Strategy Changes: Round 3 West Coast Eagles vs. Fremantle Dockers

McDonald hasn’t been an AFL player for 5 years. Narkle literally got delisted. He was worst on for Port in finals.

Voss is a WAFL player that had the most marks i50. Riddle hasn’t even played WAFL.

Literally not a single one of those changes is going to improve anything.
It might ultimately improve the guys that get dropped.

I'm hoping we lose this one so the board will be forced to make a change. I'm not letting this list be wasted.

From second quarter onwards it basically felt like I was watching a team in purple that looked like they were 3 goals behind and not really sure what to do even though the scoreboard said differently. We continued to play a zone that wasn't working against a team that scores from mids running through the centre v a team in red manning up so tight they were sharing underwear. Yes, the umps were very inconsistent which made some heads out there drop but that's nothing new for us so they just need to suck it up and work harder.

I saw a team packed full of talent but bar Treacy, unsure who was meant to be doing what until they got a handpass in the guts while walking backwards into traffic and had to think quickly (JOMs specialty).

In defence we just seem to protect area, and in offence, in most cases, eyes seemed only for a first handpass, regardless of whether that put us in a better position or gave Sydney extra time to defend. Bloke near me spent all game blaming Freddie for all the teams woes, but anyone with a brain could see he'd been given a very specific role to cover an area and players running through that which meant he was often close to the ball but didn't seem like he'd been given a job to go get it or tackle for it, just cover the players or area near by. It is clear that the roles are so tight that any sense of instinct, modification appears off the table for most players.

I just want to see what these players can do when playing on instinct, particularly outside D50. Yeah we need to get Young and Darcy (and probaby Walters/Swit) back in the team to replace Voss, Ras and Banfield, but we can't keep playing like this.

It's like we have a list full of Lindt chocolates but JLo has switched the contents for carob.

Practicing at training is very different to lining up in front of a big crowd with big expectations. Pressure impacts performance.
He was the same in the wafl early in the season last year. Anything on an angle was no chance. He improved late. He isn't a naturally good goal kicker so it is something he would need to work on. He thinks it's all in his head (like you do) which may make him less inclined to put in the extra work. Probably a mix of both.

This was shitting me up the wall. Zonal defence only work against teams that have slow entires or continually go high and long like Carlton. They do not work against teams like Sydney who were going direct with the short hit-up kicks all day. Felt like their players were constantly in 5-10m of space in dangerous areas. And we were still defending that way late in the game when scores were tight.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see changes mid-game that need to be made yet he either doesn’t make them or waits too long - and I’m not talking about the Serong to full-forward or Treacy in the ruck type changes because that is ****ing stupid.

I don't think we will lose against West Coast but it will be unbearably close. I have never felt so helpless as a supporter. Imagine excitedly waiting for the footy to start all summer and then you leave the ground after ROUND 2 with the realisation your coach won't make it. We have another 22 rounds to go!! **** me the only way to feel slightly better about this situation is if we get Warner or Pickett.

Your exact words in reply to me saying I think people are overreacting:

“This is why our club is the way it is - we accept mediocrity.”

You literally said my opinion is the reason FFC aren't good enough!
Upon reflection I agree I was strong and I apologise. Meant to say fans in general. Emotional after the game and I’m sorry.

Please tell me people don't actually think Erasmus should get dropped? The one criticism that's been prevalent is he doesn't get a consistent run of AFL games yet the moment he has a pretty decent game with a couple of mistakes you have people already calling for his head?

Treacy/Voss

Marks: 7/6
Contested marks: 2/0
Score involvements: 8/7
SI minus own score: 2/3

Voss will kick straight eventually, he has a two year contract and I'd expect him to spend all summer taking set shots if his season continues with five shots at goal for one goal scored.

One general play goal, four set shot misses.

If that clicks, good for us. I wish he had been better for us yesterday, but he is 21 and played 8 games.

I have to keep reminding myself, he has a lot of growth in him to come and he is already so far along the road.

If Voss takes contested marks and kicks half his set shots he will look a gun.
Also, people are ignoring the fact this was Voss’s first game for the season… remember how the rest of the team played last week in their first game?

(Same goes for Bolton - he had a shocker)

There aren't as many easy games as well now if you compare us to the rest of the comp.

We have stagnated while Hawks, Norf, Crows, Bombers have improved. Some of those latter 3 will be up and down a lot and we may spank them. But equally the bombers beat us last year and Norf the year before.
Crows have one player on their injury list. Kieran Strachan and he has been replaced with more promising your ruckman. If Strachan didn’t have a contract he would have been delisted.

I’d like to see more of North before stating they have improved.

In saying that Freo have gone no where.

Voss was chosen as relief ruck. He sucked at that to the point his 5min go at it in the second quarter was enough for it never to be repeated.

He also consistently got in the way of Amiss. That kick forward that he marked (I think from Ras) and had the chance seal the game was marked just in front of Amiss who was on the lead.

There were two times he marked on or just outside 50 and Amiss made a good lead with separation that he ignored. He then proceeded to put his hand up and point at the goals. Then kicked one that scraped through for a behind and another out on the full so badly it was about 15metres to the left of the behind post.

Erasmus has no awareness whatsoever, he's a bust. Pure and simple.

yeah maybe but it was better than Reidy playing..

I wouldn't drop Ras, he's cracking in and his kicking (remarkably off both sides) seems to have improved. His handballing may be the worst at AFL level I've ever seen though. He should just throw it every time and hope he gets away with it, probably less turnovers...

How is Rick not under heat for not laying a single tackle?

Cox is also in the gun for me. I think guys who don't put competitive efforts in should be dropped. None of these guys have really proven themselves as far as I am concerned.

Banfield didn’t lay one either

He still looked to slow for me but that 20m forward handball he did to Brayshaw led to one our goals

Why he can’t hit a simple target by hand is bewildering. I agree though he was pretty solid and far from the worst. In fact at the end of one of the quarters he stood his ground and took a solid hit from a hospital handpass. There are signs there.

He should copy his captain in freeing the arms. I remember Scott Thornton of all people skinniest bloke to play the game I reckon was really good at getting his arms up to dispose when being tackled.

For some stupid reason he never seems to get his arms up and it is why he gets caught HTB so much. Even that one where he got done in front of goals - at least he cracked in but if he gets the arms up he gives himself a chance to handball it out. Just seems to obvious that I hope the coaching staff are reviewing this.

He also directly cost us one handpassing to Jackson feet. It just mindblowing how bad it is. At least with Ras we know he's going to throw everything at the contest and stick tackles.

This is why our club is the way it is - we accept mediocrity. We haven’t won since July last year ffs!
I look at our last 6 losses. All teams made finals or were contending for finals.

Losing to west coast means 7 losses in a row and the worst loss out of 7 if it happens
