Chris Judd and Nathan Buckley: Who's better at their best

Remove this Banner Ad

I'm laughing at people who think Judd was easily the better footballer.

Lets see him get 40 odd touches in a basket base of a side multiple times.

Thre isn't a lot in it at all.

If Bucks didn't leave Brisbane and won the flags, you'd all say him.

In 2003, Buckley averaged 27 possessions per game, led the league in clearances at 7.1 per game and this was all while being the best field kick in the league by a fair margin. Anybody suggesting Buckley was a receiver has no idea what they're talking about.

IMO, that shades Judd's best by a small margin.

Where did you get the clearances stats from?

Could you please look up Judd's averages in 2006 for clearances and contested possessions and let me know? Thanks.

the answer to the question is laughably easy

AT HIS BEST judd produced things on the football field unlike any other player past or likely for a long time in the future definately better than buckley by a decent margin i'd say. I mean you can put buckley together with many other brownlow winners as great players eg Hird, Voss etc but Judd had capabilities that set him apart from all of them.

however it is clear that judd is now a shadow of his former self and very doubtful to reach those heights again.

a few good seasons does not a champion make so over the course of their whole career it will probably be quite close.

This is another of the urban myths relating to Buckley. Buckley was outstanding as the kicker able to kick 50 metres plus at Collingwood but there would be at least one at every club that would have been as good or better and there are several current players clearly better than Buckley with foot skills.

Buckley took plenty of shots from around 50 metres but did not have an outstsanding conversion rate.

On pur stats your figures from 2003 for Buckley represents clearly his best statistical year but Judd's season 2006 is comparable and the stats do not show the impact of Judd's superior run.

Buckley's best is not as good as Judd's best.

as a collingwood supporter i have a biased towards buckley however i am a massive judd fan. in saying that the two are not comparable as most players are not. the two played different roles albeit both in the midfield. it is too hard because they each have there admirable qualities. you could compare judd to someone like deledio (not syaing he is anywhere near judd) because they have many of the same attributes and play a similar role and have a similar body type. (btw i think deledio has the ability to be like judd). Buckley was a better kick and his ability to rack up possession is probabaly second to only scott west (given this was before possession footbal: harder to get the pill). judd was better in contested situation but not saying buckley was a slouch. judd better footspeed. buckley better grab. judd in team of stars, buckley stand alone. this could go on all day because there are so many positives for both. both greats playing a different role

at their respective bests?
Judd

trouble is, i saw buckley at his best for 10 years. I saw Judd at his for 2. he'll never be what he was at west coast, and while he's very good now, i'd take bucks' best over Judd @ Carlton. And whilst i'm a collingwood supporter, thats still a shame, because the best of Judd was the best i'd seen, so it's gutting that injury took that unbelievable speed burst away. whats left is still unbelievable class. but Bucks had weapons that Judd doesn't have, and he used them 30 times a game for ten years.

Buckley's best attribute was his kicking. Outstanding distance and penetration. He was good in the middle, but also very damaging as a medium forward. Never that convinced about his leadership - wasn't so popular among his Collingwood team-mates, and was frequently seen giving team-mates an on-field blast. A very good, consistent player, but never reached superstar status, and never achieved any success at Collingwood. If he stayed at Brisbane, he would have got 3 flags. :)

parrot, hurry up and list your club as anyone who plays collingwood.

Bucks was hugely popular at collingwood, by all who remained at the club, besides a much publicised rift between he and paul williams i don't know what you're referring too. I love when people latch on to stereotypes and stop watching football. Buckley's leadership qualities were brought into question from day 1, much as his ability to be an inside mid was questioned at the beginning of his career. The absolute stubborness and determination of the man had him apply himself like noone in the history of the black and white to become a hard midfielder who could win his own ball.
And become a better leader, nobody captained the club in more games then he, and anybody watching collingwood games since 02 when he led us to the finals, would know he became the 2nd greatest captain of the era behind Voss.
He did reach the elite status, and was viewed by many to be the best collingwood player ever.
stop speaking garbage. are you called parrot because you repeat the thoughts of the biased media from 1999?

judd, wins alot of contested ball
can kick goals
runs all day.

i know buckley could aswell but i would prefer a 100% judd then a 100% bucks.

Translation: I hate Judd. I've seen it in multiple threads.. this is just the latest comical installment.

Bucks was a very gifted natural footballer, though I would rather Judd in my team due to his superior clearance/contested possesion ability. I would rather a fully fit and in form Judd than any midfielder of the last 20 years.

Very reasonable. Judd has not produced his best yet for Carlton; but at WCE he had a patch that is better than Buckley's 'best' by quite some measure.

Having said that...

Judd's Best @ WCE > Buckley's Best through his career > Judd's Best @ Carlton (so far)

Judd played his best football at West Coast. Wayne Carey played for Adelaide, but he'll always be a North Melbourne footballer. Judd will always be the West Coast superstar.

yes it's true that judd has played his best football so far at west coast but i can guarantee there are still people a lot of people voting for bucks because they hate carlton so much.

oh, and judd will not always remain the west coast superstar, his best is yet to come.

Lawl. His best is not yet to come.

At the very best, he'll replicate his best form at West Coast. But I doubt it.

if you don't act biased for a minute, i reckon you'll agree with me.

he had no pre-season this season. he had major groin surgery which has hampered everyone who has had it for their first year (brown, voss, aker etc.) he was visibly no running at full speed till the bulldogs game in about round 18 i think in which he comfortably chased down griffen and he kept improving from there.

this year, because he didn't have the luxury of relying on his speed and power, he was forced to further a develop an already great inside game to a level which probably hasn't been achieved since diesel stopped playing. when he returns to full speed and power next year, and can add his improved inside game to his outside game he will regain his title as unanimously the greatest player of his era (well maybe that's stretching it).

also, this year he had crap ruckwork to rove and with the addition of warnock and the development of hampson and kreuzer he will have more luck in this department. with the return of hadley, he will have another player who knows how to block for him not to mention that all of his other teammates will have a better understanding of his game and vice versa.

and finally, our other midfielders such as gibbs, murphy, walker, grigg, etc. will all improve and will help get some of the attention off him.

and let's not forget he wasn't all bad this season, he still managed AA captain (yes it was contentious but there are no standouts for this position), he got 16 brownlow votes (i thought he deserved 14), and he won our b&f (not a bad achievement given he was up against a bloke who kicked 99 goals).

i hope i have in some way convinced you he will be much better next season.

......I didn't say he wouldn't be better next season than this season. I said he wont be as good as he was at West Coast.

What a waste of a post that was.
