New research has found people who start using cannabis from a young age are up to three times more likely to suffer from psychotic illness.

The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) study found young adults who used the drug for six years or more from the age of 14 had the greatest risk of developing symptoms.

wont sit well with a lot around here. but in my line of work I tend to agree, see it everyday in case management.sad but true.

Mull just aint what it used to be.
This hydro stuff is so potent man.
Seriously, I am guessing that this psycosis is related to the new breeds of extra strong skunk being grown.
Give me bush grown pot and I am a happy camper.

Anecdotally, this has been known for a long time.

The question still remains though whether cannabis causes psychosis, or whether people who are likely to experience psychosis seek out cannabis.

We need the Queensland Brain Institute to tell us what we already know?

Drinking XXXX from the age of 14 will increase your ability to be a total loser for life.

Stay away from the drugs kiddies.

This is exactly right. Many studies have shown the link. But there is a serious question over the causation.

I once believed the cannabis can lead to psychosis theory, but I now wonder if it is not more simply a case of 'the people who are more likely to experience psychosis are also more likely to use cannabis, possibly even due to their mental problems (which usually exist prior to any psychosis)'.

Yes we can link what we want to make people believe and achieve quite easily. Mass media jumps on and sucks them in.

A much more accurate summary without sensationalist type headlines.

Since the center opened in 2000, medical marijuana use has spread rapidly in California, driven largely by doctors' willingness to recommend it for a wide range of ailments.

There was some bullshit on today tonight the other day about the dangers of weed.

I tuned in and learnt that a guy was not right in the head after smoking 30 joints a day for 15 years.

FFS, Pot is harmless people.

People who are depressed or psychotic smoke it to make them feel better, the effects are absolutely minimal.

You are more likely to get in trouble dealing with shady drug dealers, which is why it should be legal.

And cannabis use fights dymentia... so you know.... swings and roundabouts sweetheart.

Part of being a human is that organs are going to fail on you one way or the other. No guarantees. And if smoking dope keeps you relaxed and enjoying your time on earth then its probably good for you because stress is the biggest killer out there.

I guess there's a whole bunch of separate issues that this raises:

- the personal choice of a knowledgeable adult to use cannabis (as with cigarettes and alcohol), a potentially harmful recreational drug
- medicinal use of cannabis where alternatives aren't available
- the increased mental health issues associated with starting at a young age, and the difference between non-adult users and adult users
- whether or not there is causation between harmful effects and the drug, or whether people suffering psychosis use the drug because they already suffer those effects

Of course, chances are the media will pick up on a single message: "Drugs are bad, mmmkay"

The Queensland Brain Institute.. sounds like an oxymoron.

Guess if your looking for some funding go hard at 14 year old pot smokers.

I want know what it is that makes parents abusive at kids sport or why young men who mostly have no control over themselves due to their genetic conditioning get no support when they do exactly what they are programmed to do.

Well it definately was a factor in a good friend hanging himself.

Wasn't the only factor, but it defiantely magnified every thing ten fold and ****ed him up big time.

I had mate do the same, was quite young when it happened too. I agree the dope was a factor - but I don't blame the dope. It's just a plant.

I blame the scum ****s who grow and sell it.

That's pretty cheap man. People want drugs, they're going to get drugs.

People tend to smoke weed more when they're younger because its not regulated and much easier to get (and cheaper) than alcohol.

You should probably blame the legislators who keep it illegal and uncontrolled (and in the hands of kids) before you blame the guys who grow it.

So if I grow my own - you love me? ;)

I tell you what - I know quite a few professional folk who are regular tokers .....no issues.

Trouble is as professionals they can not come out and say - hey I have a toke ....as it is their job and reputation (though you can go and drink a bottle of Dom and vomit at the Corp party and it is OK).

As they can't speak out you get a distorted view of who is smoking.

Mulling up at a young age is very bad ...perhaps that is the line the Govt should be running in health promotion.

So if I grow my own - you love me? ;)

As long as you're only ****ing yaself up with it in the privacy of your own home then go for it.

As for the attitude you can drink as much as you like being OK, it's not.

It's disgraceful and unhealthy, and anyone who does that is one ****ed up sad individual.

People smoke weed when they're younger because they are simple minded sheep.

Legalising it wont stop kids getting it, it'll just create a double market place and make it more readily available.
