps something to work with if we are able to take him as a rookie.

Freo and McCarthy agreed to part ways. They weren't going to play him or give him a contract for 2021. They both agreed going to the hub with no real hope of playing wouldn't be good for his mental health.

The bolded does raise exclamation marks. We don't have a great track record with players with mental health issues.

There will be plenty of THis iS JuSt LiKE BEamS!1! being passed around between bongs, but the situations are very different. Cam McCarthy is a DFA, will cost nothing in draft capital and is only 25yo playing a position we need.

With his skillset, if we did our due diligence by talking to Cam and to Longmuir, and he was willing to put the work in over the offseason, we were happy his epilepsy was appropriately managed... I’d be all for getting him across on a club-friendly contract.

If i was going to take a risk on a mental forward it would be Hogan at least his best is elite. Imo Mcarthy has talent but it is in a 3rd med tall capacity and even then not sure how he stands up to scutiny/pressure.

A “mental forward”? Really? You’re going to run with that?

So we get Brown, Wright and McCarthy...and their teams get a list dump AND a shot at McDonald?
Yeah sure, let's keep making the same mistakes...(Beams, Mayne, Wells)....

Stay the course Pies, go to the draft.

I don't think McCarthy would stop us being able to target the draft. He's a DFA and represents a free hit. It won't impact our draft hand so if we want to draft a key forward we still can. There are plenty of reasons not recruit McCarthy but I don't think that's one.

Kietel vs McCarthy?

Its the thought process really. "Yeah we'll take your rejects and you can take the guns"....let the other clubs deal with their own problems!

Im happy to be proven wrong. But with list reductions coming? We need to be covered better on player positions. Third tall, lead up forwards we have an abundance of that can play that position.

Mihocek, Whe, Stepheson, Elliott , De Goey , Thomas

He may train the house down and get on the rookie spot, track record shows he wont stick at it. Thats the known?? risk that we shouldnt take

Not doubting his talent, doubting his dedication
