Club disillusionment and the switch

My Dad was a Fitzroy fan all his life until he jumped across to Carlton in the early 90s. At the time my uncle was the club doctor at Carlton and my cousins and I used to often get taken (dragged in my case) in to the rooms to meet players after Blues games. I have a self-inflating sense of pride that I stuck with the Hawks when the rest of my family (bar 1 bulldog) either switched to the Blues or were already Blues.

I've never felt the need to get stuck in my Dad as a traitor but I think a fair few of his mates did.

Your Dad dropped Fitzroy when they needed him the most? Your Dad dropped Fitzroy when thousands of Fitzroy fans would give everything just to see Fitzroy play one more game in the AFL?

I'm impressed/horrified you have the guts to still acknowledge him as family...

He said our culture was loathsome which is complete bullshit.

Tell us what horrible things our players did in 2010 that made our culture so loathsome? Lovett was the only player that was charged with a serious crime and he was sacked straight away, he was barely even a St Kilda player anyway having only just arrived there. There was also an incident in NZ with a few players out drinking and breaking a curfew during the 2011 pre-season and they were suspended for 6 weeks.

The disciplinary actions St Kilda took with those incidents would be examples of a good culture not a loathsome culture like your turncoat mate said.

All the Kim Duthie stuff was a massive media beat up, our players did nothing wrong and committed no crimes, one or two of them were just stupid enough to get involved with a lying, attention seeking, psychopathic stalker. Players from other clubs would have done similar stuff on end of season trips but they were just lucky it didn't get into the media.

Exactly, every club has off field incidents and scandals from time to time, you would be changing clubs just about every year if you jumped off clubs for that kind of stuff.

I think I made it pretty clear that I had spent 20 years away from AFL it wasn't like I had being madly following the Saints all that time. By culture I didn't mean the players, I meant the people looking after the players interest. Boys do stupid stuff like getting it on with schoolgirls; when that happens do you think that you should be ok with vilifying a pretty clearly mentally ill 17 year old in the press and getting coke addled Ricky Nixon to look after her...if the stephen milne case hadn't being interfered with by 'interested parties' he might not have to live with all the rapist taunts no one can really say for sure he's innocent(or guilty for that matter). I really don't have a problem with the players, they were stupid and hopefully they learnt from it.
I had the opportunity to change teams as an adult, I doubt I would of done the same if I had being following St Kilda from 1992/2010 but who knows as a Woman who has worked in Rape Crisis and hates the effect of pokies in the community where I grew up I might still have done the same thing.
I'd still like North though, I live near Arden Street, love their style of play and applaud their community work. There probably will be a scandal in the future and I'll stick with them because there are more connections that I have with this team than I had to St Kilda.

Not only that but he left them for Carlton....

I love my dad, he's a good man but when it comes to football he's a ****ing idiot.

You clearly don't have much knowledge of what you're talking about and are just going by the sensationalist rubbish spread by the media.

The St Kilda players had no knowledge Kim Duthie was a schoolgirl when they met her in a nightclub in Sydney posing as a 19 year old with fake ID. I have zero sympathy for her as she lied, stole and tried to ruin innocent people's reputations just to get her 15 mins of fame. I couldn't give a shit if she's 17 yrs old, she's old enough to know right from wrong, if she has been vilified for it then stiff shit, she made her bed and she can lie in it.

I'm not sure what Ricky Nixon has to do with St Kilda, he was a player manager that looked after a few St Kilda players as well as players from other clubs, he wasn't employed by St Kilda.

The Milne case was re-investigated by the police and they found that the case wasn't interfered with and so was closed. There wasn't even enough evidence to charge him let alone convict him which would suggest there is more chance of him being innocent than guilty.

Anyway you're welcome to support North Melbourne if you wish but don't go using the excuse that you changed teams because of St Kilda's loathsome culture when you're so obviously clueless about the facts.

all this yet you followed a team whose best player shagged his captains wife.

I befriended a guy at school in grade five whose awesome mum was a passionate Essendon fan and so, although he himself was a Saints fan, he supported Essendon as his second team. A couple of times a season, then, I would go along to Essendon games and cheer the boys on with my mate, his mum and his uncle (who was also awesome - Bombers fans seem to make great uncles).
