His body let him down, end of story.

Before we drafted Butters, Rozee and these types he was the major shining light and one of the reasons you showed up to the footy.

The most naturally gifted, freakish player ive seen and he had a goal sense like no other really, he just knew where they were. Kicked over 50 goals in a season whilst averaging 20 disposals, not many have ever done that. At his peak he was nothing short of amazing. Sublime talent.

When Chad was on he was a match winner and good for 20 possies and 2.5 goals a game but I still would've taken for the occasional match winner and 18 and 1.5 goals a game for the rest of his career.

I mean that match winning ability is crucial for finals.

I think I'm going to listen to Pipers at the Gates of Dawn.

Knowing we had the team to take it right up to that Hawks side and beat them on their day is flipping annoying to think of.

I still believe we pandered to him too much. Allowed him his own pregame warm up routine. Gave him a basketball ring to shoot pre game etc etc

We aided his ego go unchecked.

Chad was a very good player for us. At Port he was twice All Australian and a goal kicking small forward. In four seasons between 2013 and 2016 Chad booted 177 goals for us and I would take that any day from any one of our current plethora of small forwards.

Somehow Chad seemed to loose his way and fell out of favour in 2018. As some have suggested it was probably a personality thing. These days 31 is a tad young to give it away but obviously the body is not up to it.

Thanks for the good times Chad.

At the end of the day history will show we got out at the right time with him. I and many others expected him to go to Hawthorn, get back to his best and dominate but he never got close except for some token games at the end of each season.

Whether we thought he had peaked, or whether he was too much to handle around the club, in the end, it was the right call.

If that’s your best explanation then I am concerned for you

At the time I had some insider intel on how Port were struggling with Chad. It had been going on for some time prior to it blowing up. As Macca said, sometimes it just doesnt work, no matter who is at the helm. He had so much damned natural talent, in the end it was the right thing for both parties to part ways. Still hurts tho!

Now, I just want to celebrate the joy he gave us in his best years, at a time we needed it most!

If only Wingard had the professionalism of someone like a Boak and looked to actively try to get the best out of himself during the off-season, he wouldn’t have been made to leave Port and could have easily been an all time great and still be playing.

It was well documented that he doesn’t live and breathe football and in fact, doesn’t enjoy watching the game as much and views his career as a job first and foremost, but at the end of the day, talent can only get you so far and he didn’t seem to make as much of an effort to get the best out of himself.

I was so gutted when he requested a trade to Hawthorn but looking back at it now, it was the right choice. I only wish that we demand the hawks to cough up more for him since Burton hasn’t progressed as much as I thought he would and Duursma is now at the bombers after a few difficult seasons at Port.

Depends on which twist you apply to your logic. Replace Duursma with Wingard in the 2020 PF and we probably win it. Chad definitely wouldn’t have fumbled that chest mark.
