Chris Judd - Greatest player of the 21st Century (so far)

Agree with whoever said Cousins was better than Judd.

Cuz was an absolute machine, would take him over Judd any day of the week.

That is possibly the worst post I have ever read on BF. On what grounds was Cousins a better player than Judd ??? I suspect you have a bitter anti Carlton chip on your shoulder

Best and fairests? Judd ahead.
All Australians? Judd ahead.

How about we rank them by individual season?

1. Ablett (2009)
2. Judd (2006)
3. Ablett (2010)
4. Judd (2004)
5. Ablett (2008)
6. Ablett (2007)
7. Judd (2011)
8. Ablett (2011)
9. Judd (2010)
10. Judd (2009)
11. Judd (2005)
12. Judd (2008)
13. Judd (2007)
14. Judd (2003)
15. Ablett (2005)
16. Ablett (2006)
17. Ablett (2004)
18. Judd (2002)
19. Ablett (2003)
20. Ablett (2002)

Ablett 4 of the 6 seasons, Judd 9 of the top 14 seasons. Might argue with the order of some of the seasons but from 9 down it's pretty clear cut that Judd dominates.

The fact you rate Ablett's 2011 season below Judd's and the fact they played in different positions until 2007 is why this is a joke. Not to mention Ablett got drafted and played at 17.

If you watched Ablett in 011 you would have seen how he dominated Gold Coast's games and still dominated statistic categories, despite being in the worst team.

How quickly we forget.

Chris Judd was a:
Dual best and fairest (2004, 2006 in a premiership team)
Dual All Australian (2004, 2006)
Norm Smith medalist in a losing side (2005)
Premiership captain (2006)
Brownlow Medalist (2004)
AFLPA Best 1st Year Player (2002)
AFL Goal of the Year (2005)

All while Ablett was an effective if consistent half forward flanker.

Ablett is the better player. He is absolutely magic in the midfield and up forward, no other player like him. Judd looks like he is breaking down while Ablett looks like he could go for another 10 years.

Personal opinion. Cousins is one of my favourite players to ever play; I think you may be forgetting just how good he was.

I believe I've posted more justification in favour of Judd than anybody has for Ablett.

Why is Judd's reign as the game's most dominant player so conveniently ignored? Is it because it happened 5 years ago, when Ablett was merely a decent HFF?
Ablett has been the best midfielder in the AFL for four years. His reign as the best midfielder has been longer than Judd's.

Say what?

Swan was the best mid in 2010, Ablett was more of a HF.

Not my usual domain to try to pump up Judd's tyres, but the fact he has been at the top of his game for longer is an important factor that people are ignoring.

If you go back and rate their seasons....even though for the last few years you may rate Ablett a 10 and Judd a 9, but back in 2004 Judd was already producing 9 or 10s whilst Ablett was still producing 3 or 4s.

That is why Judd is (so far) the best player of the 21st century

Hey op, how many individual awards or even better, brownlow's did Carey, Ablett or Matthews win and Judd isn't even within a bees dick length of any of them.

Please man. Just stop.

Cousins was a 6 x All Australian, 4 x Best & Fairest, MVP winner & a Brownlow medalist all by 28. He was more of a pure footballer than Judd as well. Also ranked the 42nd greatest EVER footballer to play by Sheehan a few years ago.

Just stop.

Pretty amazing that Ablett and Swan averaged the same amount of possessions then (31.5). Also polled more Brownlow votes which is a "midfielders award", so safe to say he was a midfielder who spent some time up forward. Then when you consider their similar stats and Ablett's 1.8 goals a game to Swan's 0.9, I reckon it's reasonable to say that Ablett was the best mid in 2010. Opinion of course, but I don't think you can just discount Ablett for "being a HF" when his efforts in the midfield at least matched Swan's.

"Greatest player of the 21st century"... it's kind of a broad term. Some will argue that the greatest player is one who has consistently performed at a high level and who has the greatest career accomplishments and accolades. The accolades and achievements that players such as Judd, Black and even Riewoldt will all read incredibly impressively for years to come. I can see why others (particularly fellow Carlton supporters) will be arguing the case for Judd. He has performed brillaintly for almost 10 years, consistently among the top echolen of AFL midfielders.

However, to me at least, the term 'Greatest player of the 21st century" doesn't make me think about who has had the greatest decade of achievements. It makes me think about which player reached the highest peak and stayed there for years upon years. The answer has to be Gary Ablett junior. He has been, arguably, the best player in each season for five years. Judd can't claim that. No one bar Ablett can claim that. He has performed amazingly and his feats over the past 5 seasons will contribute to sitting alongside his dad, Mathews and Carey in the eyes of fans across the sport. We are witnessing a phenomonal footballer at the moment, one who will go down as a legend and the greatest player of this era.

Bollocks.
Ben Cousins should be ranked with the Luke Power/Scott West type of player, club champions but not all time greats of the game.

Simon Black has had a more consistent and decorated career then Cousins.
I don't know how to take your views on Judd seriously when you have proven to be an ardent Carlton hater

Ablett is the best player of the 21st century. He is the elite of the elite.

Judd is not that far behind him, but Ablett's best is unbeatable.

Must mention though that Franklin is mowing them down pretty quickly. He will pass Judd and is 50/50 whether he will catch Ablett

Can I also mention Carlton were a basketcase for nearly a decade before Judd arrived and now we are a regular finals contender.
West Coast fell apart in the first couple of years without Judd.
Geelong now are arguably a better team without Ablett.

And in terms of leadership, Judd is a far more professional and dedicated captain @ Carlton then Ablett is @ Gold Coast. There was good reasons why Bomber Thompson never made Ablett captain, he does not have great leadership qualities like Judd

Ben Cousins = 6xAA, 4x B&F, Brownlow medalist, MVP winner by 28 ffs.

Simon Black = 3xAA, 3x B&F, Brownlow medalist, Norm Smith Winner.

Going by cold, hard facts, Cousins is more decorated. Just please stop telling lies. Please stop telling lies.

Like I said, amongst the football community, Cousins is an all time great. Ranked the 42nd greatest player EVER to play by Sheehan. Not many would argue.

Ablett and Judd both amazing footballers but I would go to war with Judd first. He often has players hanging off him and still pulls away with the ball while Ablett gets fed more. Judd does the harder stuff which I rate very highly in such a brutal sport and also brings other players into the game.

Hodgie has to be up there too. His ability to play well when injured is unsurpassed and he's a great team player.

That's why Carey and Leigh Matthews were the best - tough as nails and could win matches on their own.

Looks like some of you bigfooty fans only remember Judd as a carlton player, or are only judging this based on 07 onwards. Remember Judd made a greater impact on games in the eagles midfield from 01-06 and won the brownlow, norm smith and premiership while Ablett was playing in the forward pocket

Very well said. Cousins was an all round gem and was the reason they won the premiership. It was such a shame to see him get on the drugs as he probably would have achieved more.

Carlton only contended in finals this year. What are Judd's leadership qualities really? Seems that there has been some discomfort over the decisions of Judd as captain and questions over his abilities as a leader too.

Adam Goodes has been as good as Judd...

Judd have always been part of a trio or more of star midfielders....

Goodes has been a star ruck man and can be placed any position in the field and be a star.
