Tried last night, I didn't make it past hearing Bunting did a welding course and he tortured a dog that was annoying him with the torch to putting a hole right through it. I nearly threw up. WTF is wrong with people that he wasn't pulled up long before he started putting them in barrells?
That whole one was ****ed up... just how all these sub-humans came together and no-one ever spoke out.

Just listened to Elodie Morel. Worth a listen, amazing story. The reaction of the two women after the police arrive was amazing and the coincidence with the road block incredible.
Listened to this one this morning. I'm amazed the informant wasn't convicted. If he'd have given them a name straight away (and the right car description), she may have lived.

Listened to the Wilhelmina Kruger & Anna Dowlingkoa pod this morning.

Unbelievably gruesome murders. The fact a lot of it was done after death is just further disturbing.

There's a few things that intrigued me - the police losing the lock of hair from the crime scene. I don't know what the technology was like back then but that was a vital bit of evidence. I've also got no doubt the bomb hoax and the 'anonymous' tip was the killer.

It's amazing to think the person was never caught. I'm a bit surprised the killings didn't continue to happen. Why would they stop at 2? They were getting away with it...

Also, I can't believe how many witnesses they had at 3am in the morning. There was so many people that offered information to the police that were there through the night.

Gone back to listen to a few more of these that I never got to.

Listened to Mr Cruel this morning. That one was absolutely bizarre. What caused him to just stop doing it? The only think I can think of is that he murdered the last little girl and that scared him. But if he was ok with kidnapping/raping children, that seems incredibly unlikely.

Many, many theories out there. I was a kid at the time and remember Karmein Chan well, was scary stuff.

People were making links with this and Bung Siriboon but I think it's been ruled out.

Have you got a theory yourself? It's one of the more bizarre cases I can think of.

Yeah I read something today that ruled Bung Siriboon out I think.

The prevailing ones are:
He's dead
He's in jail on a different charge
He was spooked into stopping after Karmein was killed. (Theory is she saw his face)
He stopped because the cops know who he is but they have no evidence because he was so meticulous.

As hard as it is to believe he'd just stop if he's known to police (they can't monitor him 24/7) I'm leaning towards this one for a few reasons...

He's not a natural killer... the murder was out of necessity (In his mind) and he was known to be gentle towards his victims. Taking a long time to clean and groom and release them. He also wasn't an opportunist. He planned and staked out victims before hand. All this takes time. Which if he's known, he doesn't really have. If a child goes missing he'd be a point of call for police. He would want to take his time to eradicate any evidence, but he probably knows he won't be afforded that time.

Cruel's language for the 90s was a bit old fashioned, he called the girls 'missy' iirc and there were other indications that made me think he was likely in his 40s. Maybe he had a daughter that had grown up and left home, as a stressor. I think you're right, he killed Karmein out of necessity because she could have identified him and it scared him.

Also possible the police were getting close, I know of someone who was interviewed for the abductions/murder and he committed suicide on Christmas Day not that long after. He could be dead. No idea if it was him or not but that he was a suspect is solid.

Police interviewed a heap of suspects, some very thoroughly.

Remember the head detective saying he thought they had him - they interviewed him for 14 hours - but let him go when he demanded to be either charged or released.

The cop believes it was him and they scared him into stopping.

Brian Elkner was (and apparently still is) the prime suspect - assume it was him he was referring to.

Personally I think the murder of Chan made him stop - that was never his MO and things went too far.

It could be a combination of both of course.

Hi. Was this Brian Elkner a criminal or someone who associated in circles where he could easily access handguns?

Hi. Was this Brian Elkner a criminal or someone who associated in circles where he could easily access handguns?

Doubtful on the handguns. He’s a convicted sex offender, he attacked a string of girls in the early 1970s, breaking into their homes and assaulting them. He was jailed for 10 years and released in the early 1980s before the Mr Cruel attacks began.

He was an academic and lecturer at Melbourne University, and later ran his own construction design business.

Police interviewed him at length and searched his home. They found a balaclava and knife hidden in the roof.

In his late 70s now. Lived / lives in Thornbury. He fits the profile of highly intelligent.

He’s admitted police told him he’s the prime suspect but denies he’d had anything to do with it, saying he rebuilt his life after prison and hasn’t been charged with any crimes since the 1970s.

He is also somewhat shorter than witnesses reported Mr Cruel to be.

There’s a decent circumstantial case but as is ever the case here, no hard evidence.

It supports the theory that police have interviewed Mr Cruel (be it Elkner or another suspect), and scared him into stopping after telling them they were a suspect. It’s therefore likely he believed he was under covert surveillance.

Listened to the Sherri Rasmussen one yesterday.

Thought that was one of the more interesting ones I've listened to. Incredible to think someone is capable of doing that but then just continuing to live life like it never happened. It's not like she got the urge to do it again or anything. Completely bizarre.

Happens far more than anyone would like to imagine

I thought that is the 'best' one and the one I recommend to people who have never listened before.

I think about the poor family begging the cops to investigate the ex girlfriend and being told they watch too many movies .....

Listened to 'The Lady in the Barrel' this morning.

Even though it was 1878, it's incredible the police didn't follow up the lead that led to the killer. Thank goodness the Medical Examiner did.
Listened to that the other day, didn't enjoy it as much as most others. Saying it was 'inspired by the new series' made me think it was part of some sponsorship deal.

Yeah seemed a bit odd. Presumably that was one of the older cases he's done. Was a pretty short podcast actually, think it only made it to 40 mins.

Listened to Graham Thorne yesterday. So sad. Can remember hearing about it as a kid in Sydney in the 1970s. Amazing that full names and addresses were published for lottery winners until then.
