Re: Bruce quits club

Difficult to know what to think without all the details.

If he was holding out for money, the club should take the blame. If he wanted 2 years, then sorry Cam but that was never going to happen.

Looking on the positive side though, should leave a bit of money and an extra spot to go after someone in the PSD.

Good luck to him, has given us ten years and is not crucial so let him go off and do what he wants.

Completely agree. If I was 31 and on an AFL list, two years would mean a whole lot more to me than one. We weren't prepared to offer it, so the risk was always there that he would go to a club that would give him the extra year and $$$.

Upside to it is that when we next play against his new club, he's likely to hit a demon on the chest first time, every time.

Cale Morton needs to step up and fill the breach.

Re: Bruce quits club

Everyone cut sick at the club when Trav was traded and that was a massive win.

Everyone cut sick at McLean when he left and that's worked out nicely so far.

Now everyone is having a go at Bruce. I say good luck to him, if we can't be strong enough to with stand his loss then we weren't going anywhere anyway. He might get a chance of 2 years best 22 footy and a flag.

I think its sad for all of us because we now only have Green left from 2000 and Green, Davey and Rivers left from the 2004-2006 Daniher era. It was a period where I thought we had stars of the comp and could go close. Miller is another shining hope from that time who's faded.

Whoever he goes to better start buying some track suit pants.

Re: Bruce quits club

Article says he was happy with 1 year (although wasn't firm on it) but couldn't get assurances about his place in the side.

Anyways Bruce is pretty average but gee you guys have lost a fair bit of experience recently.

Re: Bruce quits club

I don't think Bruce was average at all personally. Bit of a loss, especially with JMac gone. Time will tell.

Great point, you've managed to put into words what I couldn't.

I feel exactly the same way. Only Green is left from the Green-Bruce-Johnstone trio I fell in love with.

I would have loved nothing more than to see Brucey in a Melbourne jumper with a premiership medallion around his neck.

Appears that Brucey himself realised that there weren't going to be any premiership medallions hanging from his neck if he stuck with us. I'd do the exact same thing if I was in his (or the club's) position, but I naturally hope we smash him next time we play him.

Re: Bruce quits club

I can understand both sides holding their positions in this instance. If melbournes policy is 1 year contracts for over 30s they need to stick to it - or every time a player comes to this point, they will hold out and call the clubs bluff. We will probably retain more players in the future by sending this message now.

All the best to Bruce though - one of our champs of the last era.

Wow, that's a real shame..Bruce has been a terrific player for us, it's a real shame he won't finish as a Demon. The positive to is that it shows we are very strict and aggressive with our list management and an opportunity opens up for a half back flanker. Still, as a fan I'm disappointed to see him go out like this.

Re: Bruce quits club

I think his decision is a fair one. If he took the one year contract extension on the table, odds are even with a solid year of footy he wouldnt be offered a new contract next year.

I would rather leave on my own terms than be forced out as has been the case for many of our senior players over the past few years.

Re: Bruce quits club

Good riddance. Average player at best and certainly no leader.
Overall I think he was a good player but I definately agree about his leadership qualities. Leaders don't do what he has just done.

Personally I don't think he will be overly missed it will just give players like Morton more opportunities.

The only problem I have with this is the fact that we have now lost our best 2 stoppers in McDonald and Bruce. I'm finding it hard to know how we are gonna stop star midfielders from running riot. Bartram and McKenzie are going to have to step up big time, I hope they don't think Jones is the answer.

I can't wait to see Hawthorn's injury toll climb when they get crunched due to a hospital handball or helicopter punt from Bruce. I knew we should of got rid of Bruce instead of McDonald.

Re: Bruce quits club

It really grates me when people say things like "he was a soft player" etc. Bruce never played as an inside midfielder. Very few players play as an inside midfielder. His role was not to crash packs and lay huge tackles. His role was to use his greatest asset, his fitness, to run all day and consistently provide us with 20+ touches. All this crap about "he was always just an average player" is rubbish. At his best, he was an extremely dangerous forward or a dynamic midfielder who could also tag very effectively. He was even a top defender at stages. Let's not forget how good this man was. Yes, he had some down points and I had called for him to be dropped at stages but most 31 year olds feel the pinch unless they are star players, which admittedly he is not. Given his fitness and the role he plays, I see no reason why he couldn't have played another 2 years and provided a similar output to his years since 06.

Goodbye Cameron, best of luck for the couple of years you have left in the league. It'll be very sad watching you in other colours :(

Haha, nice.

No need to rag on Bruce, it's sad to see another experienced player leave the demons prematurely but we know where we are going and what the ultimate priority is. I wonder how the playing group feels about it..

G'day Captain Green.

Re: Bruce quits club

Bit of a surprise, not sure why you would be looking for "security" as a 31 year old.

At North once you crack 30, you get 1 year contracts and nothing more. Harvey has been on a string of 1 year contracts and the club is still confident he can "probably" play 2 or 3 years if he avoids major injury. But, as all past players know, you become very prone to soft tissue injuries when you are older and the end can come fast and unexpected no matter how good you feel.

You don't want to burden the club just out of the desire to keep playing.

You guys have no choice, you have to stick to your guns. We did when Martyn couldn't swallow the reality pill, he went to Carlton and was just riddled with soft tissue injuries and had a regrettable end to his career.

Bit of a difference because we got 1st round picks for Trav and Mclean..

Allthough i agree mostly with your post.
Dissapointed at the club for loosing a guy that gives his all every game but also is a very good footballer. Remember we can never have too many good footballers in our team no matter of age.

Re: Bruce quits club

I wouldn't be so sure. Our last live pick is in the 80s or something now so we could either take McDonald or Johnson back - or even Bruce himself if he makes it through??

Cormades.

When Brock announced he was going to leave, it really shock me up - and I was not Robinson Crusoe. And at the same time, Davey was out of contract and making noises. But then the old hard-drive light started to flicker and I thought to myself (as did others): how much of a loss is Brock really? You know the rest.

With me at least, I am not at all bothered by Bruce's decision to leave. From what we are now hearing, it was more to do with not being guaranteed a place in the XXII rather than the coin (and he has made enough of that over the years). If so, any club that is prepared to offer that sort of guarantee to a 31 year old who is not overly blessed with skills is actually asking their current coach to don the Shirt of Nessus, much like Terry Wallace and Kent Kingsley at Richmond (KK cost the Tigers little, but that meant bugger all to the Richmond ferals).

I would not be surprised if he was not picked up per se. Dammit he is 31 and no champion,

If this decision evokes any sort of reaction from me it is one of bewilderment: how can one guy be so dumb?

Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.

Re: Bruce quits club

Yes it's sad to see Brucey go but on a positive note, it gives a player like Morton to step up.

What I find funny is how Hawthorn are potentially chasing him! That club is going to be a basket case in a couple of years if it keeps paying overs for players i.e David Hale.
