Chris Scott's legacy if he gags in another finals series?

4th loses to 1st in an interstate QF and the world is falling. Cats will beat Eagles/Pies and then you never know vs Richmond/Brisbane.
it wouldnt be a story if it didnt have geelongs recent finals history as a backdrop or scotts bizarre and questionable tactical decisions

Geelong have had a good run playing finals without having to travel too much.

In the Chris Scott era, only one of 19 finals so far - the 2017 Prelim in Adelaide - was played outside Victoria.

In contrast, in 2015 Hawthorn had to play two finals in three weeks in Perth, while the Bulldogs played two finals interstate (Perth and Sydney) in their 2016 run.

Correction - only one of the 18 finals interstate before last night!

Oh yes it is!
Losing to the team in first on their home deck and having more scores then them and being within a kick with 10 minutes to play is worse than 3 finals that were over at quarter time, one where we were 5th playing 8th, and a couple where we were the higher ranked top four side.

Let’s discuss Scott’s legacy when he is done. This year doesn’t look good for him and he may well gag another finals series. But he’ll be at Geelong in 2021 and he gets another chance then, and possibly for a few more years after that.

Want to make it worse - it's 1 of 14 since his first season
Why would you cut out his first season?
Just to manipulate the stats?

I can make it even worse too - he's lost every final, if you remove his 2011 to 2019 seasons.

Want to make it better - it's 3 of 3 if removing all seasons after his first.

Or how about, it's 100% wins if you remove everything before and after last year's semi final.

It's pretty obvious that his first season was with the bulk of the side that played in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Grand Finals. Christensen was playing in his first season, Duncan and Podsiadly (30) their second. The 2011 GF side had an average age of 27 and total games played 3207. 17 out of 22 had already won at least one flag.

Alan Joyce is a two time premiership coach. I don't remember much about him other than he coached the Dogs for a bit in the 90s, but really he stood in for Allan Jeans for a year in the 80s then coached that Hawthorn team for a couple of years at the end of their run. I'm sure Joyce was a reasonable coach, but people don't talk about him the way they do about Denis Pagan who is also a two time premiership coach. That 80s (+91) Hawthorn team is considered as the Allan Jeans era. Same as Geelong 2007-2011 is considered the Mark Thompson era even though he left at the end of 2010.

It would be harsh to judge Chris Scott on say 2012-15. Experienced teams transition and lose players, and taking on a team with 9 players 29+ isn't an easy gig. Ottens and Ling didn't play after 2011. Milburn and Mooney were already on the way out. Scarlett played one more year. Etc. But he's been in the job for 10 seasons now. There are only 5 players from the 07-11 GFs left, it's his team and most years they are top 4 or thereabouts. There's enough to go one to notice the H&A vs finals performance trend.

Yeah we all know to be nice and deferential to the coaches when they are under pressure... Legacy is that he was and is a bit of a whiner.. right or wrong..

"An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition"...It was a dreadful performance by a team who failed to show for a final, Geelong has done this for a long time now as Scott's win/loss record continues to get cut in half. We saw two great finals last night and today, Thursday night was an embarrassment.

Get your hand off it mate.

I know I'll get shot down for this but last nights game was 4th vs 1st interstate. Port obviously finished 1st for a reason and were rightly favourites. Despite that you could argue Geelong kicked themselves out of the game rather than Port just smashing them. It was probably the expected result all things considered as much as it goes against the 'Scott is a bad finals coach' narrative.
How do you explain 8th v 5th interstate win.?

The story is not about the other night Phat. It's to do with the preceding years knock-outs and some of Scott's tactics.

Very relevant story line for this week.

The cats will win this week and 50:50 against the lions

Let’s revisit in two weeks
Funny thing is I’d give the Pies at least an even money chance this week, and if they did knock the Cats out even then I wouldn’t blame Scott or say the Cats had underachieved. IMO Collingwood (and WC for that matter) played better than Brisbane, Richmond, and Geelong last night, and with a full team they’re as much a chance of a flag as anyone.

the eagles look spent last night with so many injured or returned to the park not fully match fit An example was McGovern doubled over, out of breath.

but credit to the pies, they were good last and great against port in the last round. The pies best is as good as any side.
