Carlton Offer O'Keefe 1.5 Millon

Melbourne had a number of players on their list whose value increased due to finals participation in previous years eg Neitz, Robertson, Holland, Bruce, Green, White etc. Keeping these guys & others, happy would have consumed a good 'chunk' of their salary cap.

What a load of rubbish - thats like an across the board average of over $200k per player looking at it simplisticly. The fact that they are paying 100% of their $8.5m cap is testament to Melbourne being very poorly managed and there are obviously a number of player riding the gravy train.

Take into account they have a list of 39 with 2 rookies. The two rookies will be on or near the base salary of $30k with only half of that being under the cap. First round draftees are on a set base ~$50k plus match payments - less for non first round draftees. ~6 dratees: nett effect on the cap - neglible (probably in total $400k)

And lastly we have Nietz, Yze and White on the veterans list, so only half of their salary is counted. Even if they are on $500k each  thats still a grand total of $750k.

That leaves an awful lot of "middle rung" players earning an average of $240k ea a year. If they paid the minimum, the average would still be a shade over $200k. Still too much IMO, but they don't need to be paying diamond prices for a team of cubic zirconias.......

Don't be silly. Carlton doesn't have a salary cap. Never has.

They just pay their players as much as they can afford - sometimes more - then worry about the consequences a few years later of cheating their way to Premierships. They then get slapped on the wrist with a fine the AFL end up paying for anyway, plus a couple of draft penalities, which simply means its time to tank again, get all the top draft and concession picks, splurge again with massive amounts of $$$ to buy whatever they need - and the whole process starts over again.

Nothing new here.

We cant all pay our players in beer and car insurance Prof.

I concur.

Geelong have 9 ALL AUSTRALIANS and other stars. Win almost every game they play.

Carlton have 2 ALL AUSTRALIANS and a bunch of good young kids.

Its pretty simple how the Blues can afford Okeefe etc um we have room!

If Carlton were to get Okeefe, I would offer our pick 6 but would want to swap that with their 1st pick.

We should also offer a player like Thornton or a Fisher.

I would also do a straight swap - Waite for OKeefe

Yes but those 2 All-Australians you speak of get paid a shitload more than any Geelong player.

The salary cap has yet to reach $8.5 million (I think this year was something like $7.3 mil, or thereabouts) so you might need to revisit your calculations. The point I was making is that Melbourne's list contains a number of experienced players, most of whom had been part of the team when they were playing finals, therefore consuming a significant amount of the salary cap, even allowing for the 2 players that can be placed on the veterans' list. It is very easy to reach the upper limits of the salary cap when you have a number of players in the 25+ age group (12 on Melbourne's list).

Isn't the salary cap going up a couple of hundred grand every year? Surely then we can start to expect more million dollar contracts. In fact I'm predicting that by 2016 we'll have our first 2 million a year player.

I just laugh at all of this lunacy going on about Carlton and the salary cap. If any of you had even bothered looking at our list, you'd find that we have a heap of players that would be on "minimal" contracts.

couldn't agree more. :thumbsu:
why let the truth get in the way of some carlton bashing. A player wants to come to carlton so they MUST be over the salary cap. Very childish arguments by the other scum, but hey who cares.

Yeah ya get that when someone is dishonest.

What are you rabbiting on about firefly?

Let's talk about how your ex-coach feels about the 'honesty' of YOUR recently deposed President. Lets talk about your tanking to secure Roo AND Kosi in the same year. F@#k it, let's talk about the good old wife swapping culture at Moorabbin. Let's let it all hang out - HYPOCRITE!!;)

If Carlton are able to keep Fev, Okeefe, Judd, Warnock, and the two or three others that would be on decent money down there and can do it while under the cap then I can only applaud their list management.

The crunch will hit though when Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer etc improve and come to the table over the next couple of years wanting more dollars. You cant keep everyone happy.

It will be interesting to see how The Blues buy a gun to fill a hole strategy fairs against the grow your own list management styles being employed by Others. Am I right Carlton fans in saying that this has brought success to Carlton in the past but eventually bites you on the bum?

Which teams are employing the list management strategy & not recruiting players from other clubs to fill recognised gaps?

Well IF that's the route we decide to take i suppose time will tell. Certainly didn't harm the Swans or teams like the Roos of the 90's and their predecessors in the 70's.

Be interesting to see the way things would pan out down Punt rd way if you could attract any big name recruits to join the like of Brown, Simmonds, Johnson, Polak and Jordi. ;)

Wasn't meant as a crack.
In fact over on our board Ive been suggesting we should be in the hunt for a big name.

The usual argument is that Geelong built a list without buying any gun players in and that trading away early picks for supposed guns isn't the long term answer. The top sides at the moment (Geel/ Haw)have only picked up established players that haven't taken early picks or huge chunks of salary cap.

Doing it these days is far different to the 70's and even the 90's for that matter.

Brad Ottens.

Poor recruiting hurt us more than our trading for experienced players when we wasted alot of top 30 picks.
