Back to the thread. Its either Eagles or Sydney really. He isnt giving up 5+ mill cos he likes Caleb Serong. Freo simply wont even get in the same ball park as our financial offer
That 1st year will be $2m.
End of the day all those players traded in or as free agents plus all those academy kids need to get what they are worth.
And the Eagles have a mountain of cap space to front load and beat any offer the Swans or Freo can put up.
It's how the salary cap works.
End of the day it's his choice to move or stay in any case. And it sounds like he and his partner are looking to move back to WA. If the Swans had of won the flag it may well have happened last trade period.

Literally every single AFL fan whose ever supported a club does this. Not too sure why people call it such a gotcha moment.
In reality when it comes to Eagles/Freo the truth is always the middle ground.
Ginbey wont win a Brownlow but he will play 300+ games at a very high level which is a very good result for us. Pretending it isnt because he wont win a Brownlow Medal like Ben Cousins is a absurd take

I agree that West Coast will be able to offer more money than either Sydney or Fremantle for Chad Warner, I think that's beyond doubt - but the same was true for North when they were trying to buy everyone and nobody was interested.
There are some intangibles to it, but I do think commercially it will be better for Warner to go to West Coast. He'd win a brownlow medal there.

Every fan overrates their young players for sure.
You realize only one player played more than 300 games in West Coast history?

If West Coast have a semi-reasonable year, then I could see Warner going there. If they are bottom 3 again, then it might be a tough sell.

Yep. Ginbey would be the only player who I think could do it from recent times just because he is strong and versatile.
That's why they got Baker, Graham and Owies.
Three Big Factors to weigh in on the decision.
Money - WC
Location - WC & Freo
Competitive team in the near term - Sydney & Freo
If he wants Sydney he’ll be signing before Finals in 2025.

I think it is actually a mistake West Coast going for Warner (and I think it is greater than an even chance that is where he goes). He is going to cost more in resources than he is worth to their list imv. The net result for the outlay of 3 top five picks could end up just being one teen pick and Warner and Baker. They'll be relying on luck* to be filling most of the positions 8 to 18 in the 22 with better than average talent by the end of the rebuild.
It's half like they're doing it just because it doesn't seem right we should get him.
*For clarity by this I mean they will relying on above median results across the draft hand they have across 2024 to 2026. Or less than notionally 50 / 50 things like the Hawks imploding in 2025.

Warner won't cost two top 5 picks without something going back to the Eagles.
Most premiership teams have 4 to 6 guns surrounded by decent role players.
Warner is 1.
Harley 2.
Waterman 3.
A fit Oscar Allen 4.
Need to develop or find 2 or 3 more guns over the next 3 to 4 drafts or trade periods.
High hopes for Hough, Hewett and Ginbey.
Try 8-10 genuine guns. Look at Brisbane’s team and tell me they have less than 10. Not all in their prime but still a ripper team. Even WC’s 2018 team has about 8 and you were missing 2 on the day.
Waterman & Allen haven’t really stamped themselves as permanent guns yet. Their bodies have had issues and plenty of older players have had one good season and not being able to back it up.
You need a far bit more than just Warner & your current list.
Warner wont fetch 2 top 5 picks, that would ACTUALLY be burn down MRP areas. Far worse trade than anything we did this year.
1 top 5 pick and a late teens pick is probably fair.
Id much rather we didnt chase him and just drafted kids though tbh

Warner won't go because of cash. Swans made room for Buddy they'll make space for Warner.
Youre over-rating a lot of players.
Its roughly 6 genuine A-graders/AA contenders for a grand final winning team. Role players playing out of their skin, former(old) A-graders, and kids who piggy back off the stars to have an easier time doing their jobs are not in this category.
I can find 6 Lions players who played in the grand final who id consider in that area, and thats begrudgingly including Mcluggage who is arguably just below the real A-graders

West Coast fans are overestimating the gap btwn what they'll offer and what Sydney/Freo will. I can see West Coast's offer being 10-20% higher than Freo's/Sydney's, and that could be enough to be decisive. But some West Coast fans are peddling the idea that they're gonna damn near double everyone else's offer, which is nonsense.
For one thing as you said, for a player of that quality you make the room. But for another, teams don't make offers that are just completely out of whack with market value just because they can afford it for that 1 player. Sure if West Coast offer 2 mil+ per season it might be "too good to pass up" money. But it'd also be "too high not to obliterate your pay standards" money. Suddenly every West Coast player who's remotely good has their manager up their demands coz they're comparing their output to Chad's and want their pay to be proportionate. Lord knows what Harley alone would demand on his next deal.
