went woke, went broke...well almost. But is life is a meme of what happens when you believe what you read and then project that same nonsense thinking people actually care. Im sure danny butcher was a great bloke as well but all people care about is how well you play and how many goals you kick. They will tell you till they are blue in the face how good you are and how much you mean to them until you no longer gratify them through sport. Its all a bit sick really but thats what he signed up for "you get what you deserve"
What does this even mean

I'm just grateful that we saw the best of him at Port. Those first few years, there were so many Chad moments, amazing for such a young player so early in their career. Those last few minutes of THAT Showdown will still be getting replayed years from now.
There have been so many different versions of the circumstances surrounding his leaving Port, either blaming Chad or the club. I'd rather just remember the joy and excitement we had getting to watch him play for us.

That was straight after Hodge’s attempted murder of him too.

Something went wrong.. was it his body/mind or Hinkley... No idea.. but *** he was great early in his career.

*Would love to blame Hinkley 😈 but I have no idea.
He didnt really shine at Hawthorn like he did with us, so I'm thinking it was a thing within himself. Self motivation?
My daughter played State Basketball, played in the Melbourne Classics.....won many MVPs as a teenager. Then just dropped her bundle, didnt want a bar of it. I can understand Chads journey.

Whether it was Chad himself or the team or the coaching staff's fault or whatever, he is definitely the biggest disappointment that we didn't maximise his talent given a couple of AA's in the first four years of his AFL career at Port Adelaide.

The only two that come to mind is Bowen Lockwood which is injury related and Shaun Burgoyne playing all of those games for Hawthorn and helping them win flags for them. Maybe you could throw in Stewie Dew. Matthew Primus and Josh Francou with injury which is a bit different. Having Tom Harley on the initial squad and giving him away to Geelong. Personally I always thought Nathan Krakouer had a lot of talent that he didn't fulfill.

But overall, Wingard is the one that got away.

Some say he never maximised his potential.

He reached his maximum potential - he just didn't stay at the peak of the summit for long enough.

DOB 29/07/1993 drafted November 2011, 2 All Oz selections by 22 years of age.

2012 debut season 9 goals from 19 games B&F, 13th
2013 43 goals from 24 games - All Oz in 2nd year, B&F Win
2014 43 goals from 24 games - stiff to miss out All Oz but Vics could only have 2 Port players Gray, Boak. Hayden Ballantyne and his 49 goals from 20 games got the gig because they put Robbie at HF not in the guts. B&F, 9th
2015 53 goals from 22 games - All Oz in 4th year, 2nd all Oz at 22 years of age. B&F 2nd to Robbie

Edit I forgot to put up Simon Black, he only had 3 All Oz but he had a shit load of medals by the time he was 23 or 24.

by the end of 2003 at age 24, Black had 3 premiership medals, 2 Brisbane B&F medals, 2 All Oz selections, a Brownlow medal, and a Norm Smith medal - had he hit his peak by 24 and maximised his potential??

Post 2003, he wins an All Oz in 2004 and 3rd B&F in 2006.

Thanks for the memories Chad.

One of the purest footballers I've seen. Sweet left foot, fantastic step, great vision and a fantastic mark for a lil fella.

Pity you left, pity your body didnt stand up.

All the best in whatever your future holds.

Bring on the Chad Wingard extended highlights on DVD…

AND RELEASE IT ON 4K BLUERAY…..

Not bad for a bloke that preferred basketball.

One the best limited AFL careers ever…

Chad's sudden decline is definitely not all on him, the kind of player he was was fundamentally changed and that was a football department decision.

Bit disappointing to read so many people saying he didn't didn't have the drive for it.

Watch his pre 2017 football. He cared. He cared a lot.

I will forever have a soft spot for Chad Wingard for what he represented to the fans and the football club. He, alongside Butcher, epitomised optimism and hope for the PAFC when we were at our lowest ebb. That 2013 season where his rise to prominence coincided with our return to AFL relevance will always be a time in my football supporting journey that I look back on fondly. Goodnight, sweet prince.

It was an amazing time.
