Should’ve rioli played this weekend? It’s been bugging me and i’ve got insensitive views on it, but I feel like he should’ve been playing.

Feel like we got it all wrong at selection. And it was obvious on Thursday but did the rot start earlier.

We need to start getting serious because this whole week reeked of complacency.

He should, but he couldn’t. So, he didn’t.

It happens.

Well the club is very sensitive and responsive to players personal situations so we didn’t have much choice but to leave him out.

Out: Mead, Jonas, Burgoyne, Byrne-Jones, Lord (Pending Fitness: Butters)
In: Horne-Francis, Burton, Bonner, Rioli, Dixon (Pending Fitness: Narkle, Lord, Jackson)

Outs

Mead is a SANFL player and should never be seen again. Only can work in SANFL conditions at SANFL speed. Can't believe he is contracted for next year... the second worst contract we have outside the Clurey one.

Jonas is cooked and should step down for the remainder of the season. Made about 5 comical errors that gifted the opposition easy goals. Actively made others around him worse. Lead the younger players in the SANFL, that is your role now.

Burgoyne has abysmal foot skills for an outside player. Zero depth or penetration in his kicking and whiffs easy kicks. Yeah he is reasonable at ground level but its completely irrelevant if you can't kick as a winger. Also let his opponent out the back way too often. Either get it right or leave. Don't want to see him at AFL level again this year.

Byrne-Jones injured.

Lord was good outside of kicking and if he stays in then that is fair, but makes way for Dixon if he can move.

Jones, Finlayson and Bergman were just about worst on ground but have some credits in the bank from past performances. Although I don't want to see any of the shit they served up again or they are gone. If Jones plays like this again then Hill and Elliot will combine for 12 goals.

Ins

JHF if he is fit.

An out of form Burton is still better than Mead, Jonas and Burgoyne and should never have been dropped in the first place. Just ridiculous hubris from a coaching group who clearly are drinking their own bathwater. Don't drop him again ffs.

Same goes for Bonner. Yeah he is a middling AFL player, but a middling AFL player is still better than a SANFL player with zero scope for improvement.

Rioli automatic.

Dixon if he is fit.

And then a bunch of maybes pending fitness. If Jackson gets a go that would be great reward for a guy who has improved significantly although talk about being thrown to the wolves in a debut.

It sure looks like we threw the Blues game to win this one.

So we'd want to ******* win this one.
We threw the easier game to win the harder one? Makes sense.

Maybe its just the usual self sabotage through poor selections. We have Fantasia and Evans in the SANFL and we play Mead.

Agree. He’s also been hit hard sitting under high balls two times this year by McGoverns and a third when bumped by Viney. It’s the going to ground which signals his ageing legs and mindset. We have to look for alternatives relatively soon.

Jackson and Sinn need to be ready to play midfield minutes alongside of Butters, Rozee, JHF, Drew and Duursma come round 1 next year. I’d be looking at getting Bergman back in there too.

Another couple yesterday...
He has been in the wrong place, wrong time half a dozen times this year and paid a brutal price each time. Sometimes you get away with it, but this year he has copped full force knees in the back which wouldn't be allowing the original injury from the McGovern pre season game to heal to 100%. I'm saying that this is the main reason for an ordinary year output wise. I also believe he has runs on the board and shouldn't be required to throw in the towel yet...I can't see how Burgoyne / Mead / Sinn have passed him by just yet.

The end has come fast for Trav. I hope the proud man calls it this year. The speed of the current game is frightening and he actually looks slower each week at this point.

Imagine making the GF this year and having Trav,Robbie and TJ in the stands.
Boak has had a very interrupted season, I don't think he's at the end at all. Just lacking continuity.

Aside from next week, does anybody feel it’s this year or bust?

Boak nearly done

Lycett nearly done

Dixon nearly done

Jonas cooked

Orazio cant stay fit

Backline suspect

I mean we are having a great year but I’m concerned there will be a drop off.

Also, if we can manufacture a new coach then there will be a new system there too.
Aside from Dixon and Lycett, we can cover the rest pretty comfortably.

Lord can cover Dixon reasonably well if he learnt to kick straight.

This game is going to tell us whether we're a legitimate contender or just another piss blaster like so many other seasons.

If we lose we should sack Hinkley
It won't tell us anything, we're working through a few key injuries and it looks like we will be very undermanned.

If we play again in finals and have a fit starting side, it's a different ball game.

Collingwood right now have no injury concerns, but it may not be the case come September.

We've already shown this season that our best can match it, we've beaten more top 8 sides than most. One loss whilst banged up doesn't change that.

Or the players were too banged up to play this week and potentially next.

It happens. The timing sucks but it is what it is.

We're unlikely to regain more than maybe one of JHF, Dixon, McKenzie. That's three very important players.

Lycett still looks injured and that's the one decision I don't understand - why did we rush him back.

(Log in to remove this ad.)

Bonner stood up yesterday so he’d have to be in contention.
Rioli back hopefully with a lot less weight on his mind.

Dixon, JHF, McKenzie unavailable. Now DBJ added to the list.
Lycett is clearly not fit so should be part of this list as well.

Hayes no game time this weekend but maybe that works in his favour.

Outs:
Mead
Burgoyne
DBJ
Lycett

Ins:
Rioli
Bonner
Narkle
Hayes/Visentini

Captain Fantastic gets a reprieve

Edit: forgot about Burton. Swap him for Jonas.

If you mean resting, it doesn't look like it to me. Doesn't look like we threw it. If you mean mentally, yeah I agree. Too many players were beaten and not composed with the pressure. Just outplayed and wasn't up to it on the day. The number of changes not helpful. Two good kickers for goal were meh when it mattered.

Hopefully we're not about to slide and we can show might against Collingwood and win.

Sometimes a player gets dropped because they're not playing to their potential.

Yes, they may still be better than the guy that comes in, but it's sending a message.

Burton has been poor by his standards, and yes he's still better than the guys that came in - but I'm sure he's been told already he's not playing at the level he can, and as it's not improved, they've sent the message.

And yes, they potentially picked this game as we already had numerous outs and were pushing crap up a hill anyway.

Bonner much the same - was getting complacent and can be so much better.

It's about getting the most out of them rather than letting the cruise.

I'm not convinced that the likes of McKenzie, Dixon and JHF have injuries that would prevent them from playing, in my mind they were rested. The latter two in particular finished the previous game whilst McKenzie was basically cleared of anything more than an ankle sprain by the injury report.

I think yesterday gave us a glimpse into what it looks like when we take a few players out of the team and it's certifiably ugly. I'd bring everyone back.

Do you really see Hayes playing?

If it was a final they would have all been playing, I mean Dixon was rested pre bye and can’t last out a couple of games without looking crook.

Be interesting to see what value they put on this game.

Did you see McKenzie on crutches after the game last week?

Dixon hobbling around for weeks.

I hope I'm just missing the sarcasm.

I reckon some are a bit harsh on Lord who as has already been said `could ' have scored 5 goals in last night's game, and as a big lump of a lad the natural ability to take strong marks is a lot harder to find in a player than one who may be a better kick, but doesn't have the aforementioned attribute.
Getting him specialist coaching in the mechanics of kicking is extremely important, but if Dixon isn't fit ( which is unfortunately likely) he will have to play against the wobblers.

Re the specialist coaching bit it almost certainly won't happen in kern's tenure but hopefully wiser heads will eventually prevail.

Re next week's game, the wobblers don't have a big forward line so there should be absolutely no place for Jonas in our defence, he tends to disrupt it anyway leaving Aliir in particular way too much to do, and if he plays I suspect we can mark down at least a goal a qtr from his inefficiencies.

Mead obviously has to go, as does McEntee and DBJ due to concussion, and if Lycett can't bend his back ( ala last night) Hayes has to replace him.

Depending on the availability of JHF and Butters, Burgoyne may get a reprieve and I wouldn't be against both Fantasia and Rioli working at the feet of Marshall and Dixon (if available) or Lord.

But this is AFL football and the only thing that matters in AFL football is winning games. You should put your best team on the park who have the greatest ability to win games.

And to be honest, I still don't even see exactly what was so bad about Burton's performances in previous weeks. It's not like he was playing at Jonas levels. He was serviceable and as we now know, serviceable at AFL level is actually pretty good.

We had a winning team and a winning mix of players. We had to make a raft of changes due to injury. We then needlessly made another raft of changes to address minor form issues and the players who came in were largely SANFL spuds. So in the end we further destabilised a team that was already going to be very destabilised, and we saw the impact of that on the field.

If there is one truism in AFL football it is that you don't **** with winning form if you can help it. And we decided to **** with winning form, and we found out what happened.

It was the same with Sinn inclusion earlier in the year, the only difference being earlier in the year we were able to cover Sinn's shitness.

I think we are being extremely harsh on Lord ... yes he missed shots BUT he took some great marks and contested well.
Had he kicked straight we would still lost but 5goals to Lord and we would cheering loud for him.
Previous games his goal kicking was woeful. I’m usually supportive but it’s not acceptable and they were momentum killers. Not to mention easier shots on goal.

Don't be surprised, if Collingwood do the same thing this week against you. They would see the trip to Adelaide as an inconvenience and would be aiming at carlton the week after wouldn't surprise if they rest a couple of stars this week. Play your strongest side possible and try and lock up top 2.
