Henry has shown to be a strong contested mark and very good kick at goals. IMO he projects more as a Mihocek replacement.

Henry doesn’t currently have the tank to stray too far from goals, so haven’t seen anything yet that makes me think he can replace WHE.

Absolutely.

He’s a good talent, and I’d love to see him stay at Collingwood and develop.

I just note that he hasn’t been re-signed yet despite us re-signing players who would appear to be further down the pecking order.

And I also note that his natural spot has just been taken by a debutant who is clearly a better player. And we have another waiting in the wings (Krueger)
Someone with a bigger body, more footy experience and 5 years older a better player at the moment? I'm shocked lol But Henry has more talent than any of our forwards. Another pre-season where he will get stronger will help with his defensive stuff. He will re-sign. Like Elliott will too. I reckon they are the next off the rank that will be announced.

I do hope you’re right.

But if it doesn’t work out that way, it will be for the best. It hasn’t taken us long to stop being outraged at losing Treloar, Stephenson and Philips.

Fingers crossed its soon. Probably just hangling over $ and whether its a 2 or 3 year. I'd give him 3 years. But imagine how good he'd be in 2 years? geez.

Treloar would be the star of our midfield now.
You mean the guy currently missing because of his 3rd (I think) calf injury in the past 2 years? Old man injury that one.

76 was right in the sense that we aren’t missing the guys we moved on and won’t miss Henry if he were to decide to leave, but it’s a very different discussion to one on losing a guy of Henry’s talent because we currently can’t identify a role for him in a team that’s won 10 on the bounce…

We are not going to let a young talent like Henry walk out.

Didn't know he was injured again. Every time I watch the Dogs he seems to be one of their best.

So, the question is: how will we go against one of the best 2 teams in it?

We'll find out a lot about our team this week. Alas, I think we'll struggle with their manic midfield. Adams out hurts bad. I can imagine our centre-square setup being Cox/Cameron, De Goey/elliot (alternating forward), Crisp/Lipinski, Pendlebury/Daicos. A good combination but probably not quite hard enough to face the demons.

I'd have Lipinski play a shut down on Oliver the same way Aish did.

Then the question is whether we bring a forward up to the stoppage and risk May and Lever running riot. I'd be against it unless we're getting smashed in the clearance again. Then I'd make the move as a break glass in emergency.

Everything else is self evident apart from selection.

Grundy plays another in the 2s. Carmichael comes in for Adams. One of the Brown or Macrae are the sub. Howe should get up unless it's a shocker of a corky.

Any other ideas?

All in all, reckon we go down by about 25 points... sadly. But we've had a hell of a ride!
I'm not sure if Carmichaels has the tank to replace Adams.
So I'd move Maynard to the midfield to offer grunt, and bring in Ruscoe who hasn't done much wrong at HB.
If we're ever going to test Maynard as mid the next 3 weeks are perfect while Adams recovers. Similarly Ruscoe at HB.

When carmichael started v adelaide - he had the highest average speed of any player on the field, suggest he has a half decent work rate

I’m not sure if it’s this week, but I reckon there is room for Grundy, Cox and Cameron in the same team.

Cox has X factor and opposition teams have to strategise against his height.
Every opponent would be happy with his omission.
He plays Forward/ruck.

Grundy needs the seniors game time to be right for September. We need expose him now and allow him to succeed or fail and be omitted.
But he plays because he’s a big part of replacing Tays presence at CCs.
Because he does have presence and a finals record.
Because I grow tired of full backs kicking to the Allir Allir type exit and that type of guy being too big an exit option without contest.
He’s also a good foil for Gawn, especially at general stoppages.

Cameron is where I get a little innovative. I want him down back filling the hole as an interception and contested mark defender.
He’s mobile enough. Just.
And he can switch forward/ruck as needed.
Pendles gets released from defense to go mid, where he’ll surely be needed in Adam’s absence.
Before you flame me, this Cameron role is exactly the role many put McStay in. And Cameron might even be better at it.
(FWIW - I’m not against McStay as a recruit, just at the price & duration).

I’ll grab my flack jacket now.
If Moore, Murphy and Howe are available, I think that we've got intercept marking in our defence relatively well covered.
Dees have a really low-in confidence Brown (and sometimes Weideman) as tall forwards with Jackson/Gawn as a switch.
Fritsch (Maynard) and KK (Quaynor) will be their most dangerous forwards and we have them well matched up on.

Cameron's height could be useful down back, but he's just not aggressive/strong enough in the contest for mine much of the time.
Gawn may well target this. Draper did similar.
That's where Cameron and Cox in the ruck is useful, it likely keeps Gawn in the middle much of the time. I think Jackson is less of a threat at the centre square or as a forward. Jackson likely struggles to compete at the tap out with Cameron and Cox.

I like the balance of our side currently if Murphy stays on the park and I'm excited to see what Dean can offer as a Howe replacement in time.
I don't greatly think McStay enhances it too much, albeit he seems down on confidence at present given he's out the door and it is appears to be impacting his form. Something like 1 goal in the past 6 weeks. I find it hard to justify the money being offered and the term.

At present, Checkers/AJ/Cameron seems enough tall timber up forward, with Billy/Ginni/Wilbur/McCreery/DeGoey providing mid/small forward cover.
It's less traditional than Curnow/McKay and Hawkins/Cameron but, in combination, it's hard to match up on.
Our damage is being done with chaos balls into the forward line, rather than long kicks for opposition talls to pick off, and passages of play when we get out the back.
I'd have been more excited to see us target Larkey (or Mitch Lewis before he resigned) than an in-between sized McStay, albeit he seems durable and can take some of the load off Checkers.

He’s been good for them, but I’m not convinced he’d have been at that level with us especially in 2022. His defensive game has room for improvement and I don’t know if his contested work is strong enough to overcome that if he were still with us (he fits nicely with the Libba and Dunkley dynamic).

I liken him to Lipinski who likewise doesn’t have the greatest defensive workrate. The major differences are speed out of stoppage where Treloar has the edge and ball use where Lipinski has the edge. Personally I think Lipinski just brings more to the table.

On a side note their numbers are remarkably similar with Treloar having the better DE the only shock, but I suspect that’s because of the difference in uncontested ball. The Dogs flick it around more by hand which leads to more disposals and better disposal efficiency.

I'm more a fan of Carmichael and DeGoey rotating forward.
Crisp and Pendlebury rotating off half back.
J Daicos being used in spurts with Elliott for a bit of pace in there.

I think Maynard stays down back. As a one-on-one defender he is elite and will be best match up for Fritsch, who he can intimidate as well as match on a lead/on the ground.

No point in targeting players we have a minimal chance of securing just because it sounds impressive to say we are in the mix of clubs chasing bigger names.

Even though he isn't, Fritsch looks and plays like a private school dandy, the difference being he is actually good. However has never done much against us. 6 goals in 6 games, 5 of which they lost. I think I would like to see Maynard destroy him.

He’s the key to their scoring in 2022. I’m not sure we can put 80+ points past them, but unless their midfield dominates I can’t see them kicking 80+ points without 3-4 from Fritsch…

None of this is even close to the reasons what went on in those years. You don’t have the capacity to understand what MM was doing and sure as hell aren’t aware of Buckley’s game plan.

You’re a Dufflecoater. Who lives in fear from the ghosts of seasons past.

We are a KPD, KPF and a couple of quality mids short of what we need.

But we have a game plan that stacks up. And the boys have belief in themselves. Which might be enough this year.

But I won’t be curling up in fetal position if this year we come up short. We shouldn’t even be here. But we are and Fly will equip us with all we can do this year.

Thank you for making my point. We are short of what we need so we need to be inventive and take risks in other ways to try and snatch a premiership, it ain’t gonna happen if we continue like this…they are playing well…but will run out of steam.

Nobody will be disappointed by our performance this year, but if you’re in the finals you may as well have a crack at the premiership.
