why are we assuming they will want to go home? judd wanted to yes...mckinley etc wanted to go because they were fringe players and want more play time. people need to stop overemphasising this go home factor.

the way people are talking about this, if this was 2001 as opposed to 2010, people would have prefferd us have taken Polak over Judd. draft best and if they want to go, then we get something in return. draft local and shite, all we will be left is nothing.

Exactly. If we draft someone, they help us win a premiership, play some of the best games/seasons anyone in an Eagles jumper has ever done and then bugger off, I'm not too fussed.

A player is like an investment, and what Judd contributed to West Coast is probably more than anyone, Winning a premiership and a Brownlow plus numerous B+F's before leaving for good value in return (hypothetically with draft picks.) I Don't mind where there from if they can play

Our most important player in our team I think with all the zones and that these days is Shannon hurn. When he gets the ball it opens up the play and creates something. Take away hurns kick and I believe he would just be an average player. If heppell has as good a kick as hurn which is what some people compare to, and then ad more speed, more endurance, height, jump, hands and so on than hurn, imagine how good he could be for us.
We really miss hurn when injured, heppell could cover when that happens, and would be awesome with both out there.

Pretty crucial typo there ^ "Impotent" means ineffective.

I am suddenly very keen on Smith, if he had above average to elite footskills I'd have him top 3. His kicking from what I've seen can be a bit hit and hope, but we'll see. If we weren't overstocked with outside mids I'd love him.

Very keen on Andreoli too.

Don't you mean inside mids? Eagles have too many in and under players atm - outside mids who carry are what WC are looking for. That's why the Polec debate is still going.

Sorry, yes I did. :p Brain fade there. Indeed, we have two many. Smith I feel would be better than a number of the ones we've already got aswell.

Gaff... easily.

EDIT... Polec looks pretty good though....

Polec does look awesomely exciting, he's the exciting type that we need. Despite him being a run a carry type
player, he's very tough and a fierce competitor. He could do a lot of damage on the wide expanses of Subi.

This.
Those who have watched him a fair bit say his skills are good.
Quick, evasive, goal kicking wingman who has already proved himself against men rather than boys.
Pick him up!

Gaff looks like the best player available at no.4, I have no problem with us taking the young Vic boy, if he has the abillity to do well from the get go thats what we need, we don't want him learning bad habits off Masten, Swift and Ebert though.

What a pile of uneducated cr@p. Pretty sure Masten was one of the preseason stars, gunnning the endurance tests and doing well on the training track -terrible habits!

Now the question I have is, can Gaff potentially add a bit of 'Polec-ness' to his game?

Gaff is already quick and (mainly) an outside mid. But, against Polec, he's a better overall decision maker/user of the footy, has elite endurance and is an absolute ball magnet.

If Gaff can add to his game the same kind of run-and-carry that Polec provides then he becomes a pretty complete package. But again, the question is, does he have the potential to add this to his game?

If you work the other way. Can Polec add consistency, endurance and polish to his often hypo playing style?
Polec doesn't lack intensity, Gaff could learn to tackle.

This.
I think it's much easier to to add consistency, endurance and decision making through experience and training rather than adding pace and flair, which are very natural traits.
Gaff may have done well in the sprint tests, but he isn't a quick player. He isn't going to break lines or burst away from packs.
Polec might not have the consistent disposal of Gaff, but he has much better distance and penetration. He also tends to kick more goals.

Although, one of the standout features of Gaff that can be seen on his highlight videos is his goal-kicking. He seems to be very smart in pushing forward to the right spots and looks a very tidy shot at goal on the run.

This might be true, but Polec averaged a goal a game in the U/18 champs (5/5), as well as more than a goal a game in his SANFL seniors games (16/14). It is certainly in his repertoire.
He was listed at 184cm a year ago, and he's 188cm now, so he could grow in to a handy height at around 190cm, similar to Embley.
Would be great to be in Mainy's number 3, streaming down the wing.

Taking Gaff makes sense just as everyone thought it made sense for Freo to take Rich, but they took the risk and reaped the rewards. Given our current crop of ballwinning mids/accumulators and our lack of outside pace, i think it makes sense to take a similar risk. Polec for me.

Yep, reminds me of Swan when he goes forward, often gets on his own in space and solid in front of the sticks.

I'm surprised the Swan comparison hasnt come up very often with Gaff, but i have noticed comentators dont tend to like linking draftees with the current flavour of the month player

I want to barrack for Polec next year. I miss excitement machines like Sampi and Judd. Naitanui is quelling me a little. I just hope WC rate him as the best available.
