I'm looping through stages of content and fury at this decision. On one hand Mitchell is doing everything he needs to develop has clearly impressed but he has not shown the kind of results Clarkson showed in his development. He's had an easy ride compared to say beverage who took st Bede's to 3 consecutive flags while moving up divisions. Before doing the apprenticeship in the afl.

I still feel the most successful way to pick a senior coach is how we got Clarkson. And others have followed suit.

It's one thing to say yearc 4 years assistant, 2 at state league senior coach etc..

But Clarkson had a teaching background, he was at 2 clubs as a player, was a runner for Melbourne then coached at Stkilda. He coached in the vfl and sanfl winning a flag in his first year and runner up in the 2nd year. He then was instrumental in helping port over the final hurdle to a premiership. He not only did the apprenticeship he excelled at it and was clearly the best SANFL Coach before going to Port.

4 flags in 17 years whilst clubs haven’t even won 1. Some for decades and you’re complaining about the last three years. Come jump back on the wagon when the teams up there again sounds like what you’re good at.

Cherry picking! It might be an idea for you to look at the records of the other clubs in the competition over the last ten years to determine success for not. Clubs have downturns with their playing personnel so only a longitudinal examination of the data gives a guide - and five years is not enough

I hate how some people like to pigeon hole others (and by implication elevate themselves in the process) but for what it is worth I would have described my supporter type as being a process and principle driven supporter. We let go too many quality players for literally nothing & brought in ageing list cloggers from other clubs. (Our list currently is in terrible shape.) We need him to stay next year to help Sam Mitchell as he becomes the face of the club. Jeff, hold him accountable to his contract. Clarkson is going to have lots of opportunities in 2023. Buckley would be a great backup in the event he leaves.

Geez I hope Jeff gets this right as seems like Clarko wanted to see it through to another flag and only just starting to see the future with Denver, Day, Downie, Bramble, Jiath, Newcombe etc so who knows why now? Scared of losing Mitchell to another club? He is not proven at senior level full stop but hope he will be great but that's hope..

No one lasts forever I guess but someone who has had assistants that have gone on to coach at senior level says it all. Sam might have a bright future with success at Box Hill but the seniors is another bag.

I am a firm believer in investing in youth in the draft so who knows but seems like Clarko was tapped on the shoulder. God help us if we leave it to Kennett to decide the future of the club as obviously very good at taking it up the AFL and making a stand but not on footy decisions as tried to get rid of Clarko before he went on to win us another couple of flags.

So we have to wait and see and only time will tell; hopefully for the best for Hawthorn...

What should be of comfort to all of us is that Clarkson seems to have endorsed Mitchell as the best option available—Collingwood also seem to have believed he was. It’s clear he has played a role in creating this outcome.
I’m sure there are levels of not seeing eye to eye, but not sure why people are so keen to jump to sinister motives. Jeff and Clarkson have worked together for a dozen years now. They know each other well and have banged it out on numerous occasions.

It's 5 years an we've barely scratched the surface of this rebuild though that's the thing, we're still minimum 3 years away from playing finals. Would you feel better about Clarkson departing if he stayed for 2023 and 2024 also and then it was a a 9 year sample size without a finals win ?

I think work to the midfield will organically help the forwardline so our improvement should be quicker than simply needing to add X number of players (mid + fwd).

Also, there's not a huge number of good teams that we have to overcome to make the 8 - those outside the top 6 are kinda there by default because there's nobody better, not because they're good.

Only on the say so of John Turnbull that has never been substantiated by one other person. The last time this was quoted in the Age (within the last 12 months) I challenged the journo via email to ask JT to add a name to substantiate the timeline, or have the courage to name the person. I added it otherwise sullied the names of Kennedy, Parkin, Jeans etal who as coaches who oversaw recruiting particularly when the club management was smaller compared to today. Nothing in response because it never was a policy and the mere suggestion it was demeans many many good people.

Guess it was just coincidence that there was only one year between 1966 and 2000 where Hawthorn had an indigenous player on the list. Being that Turnbull implicated a club official who was there in 1995 when he joined the club, Kennedy, Jeans and Parkin were all absolved.

The club even admits there was a ‘resistance’ to recruit Indigenous players in that era in the club’s reconciliation action plan. It says the following:

“While the Hawthorn Football Club is proud of its rich history with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it also acknowledges that its path towards reconciliation has not been a smooth one. Throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s the club’s resistance to recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players meant that when drafted in 2000, Chance Bateman was the only Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander player on the Hawks’ list.”
