Speculation Christian Petracca [UFA 2029]

Cap space is for your best players, which is what Trac is…don’t get people’s obsession with clearing up cap space when it comes to your best players. Thats what cap is for.
But it very much seems like he really really doesnt want to be there, that is not going to result in a good team environment or player performance...

Why? Clubs will still be lining up to trade for him.
If Melbourne cant make a deal happen on their own, thats when the AFL may get involved to broker a deal.
Clubs are hardly going to increase their offer after the AFL makes it a guarantee he moves club are they?

That’s his managements problem to sort. They chose to sign a 7 year deal.
That's spiting yourself for the sake of it. I hope for Melbourne posters (who are my favourite on this site) he's traded, nothing good it going to come from keeping him.

If you go to a house action, and it hits the reserve, do people stop bidding?

If you cant afford to keep your house, you try to sell it for what you think its worth. You cant sell it, it drags on, eventually the bank calls up and tells you times up, we will sell it for you. The bank doesnt care what you get for the house, as long as it gets done.
It just goes to the highest bidder with no haggling.

Youd get a better deal dealing on your own

We can afford to keep him otherwise yes it goes to the highest bidder.

I’m not concerned by the amount of bidders for Trac. Would be 17 teams lining up to get a bid in. As evident by the Collingwood blokes on this thread stretching everything they can to suggest reasonable offers.

I think thats just standard Collingwood supporters being nuffies

Yes but also a dees problem as its an expensive problem to have if he's not committed to the club.

He will come round. See Tom Papley

Haven’t seen any player not get traded and sook it up for 12 months now and doubt Trac will be the first when he cares about his brand so much.

Cripps and Weitering took less than market value.

As a supporter of a Club with a history of players taking less to have a shot at a flag, I'd hope our blokes would do the same as yours.
So Cripps and Weitering took a million each because they could have gotten 1.3 if they left. I love when supporters run with this narrative.

From Barrett's article:

"Of the remaining five years of Petracca's contract with Melbourne, his annual wage will peak at $1.7 million a year, and not fall below $1.2 million a year. He has deserved that deal, for his career has taken in four All-Australians, two best-and-fairests, a Norm Smith medal and a premiership."

Holy Jesus....
Don't believe that for a second. If that's the case it's similar to what Carlton were trying to do with Chris Yarran. No one should take that contract.

Did Grundy come around?

If a player really wants out he gets traded, as clubs don't want them on the books, I think Mccarthy was only player to sit a year out to join Freo while back.

Look it is but in the past its been a reason why players dont choose us. For eg grundy didnt want to move out of a big city, goldstein considered it but the situation with his kids nixed it. I dont see petracca picking geelong due to location.

Sure, I get that. It's also a reason why some have chosen to play for the Cats. And I think given the development in Geelong it's only going to continue to become a more attractive region.

I don't see Petracca joining the Cats but I don't think the travel factor would be the major road block, no pun intended.

Feel like we will never get the full story with what's gone wrong for the Dees. For them break their drought and have all these marquee players signed up for a dynasty and then have it all come crashing down suggests there is some deep cultural stuff going on.

Petracca would be one of the most marketable players in the league, but given his injury and how his age will start to work againt him, his value will never have been lower (even though it's still quite high). The more people come out and comment about this like Gary Lyon the worse it seems to get and I'm not surprised Petracca is ready to move on. True colours are getting shown from all sides and it's problem best at this point if the Dees make a deal and put this behind him. If he stays, you aren't going to get the best of him. These long deals are just nuts, it's so much risk for the clubs but it's the way the league has gone.

He'll get over it after a month. He's management is in overdrive, giving out stories to Barrett and co saying the relationship can't be repaired.

Melbourne won't let him go unless a club offers the keys to a flag. If I'm Melbourne I'm not entertaining anything other a quality player and multiple 1st rounders

Petracca made his bed, and now he should lie in it. If he'd just signed a short contract, he'd be a free agent by now and could go wherever he wanted.
Yep, or be prepared to let Melbourne deal him to the club that offers the most. No exceptions.

He wouldn’t do that though, wouldn’t be fair for him and his family would be the narrative.

You never know how the trade request started. The first you generally hear of it is player X is requesting a trade. That is what has happened. GC could have approached him or his manager could have been looking into a trade for him. Either way he has a contract.

Just speculation on your behalf. Who knows what the story is.

Personally I think Petracca at 29 early next year coming of a major injury is worth about pick 6 and thats about it because I think he is probably only got another 60-100 games in him that have a good chance of being well below his best. But I can see the Melbourne point of view with him being an incontract multi-AA star and their best player so give us 3 1sts.
What Melbourne will demand is the reason why I would stay well away. Imo McKay being a KPF = Petracca coming off his injury.
Unless Melbourne are willing to come to the table with lower expectations no club will trade for him. But maybe that's what they want.

There are plenty of players I would prefer over Petracca. Because they are talented, younger and less of an injury concern.
LDU, McKay, McClugage, J Daicos, Day, Butters to just name a few.
I think that's a good summation of the situation. He's worth more to Melbourne than anyone will offer AND he's under contract. I think Melbourne have more to lose if he went for just pick 6, and would take the opportunity to mend the situation.
