I would like to keep Gollant in. The delivery to him was terrible and I reckon he definitely has something.

I agree with your interchange but it just shows our alarming lack of quality depth.

There's a few that seem like they need to be managed.

Sholl and Soligo, and probably Fog too.

Plus Himmelburg and Hinge ...
Sloane too.

We should have a plan over the next few weeks to rotate players.

Surely we get games into Gollant whilst Fogarty is struggling with his knee injury.

We should be developing depth by better player management.

Out:
Hinge (inj), Gollant, Himmelberg, Sholl, Berry

In:
Doedee, Walker, Thilthorpe, McHenry

Sub:
Cook

Notes:
* I’ve had enough of Sholl for 2023. The guy is a sunny weather, soft, downhill skier who turns to complete and utter shit whenever the opposition start to get a run on (hat tip to Brodie Smith who he learnt this from). Should have been dropped a fortnight ago.

* Berry’s kicking has somehow gotten even worse (it was always bad), and he still seems allergic to actually getting more than 4-5 possessions per quarter. The most concerning reversal of career trajectory I’ve seen at our club in a long time. Honestly not sure we’ll see him at AFL level again this year unless Laird or Dawson go down injured. Prior to Round 1, I would have had him down as a lock to finish top 6 in the B&F.

* Gollant and Himmelberg weren’t the problem today (the completely piss poor efforts and execution of our entire small and medium brigade was), but they only played due to others being managed, and that’s where they’re at in their careers. Easy drops for Walker and Thilthorpe.

* I’ve never been a fan of what McHenry offers in general, but there’s no way anyone can convince me that Sholl deserves a game over him right now. Give Ned a starting 22 position and see if he can retain it.

* Parnell is pretty lucky to survive after an unbelievably putrid game today, but the Hinge injury, and the fact that 17 other players also played like utter shit saves him

* Michalanney needs a rest soon, but the bye is coming so no point in it being this game.

* Sloane needs a rest, but again, what’s the point this close to the bye.

* I’d love to fit Worrell in, but against Daniher and Hipwood, you can’t drop Butts. Doedee in is a given. Sure, we could drop Parnell or Milera for Worrell, but let’s face it, that isn’t happening so why pretend that it might.

* SURELY Rankine won’t get suspended for an act where he legitimately reached for the ball and the opponent he collided with suffered no injury whatsoever, will he? If he somehow does, McHenry would come in for Izak, and (hopefully) Cook or Nankervis would replace Sholl on the wing.

This is where I see the gaps in our side in the midfield and forward line in the future, but is becoming an emerging issue

R O'Brien - Dawson - Laird
C Jones - Pedlar - ???

HF Rachele - Fogarty - Rankine
F Thilthorpe - Walker - ???

I Soligo - ??? - Murphy/Keays - [7th Defender]

The issues as I see it:

1) We require one elite inside midfielder, not just an accumulator, an elite ball winner and user. As far as I see it our core midfield is one player short. We've got four players (Dawson, Laird, Pedlar, Soligo) earmarked for there with Rachele playing a split mid/forward role, likely rotating with Pedlar. Currently the 5th mid is Sloane and it's not cutting it.

2) We require an outside ball user who isn't Sholl, and isn't a defender, inside midfielder or small forward playing wing (Milera, Crouch, Hately, McHenry, Murphy, etc).

3) I don't think there is room for both Murphy and Keays in the side and IMO it's rare for both to have an impact in the same match. This role should be condensed into one player (Murphy is leading the race) leaving room for another forward, either a small forward or half forward, but they must be a genuine goal kicker.

Currently I don't think the players required for 1 or 2 are on our list, and the ideal candidate for 3 is McAdam who is injured for another 2-3 weeks.

Based on this the changes I'd make are

Out: Hinge (concussion), Himmelberg, Gollant, Sholl, Sloane, Parnell
In: Worrell, Thilthorpe, Walker, Cook, Berry, Doedee

Sub: Parnell

Forward line restored

Keays gets a temporary reprieve until McAdam is ready. At that time assess who is performing worse (Murphy or Keays) and replace them with McAdam

Cook in for Sholl, with the goal of rotating through the most in form wing options

Berry in for Sloane, though I would also be happy with Schoenberg. This is really just a placeholder role in the side until we draft or trade in a suitable midfielder, so rotate through the most in form player and give Sloane heaps of rests. Also can be used to assess which of the players on our list are worth keeping if they can perform in this spot.

Doedee in for Parnell. I prefer us with a taller structure in defense. Parnell competing with Milera and Smith for a spot. I honestly wouldn't mind if any of those three were dropped or moved to sub role (Smith unlikely and the best performed recently)

Worrell in for Hinge, but with the goal of Worrell staying in the side. When Hinge returns he can replace the worst performed half back or wing (eg Cook, Milera, Smith, etc). Probably will replace Milera.

I don’t reckon Fogarty is injured anymore

Medial takes about 4-5 weeks and he’s thru that period and no strapping anymore

Just out of form and into some old habits

He will go better with Tex back next week , but that in itself a concern

Out: Hinge (inj), Himmelberg (4eva), Gollant, Berry (sub)

Keays - 100 games, well done but the skills, the dumb shots at goal and his want to always run into trouble on his wrong side is surely just hard to continually turn a blind eye too; McHenry can do his role, has gone past him as a player and is 4 years younger.

Sloane - management, Nicks has made a rod for his own back as he was moved back into the inside as a quick fix which he has done well but now he needs to figure out how to start transitioning him out of the middle now so he doesn’t stagnate the team in the back half of the season especially as taking away that midfield role from Berry and Schoenberg has led to those two players games crumbling.

They really want Sloane as an on field coach and he’s playing what 60% game time at most? If that’s his max start transitioning him into that sub role, people will point to his performances being very good in 2nd half’s which they have been but Saturday showed that’s no good if you’re already way behind the 8 ball at halftime.

In:

Worrell - I’m quite sick of this can’t find a spot for him nonsense, he is strong AFL quality, you find/create a bloody role for him.

Doedee, Walker, Thilthorpe, McHenry

B: Michaelanney, Butts, Worrell
HB: Smith, Murray, Doedee
C: Sholl, Soligo, Jones
HF: Pedlar, Fogarty, Murphy
F: Rankine, Walker, Rachele
R: Thilthorpe, Laird, Dawson

I/C: O’Brien, McHenry, Milera, Parnell
Sub: Sloane

Ideally Milera or Parnell should be trying their cute little turnover kicks in the SANFL especially considering Milera is taking the piss out on the field half the time but Hinge out saves them, Jones might start needing to go inside more again, problems now appearing with Rachele, Soligo and Michaelanney needing to be carried to the bye.

Would also strongly start considering Billy Dowling for the rotation mid role, I’ve seen enough that he is the only next wave of midfielders on the list that has a chance of becoming a 1st rotation midfielder at AFL level now Berry has gone backwards at an alarming rate, there’s no point wasting anymore time with those who have previously been given a go in that position.

Also looking through the list how do you get in a position where Crouch, Hately, Berry, Brown & Schoenberg are your mid depth and not one of them can hit a target by foot?

Firstly, I hope Scorpus is ok.

Secondly, I wonder what the record amount of weekly changes is in AFL history?

Thirdly, there are no prizes sorry. Just thought it worth a go to generate more traffic given we're all feeling a bit flat after today.
1) what's up with Scorpus, please? If he's unwell, best wishes for a full recovery.

2) it won't matter what the record is; Nicks has got his team worked out and will make minimal changes.
He is not an axe-swinger.
Walker back, rested. Gollant OUT.
Doedee back, if recovered from concussion. Berry OUT.
Hinge OUT
(concussion protocols), maybe Worrell IN, or McHenry.
OUT: Himmelberg, for anybody. Thilthorpe, if recovered.

3) "A bit flat" is an understatement. Yesterday's meek capitulation was totally unexpected by me. I was thinking a close loss and certainly more competitive effort.

I coped better with the Pies loss --- we had them for all but the last minute and played hard/well all game.

Out: Himmelburg, Hinge (inj), Parnell, Milera, Sloane, Gollant
In: Worrell, Doedee, Walker, Thilthorpe, Nankervis, Berry
Nicks won't drop Milera whose Gold Pass was extended after last week's (good) game. Milera will wilt again vs the pressure of Brisbane, Gold Pass invoked, then will play ok again vs GCS and WCE.

Sloane will probably be rested against WCE, or even GCS and WCE. Nicks will be looking for as much experience as possible vs Brisbane, as in the Geelong game.

I thought Parnell was ok yesterday --- didn't star, but ok.

You'd retain Berry? Why, please?
How about McHenry back in?
