Some reasonable contenders at 8 & 9, but am sure we would have to give something else back, as well as pick 1

If it was picks around 4 and say 10, then i would be interested in listening to the deal

Agree your getting closer, maybe say picks 3 and 5 could be a more reasonable value for this year’s 1st pick and a little something.
I don't think we appreciate the value of this year’s first pick yet, perhaps in another month or so it will be crystal clear.

Who are 8 & 9 against what we largely know as being Lukosius?
This is not a deep draft. Just a good one at the top end right now.

Normally I'd think take the 8 & 9. Not so sure right now. Wouldn't sign off on it just yet.

My point is take mids mids mids

Needn't be the best draft ever. Fact is nearly all drafts there's good mid prospects in the teens and twenties and even in the 30s

Look at Fisher

8,9,24,26 gives us a massive net to cast for mids

I'll be surprised if the pundits don't think there will be very good midfield prospects at 8-10

And BTW, just on Lukiscuous, I am a huge fan but I have one query - is he though? Toughness is important to me. Esp these days, as the Dom said recently the game is more brutal now than ever before for kids, that's one reason we are struggling. The kids get injured due to the demands of the game.

I don't want a skilful but weak player. I want toughness.

Look at JW and his struggles with injury and the sheer brutality of the game.

Look at Boyd and Moore etc who struggle.

If the experts tell me Luko is tough as nails then that's good but if not I don't want him.

Either way I'm still hugely tempted by 8,9 in theory.

Luko would have to be a dead set star in all facets to pass in two top ten picks.

If we finish last, we still won’t be drafting Luko, GC will be given an unprecedented start of 1st round compensation for Lynch leaving.

The GC are struggling big time and it’s a way the AFL can ensure they get the best replacement.

I have no doubt this will happen.

As it stands, If BSOS didn't have his surname I don't think he'd be in national draft contention. A rookie pick in my eyes at the moment.

Draft picks aren’t the answer, Healy/Robinson/Brown are driving me batty with their short sighted thinking. They need mature, well travelled and credentialed free agents to lead them the way.

It’s the salary cap rules and regulations that need changing, GC along with Carlton should not be paying more than 80% of the cap but they’re forced to pay 95%...rules should be changed to pay an “average” of 95% on a rolling 4 year cycle to enable clubs at the bottom to bank enormous sums of cash and blow away other clubs at the top with massive deals and enable the shit clubs to keep their draft picks and get elite talent in on top. You can front end the bageezus out of those contracts so as not to stuff the structure moving forward which is high on fFA and managers thoughts.

That was how free agency was meant to work, but they’re all going to clubs at the pointy end.

That’s exactly where the answers lie, not giving clubs further draft assistance which clubs are very reticent to trade.

Unprecedented? We got Kreuzer at no.1 when Richmond finished last in 2007.

Yep, we want to follow the Americans but we don’t have the balls to do it properly. Bottom teams have only marginally more cap space to pay free agents so of course the talent heads to the top clubs.

Like Norf offering unprecedented amounts for both Martin and Kelly? Players still want success, most aren't GAJ

Feel as though I'm arguing against myself here, as in principle I agree with taking mids, but who are the mids going to be and do we go all out for 18 yo mids or do we recruit these mids via FA & Trade?

The best mids will not be there at the 8 & 9, so which ones are going to make the difference?
OK, that's a bit early to call, but using last years draft: Which 2 mids at picks 8 and after would you sooner than Lukosius?

Not saying it works that way from one year to the next, but you get the idea.

Let's have a look at the mids for the sake of it.
I welcome anyone who has seen these guys to add their views, as mine is not worthy, but just to get the ball rolling against the limited viewing I've had.

1. Sam Walsh
2. Bailey Smith
3. Collier-Dawkins
4. Chayce Joyce
5. Izak Rankine
6. Luke Valente
7. Jackson Hately
8. Jack Bytel
9. Connor Rozee
10. Luke English

11. Anyone else you want to drop in.

Chances are that at least three of those guys will be gone. Maybe more.
Let's use Knightmares current power rating and knock out the players at 7 and under: Gone are Walsh, Smith, Hately and Rankine.

Would anyone sooner any of 2 of the mids leftover ahead of Lukosius?
Maybe some would take a tall and a mid, but we are talking about taking mids here.....so which two?

This is somewhat silly doing it now, but just for the fun of it.

I would only trade pick 1 if we were getting a top 5 pick and a pick between 10-15. In our position we need to continue to get the cream of the crop into the club. But even then I'd be concerned and worried that it was a mistake.

Agree, to give up pick 1, Lukosius, l would want to be able to take one of top 3 midfielders in draft with a top 5 pick(Lukosius and king brothers are a good chance to go top 5).

Then another pick in top 10.

I would still be surprised if sos gave up pick 1 for the above.

Think everyone still thinking we will have pick one is losing touch with reality.
Our draw in last 11 rounds is far easier than first 11 games, plus we should be expecting we field better teams in that time. We will probably end up 3rd or 4th last.

Therefore should be thinking pick 3 or 4 and what available then.

Cool, operation tankin for Rankine back on!

The other question is how many Academy or father sons are going to be taken in the top 10 that could push these picks of 8 & 9 out to pick 11 & 12 best kids in the draft. I personally think the only way of trading pick 1 is to get a ready made star or pick that will get you either Sam Walsh or Bailey Smith.

I really disagree. There will be players who would take the cash, there comes a point where it is simply too good to refuse. If North had an extra $500K p.a. to pay dusty things might have been different, if not him then someone else. Money talks, but at the moment it is not a free market where bottom clubs are forced to overpay players. Look at what we have done, taking Lobbe off ports books to get to the minimum 95% cap, it's complete bullshit that we are forced to pay close to the same player payments as the top clubs.
