Club with most midfield depth

Ablett, Corey, Bartel, Ling, Selwood.

That's probably the best first 5 for starters. Then we can add the next tier. These blokes run in the middle if not every game then most games.

S.Johnson, Chapman, Enright, Kelly, Rooke, Stokes, Varcoe.

Then the ones that run in there occassionally:

Wojcinski, Milburn, Mackie.

The 3 I've highlighted while IMO aren't flash are still part of the rotations and do a bit of work in there.

I'd imagine the first 5 along with the next 4 I've listed would be about the best and the most consistent first 9 going around.

Do Geelong have ten Quality Midfielders?

Cause if Geelong can count Stokes and Varcoe

port should count Logan, Hartlett, Surjan, Thomas, Grey and Krakouer

That's the thing.

I was being conservative when I was counting the obvious ten:

Kornes
Cornes
Shaun B.
Peter B.
Cassisi
Carr
Salopek
Rodan
Boak
Pearce

Was leaving out Logan, Hartlett, Lower, Krak, Surjan, Thomas, Farmer, Banner and Gray (basically the kids and bitpart rotation players) completely - unlike a few others on this thread who seem to be counting anyone with two legs who might've once ran through the centre square.

I think we should be able to name 10

We have some key quality midfielders
1. Ablett
2. Bartel
3. Corey
4. Ling
5. Selwood

Our others rotate through the middle for limited amounts of time and have had to be pushed into other roles over the last few years but the following would all have had a run on the ball at AFL level with success.

6. Chapman
7. Kelly
8. S.Johnson
9. Rooke
10. Enright

Done.

Others that can play in the middle, bit part and youngsters

Wojcinski
Stokes
T.Varcoe
Mackie
Byrnes
Djerrkura
Hogan
Ranga
Tenace
Moles
Laidler
Allwright
Weadon

And a couple of small forwards who may be able to play forward a lot further down the track

A.Varcoe
S.Motlop

but u cant say players like Djerrkura can play midfield well, he is a spud. I remamber reading a pre-season article on Geelong in 2006 and it said Djerrkura was the one to watch. But im not sure if he has played his first game yet. as for the players you have listed under him, lets just say they are not proven midfeilders and do not add to midfeild depth

Hahahahahahahahahahaha Richmond with the second best midfield you have to be kidding surely you people are taking the piss......

No wonder I think most richmond fans have nothing intelligent to say about footy.

Geelong has the best midfield in the comp.

Cross, Boyd, Cooney, Griffen, Gia, Aker, Ward, Reid and Eagleton anyone?
Then when you add Johnno, Higgins, Hill, Harbrow and Addison who can all play in the midfeild - can't beat it :)

Fair enough comments. Now go and line up your teams' best 10 against the first 10 named from Geelong by Asty. That's why you got belted by 119 points.

Djerrkura and Hogan have both been playing midfield in the VFL and named as emergencies for the AFL team the problem they face is that our midfield has not suffered any major injury to allow them into the side. Remember Prismall was struggling to get a game with the cats and yet was targetted by other afl sides (even after he did a knee). Additionally Djerrkura had a few soft tissue injuries to hold him back and Hogan was undersize so has taken some time to put some meat on the bones.

Kornes - Does a lot of tagging gets a lot of the ball but doesn't really do much to hurt the oposition with it.

Cornes - Great CHB a few years ago and can hurt the opponent but more through his flexibility not so much as a pure midfielder.

Shaun B. - Both burgoynes are classy footballers.
Peter B.

Cassisi - Trier but not great. Defensive midfielder

Carr - was good at PA before but pretty ordinary at Freo over last couple of years (except for derby day)

Salopek - Getting there

Rodan - Discarded by richmond!! one good year and then an average one but hyped by media because was a discard come OK.

Boak - young and will be a gun

Pearce - NAB rising star ..... to average player

You want to name Hartlett, Lower, Krak, Surjan, Thomas, Farmer, Banner and Gray in the PA list but then question Djerrkura, Hogan, Varcoe, Stokes etc etc???

I voted Geelong.

If Coughlan and Cousins come back anywhere near their best, adding them to Deledio, Tuck, Foley and Cotchin gives us a super top 6. The depth then depends on the development of the likes of Edwards, Connors, White, Jackson, Polo and Tambling. The first two can seriously play but one is a stick and the other a nutter. Nonetheless we have high hopes for them. White and Jackson will not die with the music in them, both are tough and quick and Jacko one of the best kicks in yellow and black. Polo has been given the tough love treatment, this year will see if it pays off. Tambling ... I think his best position at the moment is at half-back. If he can grow a bit of confidence back there he still has plenty of time to develop into a damaging midfielder.
Newman can also run through there and I'd expect McMahon to play more of a midfield role this year. Say what you like about him, he's the hardest runner on our list, or was til we got the Cuz.
I'll reserve my judgment on what if anything Thomson, Hislop, Raines and Johnson will contribute.

Irrelevant. We're talking about midfield depth only - and going into 2009. Not Grand Final day 2007 when everyone bar Chad, Kane, Tredders, Peter and Shaun didn't bother turning up.

If you go back and look at the first 10 Port midfielders I listed, Danyle Pearce is at #10. That's the same Danyle Pearce who has previously been the Rising Star and more recently won the Showdown Medal for BOG against the Crows in Round 16 and picked up two Brownlow Votes for his 28 disposal/1 goal performance in the demolition of North Melbourne in Round 22.

He's got his critics and rightly so, but he's still only 22 and has plenty to offer once he pulls his head out of the clouds.

Still, he comes in at number 10.

Last year Geelong probably did have the most midfield depth(probably now as well). Guys like davenport and prismall are pretty handy players and just could nt break into the team last year.

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind the massive improvement expected in Richmond and Carlton's midfields.
Surely players like Judd,Stevens and Cousins aren't going to be better in 2 or 3 years than what they are now?

Perhaps it's the OTHER players?
