I just got an email ballot for suns and lions tickets. So decision 18th for a game on 21st. Not much time to book flights etc. Obviously only Queenslanders can go with borders still closed.

When you sit back and try to take in everybody's opinion of ins & outs its clear that we have mixed opinions of our players skills and faults. I will say that as a group we might all agree that Atkins should be dropped. But might be the only consensus we have. I wonder what is really going on inside the club. The arguments and debates and conflicting opinions. Add to that, that most of the selection committee would be reading the papers or forums (such as big footy) and be tempted to do what the fans are asking for.

Not and easy job. I wonder if as a group we could come up with an agreement of three players to drop and three to come in.

If we get belted again I hope Nicks lives up to his promise of dropping senior players. I've never been in favour of tanking but if you're ever going to do it in our predicament this is the time. If I was coach I'd play as many young players as we can for the rest of the year and say to them "Which ones of you want a contract for next year". We're going nowhere this year anyway so we may as well find out who will take us forward.

It’s not tanking when you drop non performing players. Regardless of experience. Sholl and Hamill deserve a crack and will make us better. Not playing them is tanking. Kelly must go because he’s not suited, not because he’s not a good defender. Drop a Rat and run those guys through with 4 guaranteed games to find their feet. As long as they run hard though.

Undefeated on the Gold Coast. Reckon this is the first loss coming up. All streaks in sport come to an end.

Don't care about changes, just keep playing the young guys.

Yup, it's Gold Coast's 200th game, and their last streak to end.

I want more debutants for the midfield, and I'm happy to drop Seedsman, Atkins, Lynch.

At some point this season we are going to have to look at overhauling our backline, and fill it with players who can actually hit targets out of defense.

It seemed pretty evident that one of the key strategies that Nicks was looking to employ was aggressive central corridor kicking to release runners out of CHB. The only problem is the rusted on players not being able to hit or even take those initial kicks. It seemed the players who adapted to this best in the preseason were new players, and forwards on long leads like Davis and Stengle.

I think Rory Laird is working on borrowed time and reputation right now. His 'midfielder in defense' role doesn't seem to be effective anymore, and his hospital balls out of defense are a sure fire way to see the ball come right back.

Kelly is a good defender, but he also has severe limitations in executing the apparent exit from defense strategy (he actually seems like the Anti-Nicks Backman based on his skillset).

With this in mind i'd really like to see us set up an ultra aggressive defense set up with highly skilled, kick first players. For example;

Sholl Doedee Milera
Smith Talia Hamill

With McAsey and Brown rotating off the bench.

I have no doubt we will be scored on, but we will also see some pretty slick and aggressive ball movement out of defense.

Should we take Round one into account when deciding who gets dropped this week? There were no great performances against Sydney but imho Gibbs, Smith, Kelly, Jones, McAsey, ROB and Davis were the least effective.

Not a single player would be totally happy with their perforance against Poort, arguably ROB was the best of a very bad bunch. The least effective imho were Atkins, Seedsman, Keays, Murphy, Walker and Crocker. Doedee also struggled in his first game in nearly two years but you have to expect this to happen.

You could make a case for dropping any and all of the 22 who played against Poort but do we want a revolving door at selection. I would give Keays and Crocker a second chance and the Rat may be the token experienced player to be dropped.

Out - Sloane, Kelly and Atkins

In - McAdam, Poholke and Hamill

I hate having to give this post a “like” possibly as much as Scorpus hated having to write it..

Because it is simply the truth..
It'll be a test for sure.

Coach torches senior players and says it won't be kids making way. So we either go in unchanged or more kids come in. It's that or we know it's BS. Roo has even mentioned playing youth in amongst his ramblings.

We must be playing only players that are on the right side of that bell curve. That means we need to have a really good read on where that player actually sits on that curve. Unfortunately the AFC has perhaps proven to be the worst in the league at that as it continually hangs in too long to it's senior players and constantly invest time in players who are clearly getting no better.

Who's truly on the up and has a great ceiling. Let's just play those guys and get games into them. Screw the rest, don't care about the result.

If needed, 1 senior guy in each part of the ground, ie back, middle and forward.
Agree with this

We're not contending this year

We have to look at our list and work out which players will realistically be part of our next crushing preliminary final defeat

Probably.

Give them a chance to redeem then gut them

So many players on this team have had plenty of chances over the past three years. Just gut them and be done with it.

I'm happy to back in a response for the time being if we also make at least one statement at selection. One of Smith, Laird, Lynch or the Crouches need to be dropped.

Set the standard that no, players aren't just able to play like shit and get away with it. And if there's more shit dished up, more players will go

Port were the 4th oldest team in the AFL last week.

There is of course a sense of excitement about youth because of their 2018 picks.

But they are in no way shape or form a rebuilding side. They are for the now.
They are a year ahead of us, because the played the kids last year... whilst we persisted with the older crew, despite consistent 2nd half fade outs. We should have pulled the trigger last year, when it was clear we had an issue.

Port have some very important older players who they will lose within a few years, but at least they are providing experience whilst their kids are developing at a rapid rate.

We now need to fast-track our next gen, which Nicks appears to be doing... but we need more from our experienced players who are not showing the way.

Mark my words, GC will rinse us this week..... Sadly. But this being said, I agree with the collective here, we need to try a few kids that we see the future of our club and stop getting games into our tried and tested vanilla 6 out of 10 guys. With this in mind, My suggestion would be:

OUT:
Kelly : Inj - no risk taking chances and frankly with Doedee and McAsey in the team, I'm not sure I have him a lock in best 22 anyway.
Crocker : I just don't see it.
Keays : Maybe give him one more week, but we need to decide where he actually plays, was a forward in NEAFL last season yet we were playing him back?
Atkins : Has ZERO ticker, I can't stand him as a player.
Seedsman : See Atkins, teases us all every 5-6 weeks with a decent game then throws up such weak efforts every other game.
Sloane : Inj - We need him fit and ready for the season, no point risking him this week.

IN:
Sholl: Has earnt his chance, everyone seems to rave about his effort and temperament - just try him.
Gallucci: It's make or break for him, needs to have 5-6 games this season so we can decide whether he is in our plans long-term.
Schoenberg: I love the look of him, seems like a no fuss hard midfielder - we need something new to our midfield
McPherson: Much like Gallucci (however his issues have been injuries since drafted) we need to see what he has and can offer long term.
Hamill: seems like a realy versatile defender, I'd like to see what he can do.
Davis: Again, similar to Gallucci - he has been on the list long enough that we should know what he has for us.

Team;

FB: Laird, Talia, Brown
HB: Doedee, McAsey, Milera
C: Smith, BCrouch, Jones
HF: Lynch, Walker, McHenry
FF: Murphy, Fogarty, Davis
FOLL: O'Brien, MCrouch, Schoenberg

INT: Sholl, Gallucci, Hamill, McPherson
