Chris Yarran speaks out about meth addiction

Does this again highlight the AFL's ability to detect drugs in its players?
Hard to imagine how you could get to the stage of full blown addict and not be picked up or at least noticed and therefore lead to some form of assistance

Why the hell can't some people get their head around the fact that addiction IS a mental illness? He wasn't using depression as a cover up for his frivolous drug taking lifestyle. His habit was the mental illness. Footy fans aren't owed any explanation as to the details of what someone's affliction might be, and addiction isn't somehow a less worthy illness than any other that we deem "acceptable."

This!

Also I don't think we as supporters had any need to know about it while he was playing. A guys health and wellbeing is more important than footy.

He said he spent four weeks in rehab at $1k per night and the day he got out he was back on the gear, he said he knew he was done then. I got the impression from how he said it that he was still playing when that happened so the Tigers probably knew by then.

Interestingly worded. "By the 8th year of his career his life fell apart". So doesnt quite admit he was doing it at Carlton as he played 7 seasons there but its hard to believe he wasnt. Carlton may have just lost a few friends at the trade table.
Richmond were in to Yarran for most of his last year at Carlton, it was all over the press. At the end of the year Yarran then asked the club for a trade to Richmond.

What would you have liked Carlton to do in this instance? If Carlton doctors knew that he was a addict and told Richmond without Yarran's permission I take it they could find themselves in a whole heap of trouble.

Hard to detect anything when you are looking the other way.

I presume thats a religious video that is/will be used to recruit 'believers'.

Hope yaz is better and never touches the stuff again. Was a gun and explains what happened when he got traded and then did nothing at richmond.

Unfortunately, i wont be suprised to see this video in a couple of years and see that he has gone off the rails again like cousins

If you think that, then you don't understand how good (note I said good) churches operate.

Disclaimer: I'm, I guess, a non-practicing believer - rarely go to church and don't really live my life according to the rules and regs of the bible. Certainly believe in God though.

There's no deep conspiracy when things like this pop up. The mandate for Christians is to set an example, not hide your faith, and hopefully use that example to help impact people's lives for the better. It's not a corporate recruiting video. It's called testimony and usually it comes about because someone has had such a turnaround that they want to tell people how and why it happened and make people understand that they can turn around too.

I hate the idea of 'recruiting' people to a faith. It's like cheating in a way. But don't shoot someone down because he's had a win in his life and wants to share it.

Hey Phatty,

I find you a bit rough around the edges sometimes.:$ But I really appreciate your straight shooting, and think you often hit the nail on the head.

Go Cats! :thumbsu:

Haha I would not profess to be the most cultured individual when it comes to discussion but thank you, you are probably in the minority in that appreciation!

It is blatant religious propaganda. Good to hear Yarran is sorting his life out, but this video is more about the organisation then him or his story.

So if he got off it via meditation and released the same video, is it blatant meditation propaganda?
If he got off it by taking up running, or chess, or online journalism, is it propaganda for those things too?

Pull your head in.

Not everything in the world has some dark ulterior motive.

It's a bloke who was headed for the boneyard, found a way out of it, and is happy to talk about how he did it.

Great he's on the mend, but found the video creepy. That's all I have to say on the subject.

Look each to their own but personally I think it's sad that people can't just take these things for what they are rather than trying to read into them to find a 'motive' for want of a better word.

No one seems to be able to just do or say anything in modern society without there being some conspiratal purpose behind it.

Agree to disagree I guess.

what a waste. A plonker for blowing his opportunity. As for the video, an odd PR exercise it seems.
A great life lesson sentiment but never to be taken 100% when he's clearly reading it from a card.

"it'll either be a great night, or it will ruin me"? WTF Chris?
It's like deciding to drive a car into a wall at 100 k's an hour and hoping for the best.

Hard to accuse it of being a PR stunt when it received such little promotion that it took 4 months for anyone to see it.

He's a footballer. How is he going to make a coherent statement to a camera without knowing what he'll be saying.

You don't think documentary makers have a script or at very least prepare in detail what they're going to say?

It seemed like a government commerical to me. It was far from a candid sit down with Andrew Denton that's for sure.

He. Is. A. Recovering. Meth head. Footballer.

It's a wonder he can read at all.
I did a recorded video job interview last week, knew everything I wanted to say, tried bullet point prompts, things like that.

In the end I literally had to write out exactly what I was going to say in order to get rid of the umming and ahhing and to sound coherent.

This video was uploaded in May. Just sat there on YouTube and no one noticed. AFL media doing their job great once again.
Was posted on the Richmond board the day before the media "found" it.
If ever you needed proof they get news off BF this is it.

The hiring process for pr0n has improved since my day.

If religion has helped him how can anyone knock it?

I know a hell of a lot about this drug, i've tried it, i know how easy some people can become addicted, my brother was addicted real bad (something i've shared before), but one thing i kept hearing was from those in the know was beating the addiction from those who smoked it was one thing, but those who injected it was something else entirely.

Wish the young fellow all the best and admire him going public with his situation. A family member introduced him to it. I hope he can distance himself from those influences in the longer run.
