“It is great for the public here at Sunderland to see us,” said manager Brendan Rodgers. “They must have been wondering what this team everyone is talking about are all about and now they have seen. We were wonderful.

After a 2-0 loss to Sunderland :D

Salty about what? I was making the point that all managers say it and that Rodgers' problem is that he would say it at the wrong times.

I even said in my post that Klopp uses the term as well. No need to get your back up.
So why bring it up at all? Everyone knows he's has the piss taken out of him because he said it at the wrong times...

Well everyone doesn't know because someone specifically asked in this thread which is what I was responding to and a video of Rodgers simply saying "we showed great character" means nothing without context as it's something that nearly every manager says after a win (e.g. Pochettino and Klopp).

Yes, I asked. Twice, because the super-cut didn't reveal why BR saying it was a big deal, although the word did make his Nthn Ireland accent stand out.

It was mid-way through their first season back in the PL. They'd been unbeaten for 4 games and had beaten Arsenal 3-2 the week before and drew with Chelsea 1-1 the week after. Many people were taking notice of their good play and they were considered wasteful in the game.

Man City also lost at Sunderland that year. 1-0. And the year prior. So they weren't easy-beats.

As Soza mentioned, Rodgers had a habit of saying the phrase after poor losses and/or performances that didn't show 'great character', particularly towards the end of his reign at Liverpool. That's why he had the piss taken out of him

Fair enough. Certain posters do get my back up, with Spurs you and Latro are two that do.

Ha ha, you are the first person I've ever seen trying to justify that quote. Kudos.

We all know about Celtic, but there was something interesting about the Salzburg game... first of all, can anyone tell me the differances between these shirts?

A0wQDEZ.jpg

The answer is the left one belongs to Salzburg, and the right one Leipzig. Why do I ask? Because one of the players for Salzburg was actually wearing a Leipzig shirt, and this wasn't discovered until the end of the game. This mistake could potentially cost Salzburg their UFEA license, and could result in their disqualification for the tournament. Fancy that the parent company can't even tell the difference between their own teams.

The English-Welsh hybrid TNS also manged a draw against the more fancied APOEL as well.

The rest went the same way you expected them to.

How was there only one shirt that sneaked through out of the whole teams? Seems weird haha.

Looking closely at it, it is possible that a mix up could occur. I just also learnt that UEFA doesn't allow company sponorship in the CL, which means they had to remove the Redbull and the yellow circle.

So here's what the shirts actually looked like:

You can see it says Salzburg there.

And here's Ulmer's shirt:

Here's the crests for a comparison:

Fun fact. TNS played in the first competitive fixture at our stadium.

Not sure how they got around UEFA's rules though, IIRC they used to be Llantsenfraid FC or something like that, but changed to TNS Llantsenfraid after being bought by Total Network Solutions.

The 2nd legs of all games have now officially been completed, here are the winners.

Alas, it wasn't meant to be for Lincoln, as Celtic bounced back and gained some redemption back. The Crusaders got crushed horribly by FC Copenhagan. Olimpika Ljubljana and Trencin had an epic match, then again, do you expect any less from the Slovenia v Slovakia games? TNS couldn't get it done against APOEL. The most suprisring result is probably the Tirana game (seriously, Finnish football lags way behind the order Nordics).

Now, we're now up to the Third Qualifying Round. For any contenders of the Europa League, pay attention! Any losers here will be coming your way!

This is the first round that has the 'Champions Route' and the 'League Route.' Contrary to their names, the Champions Route is far easier than the League Route. You only have to look at the fixtures to see why. The winners will get a chance to take on a crack against Villareal, Gladbatch, Porto, Roma, and of course, that blue from Manchester.

Also just a reminder: When you talk about the Big 5, it's Portugal. Not France. Do you see any Portugal teams in this round? I didn't think so. Even in a historical context, Portugal > France. If I see anyone call the Big 5 and mean France and not Portugal, then you should tear up your fan card and just leave. Shame on you for making such a rookie mistake, you big club bother.

If you want to refer to France along with the others, it's Big 6. If you can't be bothered with them and Portugal, just Big 4.

Fenerbahce v Monaco is the obvious stand out here, while I will give my points to Rosenborg v APOEL as the star match of the Champions Route. You know you're getting close when you can see Ajax and Monaco!

Ajax/PAOK would be interesting I would have thought.

They are, just not as much as Monaco v Fenerbache. New boys Rostov will be interesting to see, they were the most like us last season, just narrowly falling short of the title.

You would be correct about that, but I think it was around the time where it wasn't such a big deal. I think they had only 5 years of Euro football, and if I recall correctly, a few of the Welsh clubs were named after the sponsor.

Then again, I do wonder what the ruling is, because Bayer are A-OK, and their company logo is their football logo. Granted, they have a grandfather clause, but that really only applies to Germany. Unless I've missed something about them using an alternate crest, then they're OK. Then again, they are listed under the Bayer name for UEFA. Salzburg on the other hand is named FC Salzberg by UEFA.

1-1 now........great character

Need a future City leg end to pull them out of it.

Actually quite intrigued to see how Roberts will go in England, looked well short of it in the pre-season last year but the loan spell has done wonders for him.
