Happy with the response so far. John Barker appears to be well-liked, but ineffective at his job.

Liddle, Lloyd and Judd have had the run of the show for a while and frankly for poor results. Judd's gone at end of year, Cain should be restricted back to admin and Lloyd, well, we'll see.

I had a call from the club this morning and didn't answer it. No voicemail left.

I just couldn't fathom them trying to sell me a raffle ticket or encouraging me to nominate someone for my free membership, at this time.

Did anyone else get a call? What was it?

Asking you to apply for coaching role? As a moderator of this forum looking after a few thousand babies perhaps felt that would translate well to looking after 44.

Issue is player culture. The lack of drive, hunger, motivation to do anything more than collect a pay cheque. Coaching changes all century haven't changed that. Every coach looks like he has a shit game plan if the players won't work hard like they should. As bad as it it is has been better under Teague than the previous two coaches combined but that is not saying alot. We are at least very competitive, scoreboard-wise at least, something you could say for the 5 years previous before Teague but the player work rate is way off where it should be. We need to look at players who don't have that drive and motivation, who are just want to play for the pay cheque, and weed them out.

So, Murphy unhappy about being put under pressure and eventually dropped and now leading yet another player strike ?
Is that what has mostly led to this review ?

I hope they are onto this kind of crap. Been going on far too long

Well **** me. What a start to the day. Incoming president announces an external review one day, next day Barker hands in his resignation. Almost as if he had an idea about what the review would find and report on.

See you in the JohnBarker thread!

SOS's job was to build a list by draft in the first instance and by trade in the second phase - that's what list management and list strategy is....

To blame him for the fact that Teague and his crew have no idea about how to coach a defensive game plan 2 years after he was sacked for having 'conflicts of interest' ( something which the Club now regrets as having been nonsense btw) - is bonkers mate. In fact worse than bonkers- because it takes away the spotlight of what the problem is at Calton and that is a bunch of nuff nuffs wasting the talent at their disposal through non AFL standard defensive structures and coaching in other words forcing players to play an uncompetitive game plan and blaming players for their own deep inadequacies.

Judd was right about 'training wheels' - and I was a vociferous critic of his statement at the time - but he was 100% correct.
Read my post again. He is "in part" to blame

He needs to cop some blame for drafting the likes of Dow, Obrien and SPS with premium picks.

He needs to cop.some blame for turning a warrior tuohy into an already injury prone marchbank.

He needs to cop some blame for tunnel vision recruiting of setterfield, Pickett, and Plowman

I could name 17 other clubs that have done similar. If you like, try and name one recruiter that has a better strike rate of 2 of 3 selections over their tenure

You calmed down a bit now big fella?

Dow/LoB/SPS/Setterfield are open questions - I would say that SPS is AFL quality.
Didnt agree with Tuohy being let go and called it myself loudly and often - but Marchbank has been unlucky with injury and is definitely AFL quality - same as Charlie has been injured.
Pickett got injured before which he was tacking as the most exciting speedster on our list that was a sad day.
Plowman is AFL quality and a very good player for us. I rate Cuningham as AFL.

We got McGovern who has been underwhelming due to injury issues, Martin for nothing.
He missed Shiel and Papley - the management of which I thought was ordinary and may have cost us Wines.

All up based on facts and given where we were when he started - I grade him as an A-.

Now lets have a look at what the regime that has replaced him has achieved

Shortages in talls front and back
Saad ( pick8) Williams on mega dollars

and no signing yet of Crips or Harry -want me to go on?

How do you know they were bad picks rather than poorly developed?
All have shown in the past why they were drafted so high but have gone backwards from then. I think it’s more a development issue

No, but I did receive a call last week. He told me that it’s in regards to the survey I did the previous week - I am thinking “oh shit, I won the signed guernsey” - but no, he wanted to ask me if I had any issues or questions about my membership. But no, no phone calls today.

Barker supposed to be stoppages coach only, but I've seen him addressing the players presumably in leu of Stanton so who knows what to think with our coaching group.
But in relation to discussion we were having, does his position need to be filled or can it be left vacant. Stanton is the midfield coach so will we actually bother filling the stoppage coach position right away?

C.Judd copping criticism for his director of footy role. Non-visible.
Must admit I've noticed this. I'm reticent to criticise Juddy as for Carlton in modern times he's Jesus in navy, but I'm not convinced he's really done anything in the position. There's no visibility whatsoever in his role and the only communication he's made publicly about footy-related queries was ignored by the club re no coach with training wheels.

I do somewhat recall it was only a part time gig, though, and he was a junior board member or something like that? So perhaps they didn't really want much input from him, more advisory than anything.

Mixed messaging is all all that can be achieved by filling it.

Midfielders attend stoppages, even in the forward line or back line. Sure, forwards and backs have to know their role at stoppages too, but I'm happy with a midfield coach to lead the way with an assistant helping them.

This isn’t major, but just a tidbit I’ve heard from a mate, who’s close with one of the players.

Apparently a fair chunk of the playing group aren’t exactly enamoured with Barker. Apparently not great at building relationships and won’t interact with players outside of drills etc.

Take this for what it’s worth, as it’s obviously hearsay, but I nonetheless trust the info I’ve been given.

You calmed down a bit now big fella?
i was always calm when talking about Barker. While I might have thought he was a shit coach, he seemed like a nice guy who had time for people and would possibly have done well being moved into a player morale officer role where he could help players with any issues they might have.

As i said before... see ya in the Barker thread.

Nick Austin

In his 1 draft to date? We simply don't know who he was responsible for as an underling at other clubs.

We have Durdin, Carroll, Parks, Mirkov, Boyd. A long way to go to declare anyone a success there.

Probably one thing I hope comes out of the review.

"Reward for effort"

It is pretty disgusting when I watch unfit and underperform players get selected ahead of guys doing well in the VFL.

Like it doesn't a genius to figure out "Hey Martin/Fisher/Willaims are injured, they probably need a rest and get 2-3 block of games of VFL before selection"

You feel very jaded if this happens in any team sports.
