And moreover just no need. He coached well, they played as well as they could and went down by a kick. An easy gracious position to take. Real amateur stuff. Showed his inexperience.
Yep - completely agree. Hopefully a learning curve for him in his development as a coach. He's clearly doing a lot right, but he has to understand what he says and does has an impact, and it will be heavily scrutinised. He's a role model and leader for the biggest club in the AFL. He needs to understand how his actions can be perceived and can potentially have a negative impact.

We had a great turnout of supporters yesterday but were probably still outnumbered 65/35. I have no doubt that this has an impact on the game and players and said this during the week. It’s a real sign of resolve and maturity that we were able to get it done particularly as the crowd was going bananas when JDG put them two goals up early in the last.

The good news - our fans will outnumber oppo fans regardless of who we play in the prelim.

Highly doubt that last sentence. If we get Melb in a prelim they’ll well and truly outnumber us.

1. Role players are worth gold

Tom Atkins would be paid $300,000 (guessing) and Jordan De Goey is chasing a new deal worth close to $900,000, yet these two players supply for their team what many can’t – at far different prices. De Goey is the game-changer with his skill, and when he kicked the go-ahead goal late in the final quarter, in that moment he had all of Collingwood in the palm of his hand. He probably still does, and a contract offer will be in his hands as soon as the season is over. Atkins is a different beast. He shapes the game by sheer will. It was a bruising game and you will need to watch it again to fully appreciate the contest and the grunt work which Atkins supplies. His contribution to the game was equal to that of De Goey, so why wouldn’t he also get a pay rise? He’s contracted until the end of 2023, although it wouldn’t surprise if the Cats rolled his contract over to reward him for a remarkable second half this season.

The thing with the clearances for Atkins V De Goey was some of De Goeys came from getting the ball when it spilled out, Atkins got a few in the last where he contested the ball, got it out and cleared it himself. His clearances late were more valuable because he didn't have to rely on the luck of the ball spilling out or someone else getting it to him.

He played very well. Think cameron was our best foward though.
He probably was, but think Rohan could've taken that boundary kick (probably would've missed), and had he not dropped that chest mark in the pocket to setup the winner, who knows, could've ended with 5 majors. But yeah, Cameron kept us in the game earlier. Rohan was mainly the match winner in the end.

Amazes me in a billion dollar game the review system cameras are basically potatoes…
They should put cameras in the ground at the base of the posts looking upwards, then they can see the ball as it crosses the line... needs a sapphire lens, so it doesn't break when people walk over it... but it might be a safety risk if someone gets dumped on it head first, but that's probably unlikely if its right next to the post, with the camera lens only 10cm or less width anyway (like a microcamera)

Alternatively, they hang a wire about +15m above the goal posts with cameras aimed downwards, or the max permitted from the stadium roof line. Never seen a player hit the roof at Docklands, so they can put them on the ceiling directly aimed at the goals from above it. That would capture all the football angles as it passes the goal line.

i do think the crowd and hostility played into collingwoods hands. they are simply used to it while we are not. That atmosphere and intensity was off the charts and would only favour them.

the grand final is much more commercialised and ticketing is alot more micro managed so will be alot more tame if we get them again, while we have also had the benefit of some exposure which will help us.
I actually think the Pies have played into it all and use it as well, McCraes comments at first struck me as being odd about we are not losers, I think it's as much a mindset thing for them.
Hear me out, McCrae is also from that Lions team that was super intimidating, I noticed on the replay that the Pie players are really chirpy, really really happy to gob off, get in the face of players etc.. And it's largely their no names. It's all deliberate, he's created this attitude that also leans into their huge crowds that they can control that and be an intimidating team to play, mental disintegration if you will. We are winners is drummed into them, they get in the face of a player that pushes back or stuffs up, they egg on the crowd and feed off it... The Brisbane players (our own coach very much a part of it) would physically belt up opposition and have them doubting themselves. If you remember the Cats players saying how they would get bashed by them in the early days... This Pies team mentally beat you, they don't ease up, the crowd doesn't ease up and they have had far too many teams shit the bed late against them for it to be a coincidence. What was the game they dropped again? The Swans in Sydney where the crowd was against them....

Maybe I'm over reading it, or seeing something that is not there... But I find McCrae quite genuine... He's not being a sook, he's trying to fuel and stoke up that us against them attitude.

I think it's really good coaching to be honest from a psychological point of view, and it goes well with his obvious coaching game plan and structure chops IMO

Agreed. Especially so on a Fri night.

I was at Demons v Swans on Friday night, was pretty close to a 50/50 crowd split. Would be pretty disappointed if we couldn’t get more supporters there than them (or at least equal) for a ‘home’ prelim.

Stoked to grind out the win. A very gutsy performance. 3 things that need attention:

- Henry; much better back than forward. Kolodjashnij out, Parfitt in, Henry back.

- Blicavs; perennial finals under-performer. “Deer in the headlights” is the only way to describe it.

- Stanley; sick of the Jekyll and Hyde act.

Blicavs and Stanley worry me the most. Both will be playing in the prelim (against Gawn and Jackson), and neither can be trusted.

Agreed I thought the showing by Dees fans was pretty poor.

But we know alot of Geelong fans don't travel on a Fri.

Rewatching the game -

Blitz - Was fumbly but got himself into several aerial contests that looked like certain Pie wins. Failing to grab that handball from Guthrie was awful, was still running at full steam compared to the Pies though.
Stanley - Certainly had his Vertigo issues, missed several ruck contests by a mile. Seemed on 2nd watch he was pacing himself based off Cox/Cameron who weren't running hard so he didn't run hard. Makes him look worse when Pies are streaming past and his most valuable asset is his ability to contest. Not sure I'd drop him on rewatch but wouldn't want him running at that pace again.
Holmes - Last quarter champion, run run run run run run run, always an outlet and always free. Fantastic, without players like him you don't win finals.
Miers and Close - Same run but not as effective. Invaluable last quarter players and you'd assume someone as smooth as close wouldn't have the same bad disposals twice.

You'd back us to win most last quarters with how much run we have. Just need to be sharper and take the game on earlier as that first quarter we really didn't want to make a play. 2nd quarter we dominated a good chunk of it and same for the last. 3rd was even.

I think he is a fantastic coach, his game plan is elite and he gets maximal effort out of his players similar to Scott.

I think you clicked the wrong comment to reply to?? Are you referencing my comment about him having a sulk about the umpires? Because I agree with everything you said, but the comment about him being a sook about the umpiring is different

Surely for instances like this, which rarely happen but still can, you just put a camera in the top of the post looking straight up. In this case, the ball goes clearly over the camera. If it doesn't, you don't see it. Use the shitty cameras they currently have for that, and spend the money updating goal line cameras.

Not sure if anyone else has said this but there is a lot of upside coming out of yesterday’s game. We won and yet so many players were down or below average - Stanley, Miers, Hawkins (IMO), Henry, and even Blicavs
It has in that respect an 07 prelim final feel to it. Something just feels better about this spring time in the air at the moment

No just because you mentioned the hostility of the crowd and I was agreeing

Being 100% serious.

This was because early in the game I think Elliott kicked it directly to the boundary when tackled and under a pack in the 1st quarter, and it was correctly called a free kick (ya know, because he kicked it sideways directly to the boundary line and not towards the goal).

When I saw Rohans miss and the ferals boo, I knew it was because of that.

Oh good lord your actually not joking. Has all of this hysteria come about because the AFL stopped paying ducking free kicks to ginnivan??

They're in the belief that they have their own set of rules. Ginnivan is allowed to duck and dive but you can't boo him. But you can boo Selwood and Danger (why Danger???) and even Goodes!

Anybody else watched the 4th qtr a few times?

It gets better each time you watch it 😃
I've watched the Rohan mark and goal about 5000 times
