Wouldn't mess with our defense. It's working.

Hogan has to get in. But not really sure who could make space for him. Harsh to drop Henry after his first game. Crowden didn't have his best game, but like his attack and I think we could miss his pressure. Probably go for resting Frederick even when his first half was pretty good. Blakely under pressure as well, but I am not 100% sure about dropping a mid for tall forward based on team balance.

We have a short break after the GWS game. Play Sat then play again Wed.

Lobb will likely play, but if his ankle isn’t 100% then he should be rested and replaced with Hogan. As square peg says above GWS very unlikely to play Jacobs and Mumford and if in some strange world they do we can beat them by selecting a team that will run harder. Darcy can take centre clearances and then drop back. Let Hogan and Tabs ruck i50.

I didn’t think Duman was too bad. Some nice spoils and defensive tackling. His kicking is very rushed at times. So if there is a rotation thing going on he could be replaced with Watson.

Valente to get his chance as part of rotation against Richmond.

I don't see the point in sugar coating it because it's his first game, he played a pretty bad debut imo. I'm sure he will be better for it but what I saw was;

No composure
Slow decision making
Poor skill execution
Poor defensively

If he wasn't Liam Henry he'd be straight back out on that performance.

Obviously last night is not a reflection of his true ability and he will be persevered with.

Agree that he wasn't great. Too much hype maybe.
But Frederick has been given the chance to build some continuity. Henry will certainly be given the same chance. ZERO chance he gets dropped. He's already on the team sheet for next week.

Hogan in for any of our pressure smalls, on the reasoning of increasing scoring power is a confusing assumption imo.

surely the guy only comes in for Lobb, Tabs or Darcy?

Does no-one remember our complete lack of pressure once the ball hit the deck last time Hogan, Lobb and Tabs were on the park together?

Don't underestimate the importance of percieved pressure on the opposition moving the ball out of our forward fifty and its influence on turnovers/repeat entries and scoring opportunities.

Its 2020 Hogan we're talking about not 1992 Tony Lockett.

Here I've compared Crowdens stats from his 5 games with Hogans 3 games so far this year.

Have a read, pretty damning if you ask me. Screenshot_20200823-004900_Chrome.jpg

Why are people so desperate to out Duman? Doesn't do a lot special but also doesn't do much wrong in a defence that's more than held its own given the challenges we've had.

Henry deserves another week now he's had a taste. I think the hype, debut, and indigenous round may have got to him and hopefully JL can settle him down and reassure that he's not expected to produce a miracle play everytime he gets the ball.

Can’t drop Henry, seemed to me like he thought he was still playing junior footy / whatever those scratch matches aren’t meant to be. Will be better each game as he adjusts to the pace

Agreed, dropping Henry would be a terrible move for development, he was caught out by the pace and goes into next week with less pressure and more awareness of what to expect.

You could tell it wasn’t going to be his night but he didn’t mope around, he worked hard to provide an option up the field and get himself into the game.
Has to play next week.

No. If he wasn't a debutant/youngster he might be straight back out on that performance.

What will happen is he'll get a great review with one of the coaches who will go through and explain what he did well and what he needs to improve on. Then next game they'll expect him to improve on some/all of those things. If he does they'll likely keep him in to develop. If he doesn't then he will have to go back and work on things at training.

Could you imagine if you got a review and then had no place to fix things they wanted you to fix? That'd be great for development.

At the game he looked fine. Really the only thing I could see was that he got overwhelmed with the occasion with ball in hand. Not sure he's going to be able to effectively address that at training ;)

I expect him not to shit the bed with the ball. Numerous times last night he put us under all sorts of pressure with his decisions and disposal

Those 12 on 12 scratchies are umpired by the likes of David Hale etc. In the gallery was one of the Swans assistants umpiring. In a video clip of one of the games highlights (against Geelong seconds from memory) there were turnovers with blokes all by themselves i50. Waste of time. I think each of the guys coming back need a week or two in an actual AFL to get match ready and conditioned.

I doubt there would be any changes except for any blokes to be managed. Rory Lobb looked a bit sore and had that ankle prob. Maybe he could be managed for Hogan.

I suspect Mundy will get managed at some point to enable Valente to play but that may need to wait another week or two.
Yep, it’s a strange year without WAFL and less preseason / fitness across the board. Most new players into the team have take a game or two to get back to standard, even Fyfe and Walters.

Any new selections won’t do much for us winning, but maybe help out the following weeks. You’ve gotta give players 2-3 games minimum to prove themselves. Henry stays in for me.

Because people can get this idea that fringe/lesser players are supposed to have perfect games and not allowed to make the same mistakes that were made by Cerra, Fyfe, Mundy, etc. And their good work is completely ignored. I've done it myself with certain players, so not trying to get on my high horse.

Ultimately, we put Young in the side, and will probably be a lot better. He won't make the crappy short kicks that Duman made on the wing. But for now the only option is Watson, and I doubt there would be any improvement. Might as well stick with what is working as a group.

One thing I think the team needs to work on is that transition from defence to the midfield when moving the ball. Ryan said it himself in that Taberner is so important in giving them a dump kick up the line where he'll win it or halve it. Sometimes I don't think our guys work hard enough to find space to move the ball once our defenders intercept it. In contrast the transition from attack to defence is like lightning - which is obviously more important, so big ticks for that.

Schultz second half was pretty good imo.
I mean yeah he was, I just couldn't find anyone else to boot for Hogan who should be in the team.

I'd hate to see if we hadn't have won this game. Crikey some of you people are a joke.

Yeah, screw people for having opinions

different players.. Need to also include pressure acts which is something crowden brings that hogan won’t / doesn’t.

i wouldn’t be surprised if they hold hogan over for the Richmond game.

how very passive aggressive of you

No that is just my opinion. I think some people on here are unreasonable. I have seen the game twice and I thought it was a comprehensive win and very good contributions across the board. I would like to see Hogan back in, but whoever he replaces will be unlucky. To be criticising Henry on his first game for missing a few kicks, despite offering good outlet options at times is bizarre. Drop Shultz, who was very good. Some of the defensive work from Duman was excellent. Blakely looked like he played on Kennedy and had a good second half after he settled down and kept kennedy pretty quiet. We smashed a team who had defensive ratings that were almost off the chart. I could go on but I won't bore you with it. I find some of this stuff no less mean spirited than the West article following our loss against Carlton.
I'm going to watch the game again today and probably again tomorrow, because it was a great display of pressure footy by a bunch of kids and a few superstars.
I hope that is openly aggressive enough.
