The uproar about our cap is built on the premise that our filler players are the same quality as someone like Geelong or Brisbane, unfortunately this isn't the case and thus outside of our 22 we really wouldn't be paying too many players much at all.

Fremantle and Carlton have admirers and sceptics. Nathan Buckley nurses doubts about the Blues, due to their reliance on a plan A that can be undone. Fremantle do not yet have the age profile of a premier and still have scoring issues. That said, no team has a more potent fab five than the Blues in Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh, Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay and Jacob Weitering; if they can gain more from Adam Cerra and the oft-injured Jack Martin and Mitch McGovern, if Tom De Koning arrives and they find a small forward with bite (Jesse Motlop?); above all, if they improve their defensive/transition method, the Blues can make the great leap forward.

I think they’ll play finals and frighten everyone.

Changed his tune since Friday

Former Collingwood coach and champion Nathan Buckley has expressed doubt about Carlton’s credentials in 2023, predicting the Blues would miss finals.

Buckley acknowledged Carlton was a dangerous team with high capabilities, but still felt they would miss finals - in what would make a full decade without finals.
“I reckon they’ll miss (finals),” Buckley told The Age, speaking at the Fox Footy season launch.

Reality is when it’s finals time your stars are the ones who win u games

No one wants to play the fab five in finals

NO ONE
problem is * will have already won the flag in may..........

I think people are under-estimating the difficulty of making finals for 'the next 15 teams' after Melbourne Brisbane and Geelong.

Carlton can't make finals just off the work of Cripps/Weitering/Charlie and Harry and the theoretical best team is already never going to happen because of Williams' ACL and a list of pre-season injuries and unavailability signs to potentially important players: Martin/Cuningham/Durdin/Marchbank.

In order for Carlton to beat teams it will require significant territorial wins and dominant inside 50 entry statistics - so that Harry and Charlie get enough chances to kick a score in the absence of any meaningful contribution from the other four forwards on the field ( 4-6 goals a game on average).

Maybe TDK/Pittonet can develop into an at least break -even ruck duo. Maybe Fisher/Motlop/SOJ can start clicking 4-6 goals a game between them week in week out. These are my two big IFs that have to be accomplished and if they are, Carlton will play finals for sure and if they aren't - it is struggle street with fingers crossed again - all that assuming no more catastrophic injuries to key players who cant be replaced for quality.

Unless there is additional evidence of transitional movement of the ball from our defensive half which wasn’t really evident in the Sydney practice match then it will be a struggle.

and that underlines exactly where the weaknesses in the list are- flanks ( meaning wing and HFF) and rucks...

between the arcs instead of TDK /Pittonet taking field marks we have the kick it to Cripps or Kennedy caper- onballers expected to run 100meters in 10seconds otherwise they are "too slow" but also do all the heavy tackling/win ball and make precise inside 50 entries to two targets always double teamed because the other four forwards are no threat to anyone.

the stars are good enough to win games against most lower middling sides but you need 22 players to win the big ones.
