Whoa, not so fast champ!
First we need Cookie Monster to conduct another “health check”.
In all seriousness though, I used to be sooo invested in the Cats. Forked out for premium memberships for a decade plus, upgraded seats at away games, watched every min of every footy show. Hardcore. I ended up ditching the membership post 2017. This is actually the first time in goodness knows that I’m actually even posting on here, even logged in to be honest. Anyways, I can honestly say Chris Scott is the single biggest reason (but not only) for extinguishing the flame that once burned for the Cats. His brand of footy is s**t to watch, has been for years, he treats supporters in a condescending manner with his “its too hard to explain to the lay supporter” nonsense. Quite frankly, I find him an arrogant, condescending smartest guy in the room prick. But that is my subjective opinion.
What isn’t subjective is his finals record. In the end, I found that life can actually be much happier when your less engaged. I suspect some will head down this path shortly in a similar manner. For others, I understand the passion is too hard to break. My point is, footy can actually seem a lot more important than it really is. Don’t waste too much emotion on something that agitates you more than gives you enjoyment. If you are at that point, it’s not healthy. There are plenty of hobbies people could enjoy that they never discover because they waste time on other things. Don’t let footy control your emotions. Find other outlets to give you satisfaction.
What the Chris Scott era has given me is a wonderful appreciation for what the Bomber T era delivered. He is a man of many flaws Bomber, but what he had in abundance was passion. And it reflected in his team and the way they played. I firmly believe teams play in their coaches image, and we have today what we have today. Anyways, the Bomber era was also a different time in the sport, pre free agency, expansion, ultra PC craziness etc. I liked that time, but things change, and what was once ain’t returning, so I’ve mostly moved on... and life is great, even after a game like tonight.
I think I’m at this point as well. Unfortunately last night I just reached the point where I got no enjoyment out of the game. I found myself getting angry and emotional and it just isn’t worth it any more. The worst part was that we stayed just close enough to keep our hopes up, only to have Collingwood crush them again and again. I will watch next week’s game with no expectations and no hope, therefore I shan’t be disappointed.
My cousins are die hard Carlton fans and in some ways I envy them because they reached the point where they find comedy in their side’s shitness long ago.
I don’t want to renew my membership next year but I will as my dad and partner are keen to. Dollars down the drain.
