How were Gold Coast so bad last year with all that depth?? Did they tank to go after Rowell?

They would play 20-30 mins of decent footy and then fall away. Lack of fitness combined with inexperience and a massive injury list.

There have been worse sides out there that haven't received a priority pick.

Zorko will come in won't he? Stefan Martin?

Lyons spot is safe and secure. Think we'll see CEY hold his spot with Berry Jr being replaced by Zorko. CEY started the year off poorly but was good against West Coast, would be unlucky to be dropped, despite being late call up. Smith instant out for Martin, if fit.

at least one crouch dropped for schoenberg and tex out for either himmelberg or frampton.

also atkins is injured so either scholl or mcadam to replace him.

If the crouch brothers stay in, can we atleast see a reversal of role from them? I want to see Matt burrowing in and getting the ball out and Brouch bursting away from a contest, can we atlleast try that please?

Makes all those extra picks look a bit silly if they keep playing like this all season. Didn't they have a good start last year and fade away after a few rounds?

For two seaons in a row they let nature take its course once it became apparent a low finish was looming regardless, and for that they bought King, Lukosius, Rankine, Rowell, and Anderson with picks 1, 2, 2, 3, and 6. 3 mids and 2 keys from that area of the draft will go a fair way to righting the wrongs under some equally new competent leadership.

Reading mixed reviews here on Crocker. I thought he looked unfit and appears to play selfish. He didn't move the ball on quick enough in transition, taking set shots well outside his range etc.

Not sure what some are seeing in him. I'd have Davis, McAdam and Gallucci (yes) ahead of him and Stengle when available. Let's see 100% if these guys are going to make it rather than play Crocker, seems a waste to pick him.

Obviously we have a shopping list of senior players who are demanding to be dropped - but who do we have to replace them?

Here's a list of players who weren't a part of the massacre yesterday afternoon, and my assessment of where they're at:
  • Riley Knight - Injured. Not AFL standard anyway
  • Bryce Gibbs - Has long since stopped caring and can't be bothered putting in the effort
  • Jordan Gallucci - Not AFL standard
  • Myles Poholke - Not AFL standard
  • David Mackay - Always gives 100%, but isn't always terribly effective, has been moved on to create vacancies for youth. Viable option but only after we've exhausted the list of kids needing games.
  • Kyle Hartigan - Has been moved on to get games into McAsey. Viable option, but only after we've exhausted the list of kids needing games.
  • Tyson Stengle - Suspended.
  • Billy Frampton - Not AFL standard.
  • Shane McAdam - Viable option. Untested, but mature enough and ready to go.
  • Josh Worrell - 1st year draftee KPP. Probably too raw/unready, but I'd still pick him ahead of Frampton & Himmelberg.
  • Harry Schoenberg - 1st year draftee. Probably too raw/unready, but I'd still pick him ahead of Dots & Gooch.
  • Patrick Wilson - Injured. Not AFL standard anyway.
  • Elliott Himmelberg - Not AFL standard.
  • Andrew McPherson - Viable option. Perpetually injured, but currently injury free. Now is as good a time as any to see what he offers.
  • Ronin O'Connor - 1st year draftee. Probably too raw/unready, but I'd still pick him ahead of Dots & Gooch.
  • Lachlan Sholl - Viable option, and hopefully next cab off the rank.
  • Ben Davis - Viable option. Hasn't shown anything in his 2 AFL games so far, but not yet written off completely.
  • Jordan Butts - Viable option. Next cab off the rank if one of our tall defenders (Talia/McAsey/Doedee) needs to be replaced.
  • Ace Taylor - 1st year rookie list draftee. Probably too raw/unready for AFL selection this year.
  • Lachlan Gollant - 1st year draftee. Probably too raw/unready for AFL selection this year.
  • Kieran Strachan - His selection would require an act of desperation. However, with only ROB & Frampton as the only other ruckmen on the list, we may yet be desperate enough to select him.
There really isn't a lot there. Only a handful of players who are ready to go youngsters - McAdam, McPherson, Sholl, Davis & Butts. Every other player on that list has some sort of caveat on their readiness or ability.

EDIT: Updated because I missed 3 players.

If there's one thing we're elite at it's finding reasons to keep hopelessly out of form seniors in the side. It gets to a point where you don't have a gut that's been in good form for 2 months that matches the position of the guy you need to drop. Sometimes you just need to drop the player and deal with the rest later.

Yeah I wouldn't waste any time on either keys or Crocker personally.

Turning garbage to gold is a rarity. Not saying it can't happen but it's very rare.

These are guys that were delisted, not even worthy of a trade.

So far Nicks has come across like a rookie coach.

I just see someone who's imitating and trying to look like a coach.

I'm really hoping he shows me something that says to me wow that was a good move.
has to drop at least one crouch otherwise facepalm. its time to stop being mr nice guy.

Butts in
McAsey to forward.
Scholl in
Schoenberg in

Tex B Crouch and Atkins out

I'm not dropping Brouch because it hurts his trade value. Getting pick 19/20 for him instead of 2 would be a disaster. Stick him up at small forward by all means.

Comparing crows to rd 1 to 3. Losing 2 coaches have been factor however I have seen a change in the midfield setup. I remember Brouch saying they had about 9 players run through the midfield Rd 1 and now it seems you see the same 4 players.

that's a nicks master stroke to shortened quarters. Crouch said on AA it had something to do with continuity or consistency in there being a factor now.

I thought he looked okay. Hard to move the ball quickly when there's nobody working hard up the field giving him options. Bloke was probably trying not to bomb it on Murphy's head.

Got a feeling that Walker will go out this week. The 'big move' to shake things up with either McAsey forward or Himmelberg/Frampton in. Tough on Tex - who'd want to be a forward in our current line up? - but he might be the one to cop the bullet.

Did anything get published on the reserves game? Scores, best players, match report... or did that info get filed away in Phil's top secret draw?

We know all we need to know. Got smacked, none played well, nobody deserves a call up. McAdam did play well, just needs more miles in the legs.

Wow.

You beat Weagles comfortably, then get back 2 key players.

The scoreboard is going to make for nasty reading this weekend. We will be lucky to stay within 100 points.

Ex-Crows more likely to kick more goals than current Crows.

Jesus.....It was only a very small part of that interview but very telling for me. That is when Nicks was asked about Himmelberg or Frampton coming in for Tex, Nicks admitted that some players came back in good condition and some didnt (referring to those two). Then said they are building their games and said they both played well in the scratch match. Funny that the scratch matches are state secrets atm and we cant make those assessments for ourselves.

The fact that those lads didnt impress or work at all in the pre season AND their time away during COVID is unacceptable. It means the coaches are playing a cooked 30yo Tex as 2nd ruck and cant justify dropping him or picking any of those two to play alongside him.

Riley Thilthorpe had to be told by Westies coach to not train as hard in his time off. #1 target. Dont tell me we need midfielders when our key position stocks are those two lazy pricks.

You believe him? Tex is woefully out of form, 2nd ruck isn't working, he needs to go based upon any degree of team first mentality. Someone asks about that and mentions viable replacements, you're caught, it's a direct question with direct answer required. But you have no intention of dropping Tex. What is the easiest out? What can't be disputed by anyone even if it's not true?
