Carlton matchups

I agree with all your matchups really out side of the Grant/Jones matchups. I think thortin will go to Jones and Laidler Grant purely cause of Jones better contested marking ability requiring a taller player.

I also think Yarran and Scotland have been left out of your matchups. I would not be surprised to see gilbee have a defensive forward job again like he did against the pies but on scotland this time.

I don't think Gilbee has the pace to contain Yarran but he seems a good match-up for Scotland.

I would not be surprised to see Murphy sent back to take on Waite..I think they match up very well...I doubt your other KP Defenders would have the speed and agility to go with Waite...Murphy does..

Also Gibbs will go straight to Griffen..which in my opinion will be the most interesting duel of the day. If Gibbs can shut him down, or even just make him accountable going the other way, it will go a long way towards the Blues chances.

Probabal in's for us: Duigan Outs: White

I'd think shutting down Gibbs himself is a major problem for us.

I rate him as one of the best users of the ball in the comp.

I will be surprised if anyone apart from Williams is assigned to Waite.

Williams took Riewoldt and has size speed and agility required.

Correct, Williams gets Waite, not sure what team some people watch sometimes when they suggets Markovic, Murphy etc to play on him

Williams - Waite
Markovic - Kruezer/Warnock
Morris - Betts

Garlett big danger prob give Wood first crack.

It's called...having a different opinion to yours.

I know a lot of the talk has been around our back line match ups, but if we are to give this game a real crack it all depends on our forward line.
Midfield and backling matchs are about even, give or take.

Our forward line must make Carlton's backline accountable as there run from the back line can destroy us if we dont put enough pressure on. Therefore the mids and backs will look like they get beaten.

I've been a few carlton games this year and given space out of their backline are as good as i've seen. Hopefully our new found pressure mkes them honest.

With Jamison out we have to expose Henderson and Tuohy. Henderson is fast enough to keep up with Hall on the lead, have to isolate them so all gets a strength advantage. I've been to a few Carlton games lately and Tuohy plays better than the 3 or so games he's played. I'm assuming he'll match up on Dal. He must be pressured at every chance. Looking at the matchups below (imo) there is no Yarran, Carrazzo or Scotland which = a lot of run. Hopefully they dont drop Touhy so they will play up and then push back to help out. Quick entries they won't... this is our best chance to win i think

Gibbs,Laidler,Touhy
Gilbee,Jones, Dal

Russell, Henderson, Thornton
Gia, Hall, Grant

Half forward could be Gilbee, Ward, Cooney whoever depending who rotates.

A question though, could Cross go to Gibbs? I don't know if i like the idea of him running with Judd etc. They are too quick. Gibbs isn't as fast and probably should be tagged. He went to Fisher against StKilda with mixed results. I don't know, just a thought

Their 2 main goal scorers this season have been Walker and Garlett. I reckon Morris will go to one of them. My bet is Walker. Murphy to take Garlett.

Makes sense to me that Williams will take Waite. Marko gets the resting ruck.

Picko will go with Judd.

Other than that they will have their own issues with Griffen, Ward, Boyd and Cooney and then I'm not sure they have a good match for Hall if he's on fire.

If Hall is on fire, no we don't :S

We'll be depending on team defense to counter the BBBH Factor.

We'll probably send Carrazzo to Griffen and Gibbs may go to Cooney and try to make him accountable.

Predicting a good match of footy :thumbsu:

There's a big decision for the MC to make regarding the second ruckman and possibly one other matchup I see is Addison to Yarran. Addison's been favoured in this role earlier in the season, but just couldn't get his body right and string games together.

Barlow absolutely must play. Critical to the team's structure. Particularly if Jones plays as the second ruckman again which I suspect the MC may go with again to maintain the mobility thy desire through the forward line. The mobility and flexibility he has added to the side since his elevation from the rookie list has been one of the turning points of the overall team performance. While he's not the most highly skilled player by foot, he presents at the footy, takes a strong mark and has great recovery, this is what creates pressure and turnovers and gives the team its spine and predictability, allowing the other more highly skilled players to attack and break the lines with more confidence. Jones does the same.

In terms of other match-ups, Williams must take the key forward (probably Waite). Morris I would think would take Walker who is probably the best overhead mark after Waite (plays tall), while the more fleet of foot would take Garlett and Betts (Wood and Murphy). Markovic would take Kreuzer and possibly any other deep resting forward when Williams has a spell, he will blow up if he travels too far up the ground.

The advantage of having Wood, Murphy, Higgins and Gilbee down back is you can always work one or two of them free to rebound, they're all good kicks and set-up players and also pretty good one-on-one. I disagree with earlier comments about Higgins, I thought his strength in the marking contests and ability to stand up in or break tackles was one of the features of his play last week. Obviously he's a great ball user and decision maker, has always been but he looked very strong in defence to me. Looking like a Rocket master stroke for me, the switch first happend in second half of the Geelong match.

As with any game against Carlton you've got to take them out of their comfort zone. The Eagles gave them no space to create and made them slow their attack in a very disciplined performance, the same sort of intensity has to be brought by the Dogs.

They (Carlton) do have a lot of good players with pace and skill, if you can slow the ball movement you're always in with a chance because they are a little short in defence.

I still think Carlton's favourites but the Dogs bring some of that form from Friday night it will be a pretty tight contest and they might just be a sneaky chance. Particularly now that cooney and Higgins are running out the matches and Barry's got two solid hit-outs under his belt and is looking a lot sharper.

First I've heard about Lake playing.

Roughy hitting form last week at Willi is timely. I think we need to find a way to stretch Carlton for height in defence without losing forward defensive pressure. This means rotating Hudson, Roughy and Barry so as never to have all three on the ground at the same time.

I like the fact that Barry and Roughy provide very different types of challenges for Henderson. It should prevent him from getting too comfortable.

If roughead comes in it could become a match up nightmare for carlton. Jones, Roughead, Barlow, Hall, Grant, all athletic talls.

If our midfield is on song we could give them a shake.

I'm predicting a high scoring game.

If it's a high scoring game, it means our game plan isn't working and we'll get destroyed, hence only one team will score heavily...

The defenceless Carlton you may have known a few years back is dead... if we're winning it out of the middle, it will mean we get it into our forward 50 and employ the press... if you win it out of the middle, we will not have a chance to set the press, and hence you are a big chance of winning...

It's not gonna be a shootout style we used to have...

Did anyone see Matthew Lloyds top 10 midfielders on the Game Plan.

If i remember correctly he had Mitch Robinson at 5. Better than Ward, Kreuzer, Simpson, Cooney. Only Griff and Boyd above him.

Seriously, Robinson does some great things and a player that every team needs. But come on

His last 2 months have been pretty exceptional, I'd have him ahead of Kreuz and Simpson at this point in time, won't comment on the Dogs players.

If he's basing this purely on recent form, he probably isn't far wrong. He isn't saying Robinson's the most talented out of the group.
