Let’s cut to the chase- can Hawthorn win a prelim in Sydney?

This thread will look a bit silly if Port beat the Hawks which is still possible despite their poor performance against Geelong.

I'm expecting Port to bounce back with a better performance and they usually aren't that easy to beat at their home ground.

The Hawks will still be favourites though, they are firm favourites with all the better agencies at the moment.

Ordinarily, the Port game could be viewed as a banana peel game for the hawks, who might have been seduced into thinking Port are an easy kill and subsequently get mugged by a proud team with a wounded pride. Unfortunately for Port fans there are three good reasons why this won’t happen;

1) Breust and Moore, two of our most highly respected players are playing milestone games this weekend, which is bad timing for Port, as their (the hawks) teammates will be pulling out all stops to ensure they are rewarded with a win. 2) Retribution for the previous encounter will factor heavily in the minds of the players, to the point where Mitchell won’t need to remind them. 3) In games where we have been hot favourites, we haven’t taken it easy, ask North. We respect every team we play and stick to the game plan.

Port, will win if they’re good enough, but I don’t think they are. So, that brings us to Sydney. Sydney killed us early in the year and have 5 top liners. The dimensions of the ground are similar to the MCG so space won’t pose a problem. What nobody has mentioned but is likely to work in Hawthorn’s favour is Sydney, by virtue of the pre finals bye will have only played 2 games in 4 weeks coming in. This is not the preparation you want for a cut throat game. Especially for a team that is a notoriously slow starter. If the hawk were to get out early, Sydney would have to revert to their reel in game. And that is a fraught way forward in September. Anyway, one week at a time and all that.

If Port lose, Ken cant keep his job, the recurring finals failures will be too great to ignore and change will be the only thing to quell the supporter outrage.

The Vic media have gone into bat for Ken like no coach before, he's one of them, can you really see them abandoning him now.
Whilst they'll talk up the Hawks, behind the scenes they'll be busy aligning the stars for Ken to get what he needs.
Kens h&a results are a cash cow for the AFL, 60k+ supporters subsidising a suburban SA club is too good to chance on an unknown replacement, a GF appearance for one of their own is a small price to pay to maintain the status quo with the added bonus of proving the feral Port fans wrong.

Stranger things have happened.

Of course they can. They aren’t cute and fun anymore, they’re a very, very good team that plays a style of footy that’s extremely hard to combat.

I’m not sure our forward line matches up particularly well against their backs, who, in my opinion, are the strongest part of their side. They hold up well defensively for their size and completely slice opponents apart on the rebound with their either their kicking game or running game. They make you defend the entire ground for long periods and then just throw heaps of pace on the ball.

Not sure that our key forward mix of Armarty, McLean, McDonald will be able to apply enough pressure on Sicily, Scrimshaw and Weddle for an entire match to effectively shut their game down. And once it gets going…nothing stops this train.

It's amazing how many clubs have had an off night/day against the Hawks since round 5. Listening to opposition coach press conference majority noted their side had an off day post match (Nicks, Voss, McRae, Bevo last night).

Kingsley was the only one who acknowledged actually Hawks might go ok both in their close loss in Tas and again when they beat us in Canberra. He's a class act.

Personally I hope the narrative of we had an off night continues long into the future, under estimate us and results are starting to speak for themselves.
Cats didn't have an off day down in G-Town! 😅

The question is, was it the Hawks who had an off day!? 🤔

Do you live in a faraday cage?

Yeah they can.
Sydney's midfireld carries them from the little I've seen, the backline and forward line are nothing special.
Hawks would still need to play at their best to beat them though, Sydney are still a formidable team and deserving of the minor premiership.

Yes, but they also respond when Kens job is on the line, like 13 straight last year and after the Lions game booing 2 months ago.
No one expected us to make the 8 and yet we finished 2nd.

Thursday was as bad a performance as Ive seen in a while, but it was also not a career deciding game for Ken as they have a 2nd chance.
From now on its cut throat, Kens time at Port is in the hands of the players who obviously want him so dont be suprised if they 'play for keeps'.

I'd go as far as to say they left plenty in the tank knowing they have already taken care of their remaining 3 opponants since rd10.

If playing for a spot in a PF is not enough and players need Ken’s job on the line ‘to get up for the game’ it would explain why they’ve been so terrible in finals for so long.

Unfortunately cats haven't had an off day against the Hawks since 2008.

As to your question, I'm leaning towards yes on the basis of the AFL scheduling the Hawks for a Sunday twighlight fixture in Perth before heading down the highway next round.

Exactly this.

If the Hawks can hard tag 2 of Heeney, Warner and Guilden, then they should win the game. I don't know why other teams have not done this throughout the year? Maybe they did and that was why the Swans fell off a bit the past few months. But they are carried so hard by these 3 players that limiting their impact will be the way the Hawks can beat them.

Yeah, well I'm going with Geelong's loss to St. Kilda at Marvel as being an off day owing to having played Freo in Perth the week before.

The next time our clubs meet, which is hopefully on the last day in September, there should be no excuses. You win if you're good enough.
