Oppo Camp Non Geelong football (AFL) discussion 2024, Part 2

With Daniher retired, only 3 teams who made finals in 2024 will enter the 2025 season with a key forward who kicked more than 45 goals in the previous season (Curnow at Carlton, Cameron at Geelong and Hogan at GWS).

There's a lot of 2025 finals contenders now with KPF issues, including five of the 2024 finalists:

Brisbane (Hipwood is a B-grader and they have no one else)
Sydney (Amartey and McDonald are unreliable and yet to have breakout seasons)
Port Adelaide (Georgiades has injury issues, Marshall is inconsistent, and Dixon is cooked)
Hawthorn (Lewis is perennially injured and Dear is still a kid)
Western Bulldogs (Ugle-Hagan and Darcy could be superstars admittedly but they're not proven yet, and Naughton is erratic and overrated)

Then there's the teams looking to bounce back into the eight who also have KPF issues:

Collingwood (Mihocek is just a good honest battler and they have nothing beyond him)
Fremantle (Treacy and Amiss are very exciting talents but aren't A-graders yet)
Essendon (Wright sucks)
St Kilda (Max King is not a player who can be trusted to kick straight or stay healthy)
Melbourne (have nothing)

Interesting times for forward structures across the comp.

Hey now, if Sydney could just play Adelaide every week Amartey would be the best forward in the comp. Would get to 99 goals before he gets dragged.

Feel like you have missed a few players who were KPF this year though.
Brisbane probably have to play Fort more often unless they bring someone in via the draft. They do have a couple of rookie tall KPF but who knows how good they are.
Sydney Amartey kicked 43 this season including finals, McDonald 37 so they are both not that far off that 45+ and they both can improve next season.
Port Georgiades kicked 44 and only played 20 games, if he gets his body right he will kick 45+ next year. Dixon I am fairly sure has retired, but they have Finlayson to return and they probably will sink games into Lord and see if he fills the gap.
Hawthorn You left out Chol who kicked 37 this year as a KPF, 200cm tall.
WB JUH kicked 43 so he wasn't far off joining the 45 goals club, Darcy I think has a break out season next year and might kicked 45+. Had 2 seasons to find his feet, this year kicked 38.23 from 21 games. Wonder if they persist with Naughton forward or put him as a tall winger/defender.

As for the teams outside the 8, Pies have Mihocek, Cox is forward more often then ruck and they added McStay who had an injury plagued season but at 195cm he is taller than Mihocek and plays more like a KPF.

Treacy kicked 45 from 20 games and Freos season fell apart when he got injured, but then it will be interesting to see if he builds on that or teams "work him out". Freo also might have Jackson forward more often too if Darcy isn't cooked. But lets be honest Darcys body is cooked.

Essendons key forward is Langford, Wright only played 14 games, and next year Bombers will sink games into Caddy who plays tall too.

Saints are boned, Kings body is never right, 12 games this year, 11 last year, kicked 52 in 2022 so the talent is there but he is brittle. If the rumour of Membrey leaving for Essendon is true it means he has no one to take the 2nd best tall defender as well, meaning he is likely to get smashed next year. Saints are in trouble unless they trade in someone else as a KPF.

Demons have Van Rooyen and Petty. No wonder all the fantasy trades have us giving up Neale to the Dees they will literally take anyone 200cm or taller who can play forward.

McDonald doesn't look very promising in my opinion. I know he's still young but for a top 10 pick, he is underwhelming.

Lacks jumping ability, kicking penetration and at this stage, more suited as a defender if anything.

Pies- I won't give up on seeing a good season out of McStay, if he can STAY away from injury
Blues- also have Harry McKay, who was awfully close to your 45 goals.

If you’re banking on McStay to be your gun tall forward then you’re in real trouble. His best return in his entire career is 28 goals and he’s turning 30 next year.

He's been a KB for a lot of his career.

McStay should easily slot 40+ next year.
Should and will is completely different

If he stays fit all year maybe he can kick 40+ but most likely he will kick around 25-35 depending on fitness if he stays fit 35ish should be doable if not 25 or less looks likely.

Also should easily implies that he will kick well passed 40 and not just 41-45 easily would mean 50-60+

I Iook at their midfield and can easily see McStay being targeted frequently. 45 goals is my tip.
Mihocek will also have another solid season.

Pies will be back to their best just as we were this year after having a downer after winning a flag.

I don’t think they will their midfield was significantly slow and ineffective this year imo and I don’t see that changing next year
