Genuine hypothetical question for the Chris Scott haters: If he were to change nothing structurally, and we continue with our shaky post-bye and finals performances, but we somehow win a premiership this year or in the next two years of his contract, would you forgive him? Or still want him out?

If he continues to get us into finals then it's possible we can luck ourselves into a premiership eventually. Even this year, if we'd fallen over the line against Collingwood we probably could've managed getting into the GF, only having to face GWS/Brisbane in a prelim. Then, once we're in a GF, anything can happen, really.

Moot point. He won’t.

Didn’t feel like that at the ground in the last 10 -15 minutes. Actually felt like we might get up and pinch it if it hadn’t been such an unusually short final quarter. Would have been a travesty as we were completely outplayed, but that’s how close we got. Nail a couple of the sitters we missed on the night and who knows. That’s why you’’d have to fancy tigers to win easily against the pies. We were so ordinary and got that close.

That’s absolutely true. Had hawk and Rohan kicked truly early we’d have won but you could feel how it was going and it was going against us and it was ridiculously hard to get clean entries. Why is that?

Been that way for a long time..its take years to get to this stage but I think the bottle has finally stopped spinning when it point at him... It will not be the kiss of death but maybe the certainly the loss of face ... in this finals.as it stands I think he has lost more than even the losing coaches at Ess and the Dogs .. and he still is in it.
Its seems its time to rewritie of song cause we dont play the way it should be played anymore...

been hearing logic like this since 2012 ... and really what he have now seen is you get to the finals and fail that you use up credits. In a way Chris has been a more successful version of Brad.. but both may end up not really being rated as coaches.

Very sage TC.

Don’t think Brad will coach again. Something is missing in the wheelhouse. Was not a liked coach at North as far as I can tell and Chris has arrived at that same point sort of overnight. Building for a while then boom, just VDubs manning the barricades. Did Ayres go the same way? Very sad to hear Blighty left because we booed him. Am wondering if we’ll look back at this period and miss it with Chris as well. It’s been extraordinary that we’ve stayed up. Maybe that’s the problem.

Opinions can't be wrong...It's just an opinion.
And you're welcome to it.

Opinions most definitely can be wrong.
Most of cynical’s are, and this is no different.

Every year his assessment of the list and the cries that we’ll take a fall with a rubbish list are sensationally proven to be wrong.

Bring him in for Matty Knights?

Matty Knights should go been doing stuff all never gets talked about VFL 2012-2014 the AFL Midfield since 2015. Light a fire under him it all starts in the midfield and every final we are rubbish in the midfield needs to be cleaned out.

Love Nigel Lappin but since ( 2009 ) does he need a new challenge.

James Rahilly good bloke forwards coach been around since 2010 with the senior mob.

Chop 2 of 3 probably keep lappin premiership pedigree and the most respected AFL player amongst that group

Yep, our forward line was so crowded-there wasn’t any space. Presumably, partly as a consequence of our slow ball movement-pies were not troubled to get back there. Sometimes it looked like every player was in our forward half. Didn’t look like that up the pie’s end.
Yet we never seemed to have players free and they had free players all over the place. I kept thinking they had 5 more players on the field than us-lol.

Get the feeling the media may sniff blood soon

Unless you can reveal exactly which players we missed out on when we selected-
Stanley
Smith
SS
Danger
Tuohy
Dahl
Rohan
who were all established players and able to assist in areas of need, and having knowledge of what we were getting with them, then it is still a worthwhile venture.
The speculative picks we gave up- what are they now doing, and who are they?

Took me a while, but I eventually figured it out. So many machinations involved (Hendo included too)

Stanley & Cunico - Hugh Goddard (delisted, picked up by Carlton)
Smith - Mackenzie Willis (delisted), Sam Collins (traded Collins pick to Freo, delisted, then, ironically picked up by Gold Coast last year)
Scooter - Free agent (compo pick - Luke Partington, delisted)
Henderson - Jarrod Berry
Danger - Milera, Gore (delisted, back at Geelong VFL, Troy Menzel (delisted)
Tuohy & Fogarty - Smedts (delisted), Cameron Polson & Zac Bailey
Dahl - Free agent (compo pick - Rhylee West - father son selection)
Rohan - Marty Hore

**********

Only one I truly regret, is Henderson in for Berry. Hendo was handy at the time time though, so I can't complain too much. We've done well with everything else though. I wouldn't have minded Marty Hore instead of Rohan, but not much chance we would have selected him anyway with a speculative late pick.

All good points.
The era is nearly at an end, GAJ, Selwood, Hawkins, Taylor will all be gone in a season or 2, if not before. There will be plenty of time in the future to go back to that traditional list building way of doing things, like the Lions seem to be doing, but that is a tough, long process, again with no guarantees of success as defined by most here who equate success with flags, or at worst, GF's. I still think it was rational and worthwhile going for those players we did top up with, as they were all proven needs based players.
I might be stubborn, but I was very happy the years those players were selected, all of them except perhaps Tuohy and Rohan.

They weren't all proven. Scott Selwood's past was already well behind him - he couldn't get a game at West Coast. They knew he was on the slide. Gary Rohan has been a perennial disappointment. Pretending he was the answer to any problem is disingenuous as he's never delivered ever.

that's 1 year

where are the rest?

the bookies had us borderline for finals and there is a fair bit of variance with ladder finishes

us going out in straight sets shows how mediocre we are
I’m glad you asked! It’s the same every year.

This is the best one. 2015 where you were wrong in the other direction:
7th Clark will help a fair bit but our midfield sucks
2016:
last year was bad and expected to be, this year its flag or bust

- added heaps of depth
- plenty of players coming back from injury
- mid tier group in ghs, caddy, guthrie, thurlow should be hitting their prime
- added depth means our bottom 6 players are quality instead of first year players (or has beens)
- easiest draw of all time
- suspended players hurts port and the bulldogs
- hawthorn are significantly weaker (especially with roughie to miss half the year)
- besides hawthorn there aren't any standout teams
- bench restrictions should help us considering we have experienced but slowish tall defenders (easier to defend when players aren't as fresh), mobile rucks, + blicavs
- josh walker will never again play ruck for us
2017:
- Will we make Finals in 2017? nope 13th
- Who will retire end of 2017 (or during 2017)? Mackie and Loners
- Who could be traded out end of 2017? Motlop, the others will be delisted
- Who will win our B&F? Danger
- Who will be our most improved youngster (someone under 23 years of age)? Lang
- Which of our new TRADE recruits will improve us the most (Tuohy/Black)?
- Which of our new draftees (Parfitt, Stewart, House, Zuthrie, Henry, Jones, Ratugolea, Narkle, Simpson, Abbott, O'Connor) will develop/show the best signs in 2017 whether that be in the VFL or the AFL side?
- Will Chris Scott be coaching Geelong at the end of the season? hope not
- Will the Harry Taylor experiment up forward work? no
- What will the Ruck setup be? Smith/Stanley/Blicavs in the midfield
2018:
Having done a lot of analysis on each of the lists it has become apparent we likely wont be making finals this year.

1. Compared to the other clubs we really lack top end talent.

I rate us as having 2 genuine A graders which is the worst in the competition. If people want to count Henderson and Hawkins as A graders we are still way short of the top clubs.

2. The rising teams

Collingwood, Port, Essendon, GC, StKilda and Melbourne have all made significant improvements in the off season. They also have natural improvement from having young talented lists. We went backwards slightly.

3. Our huge home ground advantage

A blessing and a curse, last year we had 8 home games and won 7 only losing to the Swans.

This year we get 7 home games, 3 of them are against GWS, Sydney and the Bulldogs. If we win 1 of those games and all the rest that is 5 home wins compared to 7 last year.

4. No 3rd man up

Smith and Stanley are serviceable rucks but thats all they are. It’s a big help when against a Goliath they have Blicavs coming in from the side.

How will they go against Gawn, Goldy, Sandilands, Grundy etc? Probably not great.

5. Teams implementing faster ball movement

We all know Chris Scott loves his tall slow back line. It works great at Kardinia Park when teams dont have as much room to move and kick the ball in long.

However with the success of the Bulldogs more teams have been trying to move the ball on quick and quick ball movement exposes our back line.

6. New look Back line

No Enright and no Taylor.

Henderson has been there a year. Thurlow back from a knee injury. Stewart coming from the VFL.

A solid back 6 who have played a lot of games together is the foundation of good sides.

Ours has some good players but they are still new to each other. Cant expect them to be a solid cohesive unit straight away.

7. Dysfunctional forward line

Harry Taylor, Aaron Black, Rhys Stanley are any of these guys going to be a genuine tall option?

Is Hawkins playing 22 games this year? What if he gets injured?

Is Menzel playing 22 games?

Is McCarthy?

Gregson is already injured

8. Great inside mids poor forward entries

We have 2 of the best inside mids in the game and some good serviceable players in there like Menegola, S Selwood, Blicavs, GHS.

The problem is our forward entries are hideous.

Besides GHS (who doesnt get games) these guys have pretty average foot skills and with our lack of targets, bomb it long to Hawkins will again be the standard entry into the 50.

9. Too many talls

Will the likes of Lonergan, Mackie and Blicavs miss games for structure? I just dont see it happening.

There isnt the quality depth underneath to push those guys out. Structurally we should but we probably wont.

10. We have the most number of 0 gamers in the comp.

16 players on our list have not played a single game. That puts our list of players with experience at 29.

Out of those 16 players Parfitt is the highest draft pick at 26. It’s list clogger central.

I’m predicting around 9 wins for the year and finishing between 10th and 14th. (I originally thought a prelim loss but after much analysis I cant see us getting anywhere near that)
Scott is saving himself from finals embarrassment with the ridiculous team selections.

The team has too many youngsters to go anywhere during finals and with no ruck and mids who cant defend we are no chance at a flag.

Probably finish 10th.
2019:
was shut at the end of 2013

end of 2016 it was welded shut

end of 2018 nothing is getting in, need to get the bulldozer
2019 again:
Slightly backwards or a fair bit backwards.

Old guys will get worse, kids are too young to make significant improvement.
I have us finishing 12th, 1 spot above port and just below Freo and Sydney. Pretty close between those 4 teams. Sydney are similar to us in that they are too old and too young with no depth.

I think we'll be put in a spot where we will be forced to play a few extra raw kids that will make us less competitive and make us a 10th-13th team instead of a 8th-10th team.

Teams like North, Essendon and the Crows will all go past us. Crows have a much easier draw. North and the Bombers have much better age profiles and improved significantly in the trade period.

Constantly predicting the team to regress and miss the finals. Constantly underrating the list. Constantly wrong.

I'll give it to him that he has been a persistent misery guts for a very long time, and is steadfastly holding onto it for sometime in the future when we do slip down. Laughable to be holding onto it year after year after year though.

I'll bet he can't wait for the day when he can say I told you so, about 10 years ago. Like it counts after such a ridiculously long period.

so you have me saying 7th in 2015
2016 saying its flag or bust, how is predicting a flag doom and gloom (i was saying it was our last chance)
2017 I said 13th, i'll give you that one
2018 said we'd finish 10th, we finished 8th
2019 said we'd finish 12th (straight sets finals exit isnt much better)

so thats 2 wrong predictions on the downside, it's hardly doom and gloom since 2011, more fake news, even your sidekick joined in

i am bearish on our list and expect us to drop down heavily once Danger and Hawkins retires, however due to the evenness of the competition, our huge home ground advantage and Chris Scott's win every game mentality it could be a while before we hit bottom 4 (probably when danger is cooked)

the trend is down though, the top ups just give a temporary hit

our draftees played really well this year as did Rohan for half a year and Ablett, our early season form was surprising but in the end we fell in a heap

Lol. It’s wrong every year. Just admit it and win back a speck of respect.

The supporter base is going to turn on the club if there's much more of this. I'm hoping Scott will step down before it gets to that point. This has been happening now for a decade. The writing is on the wall. He needs to do what's best for the club. Switch off the ego. Walk away before everything completely burns to the ground.

game set match.

GO Catters

What s**ts me is for some reason the Geelong hierarchy think he is a brilliant coach. Honestly I think his numbers are simply overinflated due to the GMHBA ground advantage that we have. If we had to play at the G like the other teams there is no way he would have the winning percentage he does. The GMHBA stadium dimensions ultimately though bite us in the arse when we make the finals as we can't handle the opposition sides spread with our poor zone.
There is a couple of points I would make.
1. THe home ground advantage we supposedly have is because we do not have to play against the better sides in Geelong year in year out so our winning % at GMHBA is inflated and misleading.
2. WE had no problem winning at G between 2007 and 2011. We in fact won 31 from 39 contests = 80%
3. It's a furphy that the GMHBA stadium bites the Cat's on the arse because of it's dimensions. When we were good enough it was not a problem.

Incredibly painful to say but it’s looking like Chris Scott has brought the handbags back...
Such a mentally weak team.

It’s almost embarrassing when you go from players like Scarlett, Chappy, Mooney, Bartel, rooke, to players like blitz, kolo, Guthrie, Rohan, Tuohy.

Bloody hell what do we expect with that recruiting. None of them have a hard edge.

Pros

Win/loss record
Qualification for finals
Recruitment and introduction of young players
Media PR

Cons

Finals record
Results after bye round
Boring style of play (in 2019 season)

It's premature to assess Scott's performance this season. Let's see how we go against West Coast then reconsider.
