Chase Pendles and it's war: Eddie

Remove this Banner Ad

I actually think that GWS will be desperate to get a big name star for next season. Ward and Scully wouldn't be known in GWS.

The added benefit of targeting Pendles is you'd stoke and Eddie vs Sheeds war, a Melbourne vs Sydney war, plenty of free publicity and "identity forming" for GWS.

Also, it makes it less like Bastinac or Goldy will go. And rips the guts out of a Woods team who have flogged us lately.

All behind this one.

Make no mistake GWS will target two clubs in particular next year: Collingwood and St Kilda. Both have had salary cap issues and have big name players out of contract.

Eddie and Collingwood would be extremely disappointed that the tightness of their salary cap was made public. I think everyone knew it was tight but not tight enough to make players like Leon Davis leave.

GWS will go after Collingwood and St Kilda players hard and try to break them. Make no mistake the Swan/Thomas/Pendelbury offers were designed to create friction in Collingwood's salary cap when in reality, Swan is too old for consideration for GWS. They drove up the price and made it more difficult for Collingwood. I expect them to target Pendelbury and Reid again, driving Reid in partiucular's salary up. How much further until Collingwood break, I don't know but it is going to get interesting.

Eddie knows this so it will get interesting. Not saying they will leave but the tension will be high until they sign and if they both sign on then someone else will likely depart as a sacrificial lamb.

Declaring war, and saying he's going to target their players at every opportunity....

I remembering that happening ~30 years back, Richmond and Collingwood went to 'war' in a similar way (without the salary cap). By the time it was over, Richmond was almost dead, Collingwood was on their knees, and the collateral damage led the VFL clubs to form the commision to save themselves from themselves.

Considering GWS is backed by the AFL, I don't like Collingwoods chances if it came to that (although the salary cap will probably make a bit it of a phoney war).

A war today between GWS and Collingwood probably is not the same as a war 30 years ago between Collingwood and Richmond.

Collingwood would knock over GWS before it started.

He's Collingwood's president. Just because he's more well known than most other presidents, and on a few tv shows (footy and non-footy), I don't understand why people are surprised by these reactions.

It's not meant to be a love in, it's all about beating all the other clubs in the competition. Which is exactly he reason that I wouldn't expect any supporters of other clubs to say anything other than "I hope he goes!".

As an aside, Fremantle has no relevance to this. Their current list/recent performance would have very little to do with when they were established. I wont get distracted by saying anything more about Freo (or Richmond!).

When Damien Barrett "revealed" that GWS had approached Todd Goldstein on The Footy Show Jimmy Brayshaw didn't crack the sads and act like a nong.

He said Todd had told the club of the approach, that club knew GWS would target good players and that we were doing everything we could to keep Todd and we were confident of doing so.

I like Eddie and he's done great things for the Woods but he occasionally has to stop and realise that at the end of the day, Collingwood is just another AFL club like the other 17.

Correct me if I'm wrong, aren't GWS replicating the 'Nathan Ablett Experiment' by signing up Pendlebury's brother purely as bait?

Good work again Mr President.

Jesus this joint makes me laugh at times.

To think there actually might be people ot there who want Scott Pendlebury to go to GWS just because Eddie what he said. Honestly I fear for the future of this country. What a bunch of absolute no life, no brian, no idea Muppets. This is what drives your hopes?

Pendlebury is going just like Swan & Thomas. Don't worry about who Collingwood need to keep, worry about who they target when free agency hits the AFL. Players haven't been shed because their salaries can't be accomodated, they have been shed to keep the loading up and open space down the track. There will be tears but they won't come from Westpc, Emirates, Lexus, CGU, McDonnalds, Sony, Adidas, Crazy John, How do you like our new athletics track land.

His comments about declaring war on GWS are clearly tongue in cheek. The Eddie haters need to get a grip and a sense of humour while they're at it.

Oh come on, stop making excuses for him. You can't tell me he's not pissed with the AFL for allowing the situation to arise.

He's just directing his ire at the AFL through GWS as he sees it as a vehicle of the AFL and not a real club so to speak.

I'm not going to debate whether he's got a point or not, it is what it is but I do think he's pretty self absorbed.

A very public profile seems to go hand in hand with this behaviour....... unbelievable isn't it.

If they're smart they wont even acknowledge it. Eddie's posturing over Malthouse the last couple of years amounted to nothing and I'd suggest these lastest comments will have no bearing on whether Pendelbury stays or goes.

I find it funny that he's publically attacked GWS when he really should be pulling Pendles aside and talking about things like loyalty, opportunity, facilities etc if he's worried he'll go.

This ^. Maguire,"If anyone approaches Malthouse we will sue!". Surely people must remember these huff and puff statements from the red faced one which were prevalent over the last 12 months. Where is Malthouse and half his coaching support staff now? Just hot air from Maguire.

Buckley might have a football brain.......but he is a tool. Dick, Davis, Pendlebury.........is only the start of the player exodus.

Can't imagine many of these still being around if those so called stars leave for GWS and Collingwood slip down the ladder ...

it's all pretty funny.

if i was pendles though i think i would be a bit pissed off. to think that Eddie is trying to stop him from maximising his earning potential in a job where you have a very limited shelf life.

I wonder what Melbourne thinks about his comments.

As do I.

Eddie's a joke, I'm sure our president is having a quiet laugh about him along with the other 16. He agreed to the rules and thought he was exempt

The language McGuire uses is pretty low and insulting. The way he describes GWS and then takes a cheap jab at Melbourne will win him no friends.

This 'siege mentality' that Collingwood seems to be putting themselves into will not work. Look at St.Kilda this year.

This 'us vs them' is a high risk strategy.

No its not it’s just you hate Collingwood, sorry don’t worry about it mate.. you're just like everyone else with PIES-SYNDROM

It'll pass - Now reality, I wouldnt expect anything else from MY club.

Short memory my friend....

His value lies in the fact he knows that is not the case.

If ... when ... Pendles goes he'll find out that even the mightiest kingdoms suffers reverses on the field of battle.

The omens don't look good for Collingwood. The jungle drums on Pendles are beating loud at the same time they did for Ablett and Scully.

He didn't take the chance to sign up away from the GWS window when he had it either.

It's just another blast of hot air. It plays well to the fans and contributes to the us vs them mentality the club is trying to cultivate. Good PR, nothing else.

That is a very good point. They will get a good player out of Collingwood by putting pressure on a few. I'm sure they'll be happy with Reid, if Pendlebury stays at Collingwood. In fact they'd be very happy with both Reids. A forwardline with S. Reid and Patton will be pretty handy in a few years time!!
