If you want to see the difference to defensive structure between Minson and Cordy, look how many slingshot goals that the Eagles got in Round 1 against us because they were able to crack open our zone to a slightly bigger extent than Richmond, Adelaide and Sydney managed to. The cracks in our defensive zone and structure get patched up with Cordy in the ruck even if we lose some contests in the middle. Footy tactics are evolving, and the role of the ruckman in ruck contests is becoming less significant than how they cover the ground - it's an extreme example but how else has Mark Blicavs played 50 games of AFL footy? Be glad for once we've got a coach, that's at the forefront of tactical innovation in our league rather than McCartney who insisted that winning the contested possession was the most vital tactic even though that logic was blatantly outdated by the time he was appointed as coach.

I'm not saying that Cordy deserves to retain his selection - he was god awful in the ruck especially in the first quarter - I'm saying don't be so dismissive in the logic as to which he was selected in the first place. There's not many blokes on AFL lists over 2 metres tall like him with comparable mobility and agility.
Good summation. Not sure Cordy is the player to play the role, just sure at this stage Minson and Campbell are not but need to work in the zone defensive structures in place and be more sure if being used in offensive transition particularly in dangerous places on the ground

On what basis? Have either demonstrated in the VFL their value in defensive structures and mobility? Have either demonstrated they bring more to the overall team than playing Roughy in the ruck with backup from Boyd and maybe a Hamling? Is Beverage changing his game structure to incorporate a pure centre bounce ruckman?
Roughead is doing well in the backline so keep him there , he also was pretty poor in the ruck his fitness isn't there at all he struggled to get to the contests around the ground , Cordy I won't even
Go there other than he is a dud , that leaves Minson and Campbell would love to see Campbell take the centre bounces then maybe push up to centre half foward

I have absolutely no idea how you could drop Honey after the weekend...
Or Stevens for that matter. Still not sure on Stevens becoming a regular but his last 2 games clearly have him in the best 22 at the moment

No changes.

Swans game may take a toll on the older boys but not the kids. There should be NO tired bodies umongst the kids this early, a game like that shouldn't effect them in round 5. those games take a toll on young teams in round 15, but not round 5. if it does, we are no where near fit enough, and you can forget any pipe dreams of 'finals' if the kids are that unfit. becasue we will fall on our asses by round 12 anyway, if that were the case.

But seeing as we have managed to maintain the pressure for 4 quarters in all but 1 game... i would say fitness is not an issue.

Sorry mate but those types of games affect the legs the following week at any time during the season.

But Campbell to CHF allows easy rebound from a dangerous area on the ground. Neither Minson or Campbell will generate enough dominance from stoppages to create significantly more score from stoppages than their defensive deficiencies in a zone, nor Minno's half dozen free kicks and turnovers in dangerous positions to justify their positions at this stage.

It is clear Beverage wants all players to play multiple positions so Roughy will have to develop further strings to fit into Bev's gameplan.

There is a clear move away from the pure ruckman. All of the top teams have mobile flexible rucks, for our gamestyle we need these to

We need a Campbell to take centre clearances push to chf then someone we draft to take that position your talking about to set up zones around the ground take boundary hit outs

Rough was entirely spent with 10 minutes to go in the last quarter

There is no way Cordys contributions to defensive structures compensates for the series of inevitable one way centre clearances.

Its Campbell or minnow
If Cordy deserved a crack than Campbell deserves one even more

It's time to release Tom

Hard player to replace due to his influence at the contest and with his breakaway speed. Wallis can hopefully come in and replace his efforts at the stoppages, maybe Grant comes back in to maintain speed of ball movement?

Jong to miss one or two. Z. Cordy and Daniel to be back in full training at the back end of this week. Didn't mention anything on Wallis so I imagine he's right to go this week soooo....

In: Wallis

Ah bad luck re Jong

In Hunter, minson(or Campbell) and Wallis

Smith stays in if Wallis not ready

Stevens has the vest

Out: Cordy Smith Jong (Inj)
In: Campbell Hunter Biggs

B: Roberts Roughead Wood
HB: Murphy Talia M Boyd
C: Webb Bont Macare
HF: Hrovat Crameri Hunter
F: Stringer T Boyd Dickson
Foll: Campbell Picken Dahl
INT: Honeychurch Stevens JJ Biggs
EMG: Dale Redpath Smith

Match ups:
Roberts - Riewoldt
Talia - Bruce
Roughie - Hickey

Would love to see Dale come in but if he dd would be sub which i don't like with first gamers. Believe smith needs a few more VFL games love this bloke but should have been in his element on the weekend that was his type of game. Hunter has been performing by all reports extremely well, Biggs was well reported to be best 22 pre-season time to give him a crack and offers flexibility to play multiple positions. Time to give Campbell a crack over Cordy, Thought about Roughie as 1st ruck but think we need him back this week and he can play on Hickey and go into the ruck with him. If Wallis is touch and go for saints I'd leave him for the Freo game. Would like to see Redpath get a crack and think he could help stretch saints down back but no one to really drop for him.

His tackle numbers aren't great, but with all our outs you would think Hunter gets a go.

Ahh sucks for Jongy and the team, he's been in ripping form. But look if the worst injury out of that huge game is a one to two week hand injury it's not the end of the world. Especialy considering how many guys are banging down the door at the moment, gives us a chance to see how another kid goes and gives Jongy a rest which he could probably use.

Agree with Dale in for the speed to cover Jong. Starting to get pretty thin in our inside stocks though so Smith is a must. Give him a break it's his third game back from a second knee FFS. He will only get better every week and what's the point of him going back to the VFL and dominating once again, and risking injury, just let him find his feet.
