Okay, we have finally been told what we have known for a while, that being the Roos are keeping put. Assuming the AFL are serious about Gold Coast expansion, and knowing that we need 75% OK from clubs to get it through, what AFL clubs will be AGAINST the Southport Sharks admittance into the AFL?

I am against Southport, firstly they suck, and will need to cheat to be competitive.

Secondly, the Gold Coast people don't give a stuff about AFL, as proved with the Bears.

Thirdly, they have no supporters in Melbourne, so it will create more financial disasters in the fixture.

I vote no.

Brisbane could see it as threat.
Collingwood might, so Eddie can stroke his ego.
Roos, Dees, and the Doggies could see it as less money for them.
West Coast, Fremantle, Sydney, Adeailde and Port Adeilaide have no reason to oppose it.
It has hard to guess where the other Vic clubs would be on this issue but I don't think Essendon or Hawthorn would try to stop a 17th team.

Do you have any idea about the Gold Coast? and the changes since the Brisbane Bears moved to Brisbane?

Goodness me.

There wouldnt be many, brisbane would say no, North wouldnt as it means they are no longer forced up there.

Collingwood carltona nd essendon would oppose if they are offered too much draft concessions otehrwise they would also stay out.

Bulldogs and melbourne might oppose but i cant see them arguing too much knowing they are next in line.

Port, adelaide, freo, sydney, west coast wouldnt care id imagine. If the AFL go down the second licence road which id say they will it'll go through and probably mean that North would get no subsidy from the AFL so they better hope JB knows what he is doing

I think most clubs would be against the idea of a 17th licence for a few valid reasons:

- The talent pool of players would be reduced amongst all clubs
- The re-introduction of a 'bye' each week, corporate money down the drain?
- Television rights and not being able to see your club on TV each week
- Further interstate travel for some clubs
- The AFL draw perhaps not being fair (as is stands, 22 rounds - 1 bye each week for 17 teams - leaves 5 vacant positions?)

As a supporter myself, I could not see immediate success for another club in Queensland, still a rugby dominated state and the AFL have missed the boat with the Gold Coast market due to the Titans (NRL) and Blaze (NBL) recently starting with new franchises.

Yeah its grown a bit, big deal.

Wheres the demand for an AFL side?, 10,000 crowds to the Kangaroos games? you have to be kidding me.

Carrara a stadium for an AFL side? you have to be kidding me.

So how the hell are the Gold Coast ready?

Massive concessions, to be gift-wrapt premierships so the flimsy "can't decide if i like AFL or Rugby or just wanna surf" Gold Coast population don't lose interest?

Yeah, i bet he doesnt vote for any proposed 17th side though.

All proposal put forward by the AFL will have unacceptable concessions.

We are talking 2010 before they are in the comp right? The fact that there were well over 1000 people nominating for the draft says that the talent pool is deep enough for a 17th team. And I think the teams would welcome a bye or two during the season so they can have a week to recouperate during the season instead of that stupid split round.

Come hell or high water, Vlad will have a GC team before his tenure is over.

Absolute Rubbish

The Talent Pool is stronger than ever
We are having two byes next year anyways
See above for TV issue
Travelling to Gold Coast for the interstaters isn't really that much worse than travelling to Melbourne, and at least the Melbourne Clubs have to travel a bit more.

I wouldn't be surprised if all clubs voted for a 17th licence, and it's in Brisbane's best interest to have the another club for the long term benefit of the code in QLD.

the issue isnt whether clubs are against southport, the issue would be whether clubs are against a 17th team being introduced.

Fox news, just said that Eddie Maguire has said he would fully support a Gold Coast team.

Eddie was on SEN about an hour ago and that's not what he said then.

Like all clubs I'm sure he'd want to see the details first. Any plan to add an expansion team with cap and draft concessions would need a big carrot before the other clubs supported it.

I think it will end up like when Port came in (or was it Freo??). We'll persist with a bye until one of the weak clubs is forced to merge like Fitzroy was.

To my way of thinking, North are hoping that one of the other likely candidates goes bust first. By raising a bit of cash to tide them over for the next 2 years or so they may be able to give the hospital pass to someone else.

For-

Collingwood
Carlton
Essendon
Fremantle
Geelong
Hawks
Melbourne
Port
Richmond
Stkilda
Sydney
WCE
Bulldogs

Against

Adelaide
Brisbane
Roos
---------------------------

Cant explain the Adelaide one (gut feeling)

But i think brissie would see Southport as a major threat to their QLD support, and The roos will not want a new team as they need all the money they can get

Yep, they agreed to Port coming into the competition, with 17 teams. Why not now????
